Graves Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 4 (Riverbank, Curaga, Take Me Apart, willmcclure9) LOWEST SCORE: 3 x 1 (AMIT) MY SCORE: 7.5 Part of a double single release to mark Utada's end of hiatus, Manatsu no Tōriame was paired with Hanataba o Kimi ni in April of 2016 and released as a digital single. This one was successful too, though not quite to the extent of the latter song. Still, a platinum cert is nothing to sniff at. There's a nice video for the single, though Hikaru does not actually appear in it. Manatsu no Tōriame was also used as a theme song for a news program, NEWS ZERO, which is... a little odd, considering the subject matter. Let's talk about it. Manatsu no Tōriame, or 'Midsummer Showers', is another song about loss. I think this is the song that most explicitly refers to the loss of Hikaru's mother, right? It's kind of heartbreaking to see them speak so openly about the crushing sadness that follows such a deep loss. Tracks like Ningyo and Arashi no Megami use folklore and mythology as metaphors for their feelings, but everything is laid bare on this song. The feeling of waking up in a world without somebody, now that everything's different and it can't go back. Wondering how they can say farewell in a 'correct' manner, or thinking of all of the questions that they'll never get to ask now... It can cut pretty deep! Especially when the strings come in at the end of the song. "A thirst that will never, ever be quenched By rains that will never, ever end." We have a huge fan in Curaga, "This could be an 11. I can see people saying this song is boring, too, but this one is a slow burn and it’s sooo beautiful." And what does AMIT think? Is it boring? "better than hanataba but does not even come close to her earlier highs." Interesting.

Ideally I'll bring us to top fifty. Wednesday: 50 - 41 Thursday: 40 - 31 Friday: 30 - 21 And that's where I need some input. How do we want to do the top twenty? I could do some strays over the weekend again and then just clear out the remaining songs in a big final bash next Monday? I could also skip the weekend strays if we'd prefer fuller updates, but that might leave us delayed until the Wednesday. 1

I was gonna say skip the weekend strays to let the top 20 each have their moment, but I guess a stray post is more of a moment than mixed in with a slew of reveals, idk. I have no problem with the rate lasting longer/until Wednesday, but I know people want the results lol.

I wouldn't mind weekend strays (unless it's my 10s and 11, then weekend ruined), but we're also approaching some serious business, so maybe extending the rate will be a good idea.

Cruel Summer Posted January 22 Posted January 22 I’m sad to see both of Fantôme’s lead singles out now - it makes me wonder if I should have been kinder to them. They are slow, yes, and they carry a different energy than her pre-hiatus work did, but they’re beautiful nonetheless. If nothing else, it was interesting that she chose those two songs, both slow, to introduce her first new album in the better part of a decade. It feels like that album won’t hold up as nearly well as I’d thought in this rate, with so much of some other albums remaining, but it’s still doing well. I’m comfortable with being its loudest cheerleader though (but maybe not its highest average scorer bc I was too careful nnn). 1
