poki Posted January 18 Posted January 18 To my surprise, it's been received very well Even Hikaru can't believe this track is liked 4
AMIT Posted January 18 Posted January 18 it's indeed a basic bop but considering the other options they gave us on that album we can't really ask for much else I fear 1

Graves Posted January 18 Author Posted January 18 HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 2 (bestfiction, Hey Dude) LOWEST SCORE: 5 x 1 (Suilen) MY SCORE: 5.5 Such an odd choice, isn't it? I mean, to write a teen love song centered around them being Bonnie & Clyde. I'm not the only one who finds it a bit weird, right? Look, plenty of love songs have been written about the infamous duo, but most of them are... like, more sultry affairs with an emphasis on a dark romance (just think the Jay-Z and Beyoncé song). This is an upbeat and peppy love song. I mean, maybe it's just too subversive for my lil brain, but I'm not sure what the logic was with this one. This track was featured as a B-side on the Movin' on without you CD about a month before it came out on the album proper, so there's that! I wonder if any people were sold on First Love off of the strength of the Bonnie & Clyde song? I think my favorite/least-favorite part of this are the sounds of tires screeching in the back towards the end. Is Utada trying to imply that this teen romance will end in a grizzly shootout just like B&C? Maybe there's a reason that guy wouldn't call her back on Movin' on without you... Curaga gagged me when I first got their ballot, by mostly slating First Love but deciding that B&C was the track they were gonna stan: "Wow, I like this one a lot better this time! This one sounds nice. Ooh, love the autotune near the end." There's room for everybody I guess! 2
Reverie Posted January 18 Posted January 18 I love youtube comments cuz people will spill their life story and change your perspective on a song that went out at #82 on an ATRL rate 7
Graves Posted January 18 Author Posted January 18 Normally that's where I'd leave you, but #80 is kind of a huge cackle so I think I'm just going to do it now. Give me five seconds!
Taste of Honey Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Parody is a favorite of mine. I've never really used Drama though. At least 2 of my 3 top faves from Distance are still here I think though(For You and Sunglasses). I'll just think pretend that y'all voted out the remix version of Hayatochiri instead of the original mix of it which is still one of her best R&B cuts. 1

Reverie Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Yeah I was so confused to hear her sing bonnie & clyde but I'm a sucker for that bubblegum sound
Curaga Posted January 18 Posted January 18 I might have been a little generous with my 7 for B&C, but I would hardly call that stanning First Love (the album) just isn’t it for me.
Graves Posted January 18 Author Posted January 18 11 x 1: gingguu HIGHEST SCORE: 10 x 1 (Hey Dude) LOWEST SCORE: 3 x 1 (AMIT) MY SCORE: 6.5 This is a big one, innit? First Love is THE Utada song for the Japanese GP. This is their most streamed track by a huge margin and still gets used to this day for commercial tie-ins, just look at the Netflix show... First Love. Well ****, named the whole damn program after the song - that's impact! Would you believe it wasn't even a #1 then? Well, it's not that crazy. It was a post-album single after all, and since we're talking about an album that sold over seven million copies... I think Hikki's okay with settling for a #2 peak. Just like Automatic, First Love got a 2008 ringtone release to celebrate a decade of Hikaru Utada, and a digital release in 2014 for the First Love fifteenth anniversary, and then another re-release, paired with Hatsukoi, in 2022 for the show I mentioned above... dang, can this song stop charting for two minutes?? Give another song a chance! Though not my favourite Hikki ballad, there's a sweetness to this that helps to understand why so many adore it. I mean, it's a song that gets these old ******* nostalgic for their idealized teen romances. The first time they held somebody's hand and got their young hearts broken. Eugh. As a milennial homosexual, I can't quite relate... but the video sure is pretty! Curaga is really gonna drag a 15yo for their vocals: "Classic song, but this is my number one example of her sounding like she doesn’t feel comfortable in her vocal performance. I don’t listen to this anymore because she sounds so shaky and nervous to me (mostly on the higher notes, like at 3:31–3:33)." Gurl. AMIT just drags EVERYTHING: "It's TOO sappy sorry." 1 1

Like if everyone on here had to post with their full government name and some numbers idk how I would act 1 2
Cruel Summer Posted January 18 Posted January 18 I also gave B&C a 7, but that was on the lower end for me for First Love tracks! She really did something right with the sound of that album, it just clicks in that perfectly nostalgic way. It sounds very of its time without sounding dated and bad IMO.

Ewan Chaos Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Um. Okay. It feels like this is really low but it also feels like idk why I'd expect it to chart higher It's a totally serviceable 6.5/7 song.

confide in me Posted January 18 Posted January 18 Didn't really like this song when i first heard it but it GREW... lemme give it a stream
Reverie Posted January 18 Posted January 18 I mean I have to agree a bit...I love the sound of the first two albums but her vocals get a bit screechy which can become a lot to bear in a 4-5 minute song for my social media induced ADHD brain. Like giving karaoke session with my friends and I. Don't get me wrong we give it our all which is what matters 2
