Have you lost interest in exploring new music?

Several studies over recent years have shown music consumers lose interest in exploring new artists & music at about the age of 28-30, preferring to stick to artists that are more familiar & core to their developmental ages.

A recent study suggests that people stop embracing new music at 27 years and 11 months. x

We stop discovering new music at age 30, a new survey suggests. x

Our willingness to explore new or unfamiliar music declines with age. Multiple studies confirm. x

Have you succumb to this general standard & disinterest, and if so, at what age do you feel it set in for you?

If not, do you find yourself capable of forming & attaching similar nostalgic memories and experiences to newer artists & music? Do they hold equal “weight” & value to you?

And finally, what quality do you seek out in a newer artist that helps you connect with or appreciate their work? Do you feel it’s become more difficult to find & have that standard met?

Not really. My bf and I create monthly playlists that include only the songs we've discovered that month of the year with a possibility to add something we have forgotten about and underplayed. Spotify's suggested track algorithm is pretty great, ngl.

I definitely have artists and songs that I prefer and am connected to nostalgically.

As for quality, I always seek for great tunes and beats, expensive sounding production if that makes sense. Vocally - something that sets them apart from everyone else who is current.

I've been really bopping to Troye's latest album, he served.

ugh I remember about a decade ago when I was still in confirmation classes at my old synagogue in maryland we had these two teachers who were in their early 40s who just randomly one day brought this up and I was flabbergasted and upset for the rest of the week tbh. I turn 27 in 42 days and I really don’t want this to become a reality for me because music is everythingggg to me as a musician and I want to keep exploring forever :dancehall3:

I’m 22 and I used to already feel like this for a long time, but it’s actually become a bit better.

Last year I was listening to a lot of Latin pop due to Rosalía and it got me into Arca and Isabella Lovestory, which I normally wouldn’t listen to. But it got me really hyped about the Neoperreo sound. And this year because of SZA I got into R&B more, with Victoria and Tinashe’s projects being highlights.

I’m a typical ‘became obsessed with Gaga’s electropop in 09 and the rest is history’ gay but I find myself embracing new music again after a long period of me going ‘no I only want pop girls’

I just need the music to be good. Not just background noise, something that STICKS. But that’s subjective and personal to everybody. Unless you’re Ava Max cause then I’ll eat up pretty much anything

nope   I still do it daily .. I get bored of my faves sometimes so I like to search for new artists to listen to

like im so glad I discovered Lolo Zouai last week .. have had her on repeat for most the week now.  I'm sure ill find another artist next week.

Omgg I thought I was the only one. It's  almost a chore for me to go out of my way to discover new music nowadays. And on the rare occasions that I do, I find it very difficult to find something that grabs my attention.

Nope, not at all

Wait, this is actually real. I don't care about discovering new artists, listening to new albums is a chore unless i already love the artist. And even then I might not listen to it for months :rip:

I think i added only 20 new songs max this year to my spotify and those i randomly came across on tiktok :psyduck:

Hmm, I'm 29 now and it depends. When a new name catches my eye on ATRL, I try to listen to a song or two.

And when there haven't been any interesting releases for a while, I sometimes actively seek out new stuff.

Or I listen to older albums that I haven't got around to listen to, from artists that I already like.

This year I discovered Nicole Dollanganger, Raye and Chappell Roan.

Right now, I'm revisiting albums for my end-of-year list with my full attention, and truly LOVING music again.

Yes. I usually just listen to new albums of artists I already love

No, I try to stay open.

Yeah, sadly. That's what happens when you get old, and I'm already past 25, so....

Yes. That’s what happens when you discover Taylor’s discography. I mean that’s the best you can have.

I still try to listen to other indie and alternative music and some music I see on atrl. But they always pale in comparison. :jonnycat:

kinda. year after year i pick up less and less new artists. this year i'm pretty sure none of them caught my attention enough to listen to one of more songs :rip:

doesn't help that i've been going through my 80's era at the moment

Yep, as I got older I just do not have enough time to sit and explore new music on the internet like I had when I was younger.

I'm still interested, especially in old works

I love music and always will, but it’s been a long time since I’ve made playlists based on my weekly/monthly/yearly last.fm charts and searched out new releases. I hear stuff when Spotify recommends it sometimes or randomly.

Absolutely not! I discovered a band in 2020 and a band in 2022 who became two of my favourite bands of all time! It doesn’t happen all the time, but I’m still finding new bands / artists that I fall in love with.

I discovered a lot of New Artist over the past 5 years but These artists are in the music industry for 15+ years. Brand New artists I barely listen to. Most of them are hyped to death.

About to turn 28 and no, and I'm still open to new artists. Every year I have a new obscure artist topping my most played chart, and this year is no exception.

In a way. When it comes to new artists, this is definitely the case. The mainstream music scene has been on life support for decades, and the anemic state of the music industry shows tells me that won't change any time soon. I just don't have any ability to connect with The Weeknd, Lana Del Rey, or Olivia Rodrigo.

There's a sub-indie-mainstream that tends to suit me just fine, but my attentions have been on jazz and classical lately. Pop music is kind of like the smartphone or the blender--we've peaked, and nothing left to do with the genre. Nobody is going to reinvent the wheel because there are no more wheels to invent.

As for new music from artists who debuted years ago, I'm a lot more open.

I'm okay with becoming an curmudgeon.

100% agree with this, I'm always diecovering something new :clap3: I also love their personalised genre mixes, a great place for finding new songs

I'm 29 and I would say it's mixed. I'm not looking for new genres. I know what I like. I do look for new music within my favorite genres. The new pop artists like Olivia, Billie don't click with me. I think I'm too old for their music.

I'm over 30 and I'm on my top of "explore new music" ! I'm really happy musically !
I discover like 20 songs/artists per month. I listen to songs in 5 different languages - and lot of genres - before just English & French.

The streaming era gave me a second musical life. Always happy to listen to new music.
