bestfiction Posted February 3 Posted February 3 (edited) Finally caught up! A bit bummed out that my 11 finished just outside the top 10, One Last Kiss is truly a magical song I get chills during the outro which is kinda the best showcase of A.G's ability to create electronic music that feels human and Hikki's "I love you more than you'll ever know" feels like a revelation. Really simple but powerful Overall, pretty content with the results, lol @ the top 10 being quite diverse but the top 5 only being Deep River and Bad Mode tho! Sakura Drops... what they did had artistry to it, I'll say that! Thanks @Subomie for hosting this, this finally gave me the incentive to finish Utada's discography and rediscover their music. Amazing writeups, and it was nice to get more background and context about the songs. Excellent job! Edited February 3 by bestfiction 3
Suilen Posted February 3 Posted February 3 Apparently the old forum had a Utada discography rate too, which completely escaped my mind, so it's interesting to compare the results: https://classic.atrl.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1079246 2

Ace Reject didn't remember that old rate or I would not have been green lighted to host this at all Dang, names I have not seen in years in there. Also rates used to be so much more active and popular on this forum idk why they dried up.

Honestly, I think it's fine considering that we've had 2 more albums since then, and I wouldn't have even discovered it if I hadn't decided to take a trip down the memory lane. Heart Station not making it that far seems to be a consistent theme. And Distance was done more justice this time I think. I can't speak for rates, but the unfortunate truth is that the j-pop discussion kinda died following the forum's upgrade, I remember being very optimistic due to the promise that registrations would be open more frequently, but then we kept having those technical issues, j-pop stopped being that exciting, and the old guard moved on. So these days I'm down for any opportunity to talk about j-pop anything, and I'm glad that this rate provided exactly that. And I'm glad that there WAS a next time because that COLORS hate was even worse than I remember, Jesus @AMIT https://classic.atrl.net/?p=37667190 1

I hope more rates get approved, like a Bjork or Ayumi rate. It’s a great way to learn what people see in the songs they love and gain appreciation for them. 1

I think we should be able to redo some old rates as well considering how buried a lot of them are. Like, there was an Ayu singles rate a few years back but it's not like anybody can go back and look at it since ATRL jettisoned all those old posts to try and fix their server (which, as we saw during this rate, didn't really work!). 1
