This is actually exactly what I’ve heard a Capitol employee say once. My ex at the time was working in the music industry, and they had some kind of party/conference event for Universal Music Group employees in late 2019, where I was also invited.

But this is exactly what one of the higher ranking managers said about Katy Perry. Capitol believed that Katy would go on for years, just like Madonna, and that she was in fact “their Madonna”, so to speak. He also said that they were shocked when the whole “Witness” fiasco happened, and that “no one knows what to do with her anymore”. Everyone in the room nodded after this statement.

Because the singles and music videos from True Blue are some or the pop material in pop music history and Madonna was already training her audience to expect her to be subversive and mercurial. People liked Katy for being hot with some basic bops and when that ended, so did her success.

In the 80’s people were easily impressed by an image change and called it a “reinvention”. Every pop girl has done the same since then so it’s not new. Madonna started it and that’s what made her into the legend she is

It would've flopped with or without the haircut. The cracks were already starting to show in 2016 with Rise. Her fans attributing her downfall to a hairstyle will never not be a send.

y'all need to stop thinking your Brain voices are reality. She was the biggest sex symbol of the 80s and early 90s. Those old men still talk about how much they thought she was sexy, sultry, beautiful etc on pop forums and gossip sites. Katy barely had this going on for 4-5 years Max.

It advanced her image from a successful teen pop star who'd faze out in popularity within a few years like any other 80s fad; to one of the world's biggest and most appealing celebrities of the late 20th century. Plus, she had the hits, music videos, controversy and quality to back up the success. 

Katy Perry, on the other hand, did a complete 180 from the image she meticulously built for herself through the course of nearly a decade and that everyone came to love. Yet, she expected everyone to roll with it instantaneously. It worked a bit with CTTR but it went south afterwards.
