The 2008 poll ended up being a two-horse race, with the same two songs contending for the win in both categories. While Amy Winehouse thankfully managed to retain her win in Song of the Year for “Rehab,” Rihanna did manage to usurp her in Record of the Year, with “Umbrella” snatching the victory. It’s a fair split, I suppose.

In 2009, the Academy nominated a bunch of songs that could be well-categorized as modern classics. The year marked the ascension of a new class of pop girls. Leona Lewis and Sara Bareilles earned nominations for their breakthrough debut singles, while future Grammy favorite Adele put in an early appearance with nominations in both categories. Signature songs from MIA, Jason Mraz, and Coldplay also earned nominations, with that latter winning Song of the Year for “Viva La Vida.” However, in typical Grammy fashion the award for Record of the Year went home with Robert Plant and Alison Krauss rather than any of the generation-defining smashes in the lineup. Our voters will surely not agree… but who will we favor?

Now that we’re getting into a period where most voters ought to be familiar with most / all nominees, I’d love to see people share their rankings as well as voting for their favorites!

It’s also about the vocal performance, though.

Paper Planes wins ROTY for me, but Bleeding Love, Chasing Pavements, and Viva La Vida also clear.

How was Poker Face not nominated for ROTY??

It was released in the last week of eligibility, plus it didn't really become a big hit until early 2009.

Coldplay deserved to sweep in 2009. The way no one remembers the project that won AOTY :deadbanana2:
