Have you lost interest in exploring new music?

Less than before. I’ve gotten more picky than I used to be. I do genuinely think new music is not quite up to par. We should demand better of our biggest artists quality wise.

Ngl, yes. I don't really go out my way to find new artists on my own anymore - just stuff that appears on Spotify or a recommendation from my friends. I turn 27 next year too, so I'm not too far off the point. But thinking about it as a whole, I do find new music and new artists.. lacking.

I'm 40 and listen to new music all the time lol

I'm 29, and I'm still listening to new music and artists weekly. It's actually a running joke with me and my friends that I usually know a new artist way before they break into the mainstream.

But a lot of it is because of Spotify (I hate the latest wave they've been on where they tailor playlists to you bc I think it prevents you from listening to songs you usually wouldn't). I also use RYM and AOTY.org a lot to see what others think is good. I also cycle through review sites to see what they think is good too. Sometimes it puts me onto a new artist and my favorite albums of the year are found that way. Sometimes it's just not for me.

Over the pandemic, I did a lot of deep dives into older artists and I think I slacked off on that this year, so I wanna try to get back to doing that next year when I'm not listening to the stuff in my rotation. I will say though, most of those studies seem to indicate it's more about people not having the time to check out new artists or that people tend to look past the mainstream as they get older for new music.

For me, I find it harder to go back to the music I grew up with because I find some of it has aged really poorly. I can still remember how exciting a song was when I heard it - like for instance, a lot of Katy Perry's stuff for me is kind of like...I remember I used to like it, but I actively think it's bad now. On the other hand, I'll go back to something like Born This Way, and I find that nothing still sounds like it since it came out and it makes me appreciate what a singular body of work it actually is. I took the time to really listen to Kate Bush's discography in 2021 (way before Stranger Things revived Running Up That Hill) and I was delighted by her work and she immediately became one of my favorite artists of all time.

Back in high school I started doing annual year-end playlists as a way of keeping a song diary of my life. I try to tailor each one to the mood and events of that year which means I have to constantly consume new music in order to have enough songs to choose from.

Now I've got a nice back catalogue of playlists I can put on and relive all the different versions of me from teenaged years til now. As a bonus I always have incentive to listen to what's new.

I gave in and listened to Tate McRae's greedy in full yesterday and it is a certified bopianka so no, I haven't lost interest in discovering new music

Nope. I'm constantly listening to new music (or at least music that's new to me).

That sounds like such a commitment, but quite cool, actually.

Yes, but sometimes I'm in the mood to discover a new songs/artists

Yes and I wish it wasn't that way... I would not only sit through so many albums as a teen but I had to put in the effort to even download them lol, now I rarely enjoy myself on the rare occasion that I do play one
