Antikythera Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 I'm so tired of those sob stories, yes there is pressure, but by now we have a lot of resources to deal with it especially if u have money, u have a lot of open examples of people who dealt with fame in a bad way, you can not do what they did. I think mental health is such an in topic now that everybody who works as an influencer wants a piece of it because it gives them publicity and relatability. In reality, they could deal with it by going to a therapist or/and a psychiatrist. Or maybe sit down and make a schedule that fits them, since they are their own boss. 1

My point (again) is that ''Gen Z'' did not have a hand in creating the conditions they have to live in. They are living in the world that was created by other generations. Gen Z did not invent social media or phones, that's simply the world they were thrown into. Again, you are doing the very same thing I am sure you at one point complained Boomers did when they dragged (and some still do) Millenials and even Gen Z as well for being ''lazy'' and ''too sensitive''. Stop it. That is a reductive cop out that leads us nowhere and only reinforces the harmful power structures we all suffer from. I'm not putting the blame on them but I also don't have the power to undo the past. All "we" can do is come up with solutions such as putting regulations on social media or even banning literal children from the internet to protect their mental health. 1
Badgalbriel Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 i don't get how this is tone-deaf. she's saying she's depressed and had to look happy on social media

Except you did do that, though. You spoke with contempt for them in both of your posts in this thread before this one I quoted, which is an easy pitfall to find yourself in, myself included. But yes, I agree there are no easy straightforward answers to this, but we can at least recognize where the problem stems from. As long as there is money to be made such as in the case of Charli and others like her, regulations can only go so far, although I like to believe they can be of help. The overall point about fame and how destructive it is is not confined to a single generation and/or medium however, and it's something we should talk about more, imo. 1
Leptine Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 Granted everybody deals with their own struggles and that's fine, but please save us from these pointless public statements especially with what's going on around the world currently.
Frappucino Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 Y’all shitting on her instead of using this as an opportunity to understand better people from her generation. If this is what she’s dealing with then imagine what her peers are also dealing with or worse … what people are trying to do to get to her level without knowing the ramifications of it.
Maroonx Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 seriously these tiktokers are sickening. I cant even 1
sciencemagic Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 (edited) The lack of nuance in this thread (as always on this site)… True, influencers have a less physically/mentally demanding job than most of society, but that doesn’t make them immune to mental health issues or struggles. Imagine having 100 MILLION people watching your deliverables at work. Some of y’all can’t even talk to someone at a bar or give a speech in front of a crowd because of “social anxiety!1!1!1” Remember this is a CHILD. As teens we were all trying to figure out our place in the world and navigate the transition to adulthood and probably had some tough moments along the way with so many insecurities and having a conflict over your identity— now imagine doing that in front of the whole world. Paparazzi hounding you when you want to get coffee or go to the gym, probably every morning she has a meeting with her publicist about headlines about her coming out that day, she probably has a feeling like people are only friends with her because of her fame/money… it’s tough!, especially for a teen. Sure, she could quit. But then she’s probably conflicted because there are parts she enjoys — obviously she likes dancing, but will she ever be able to do that without the associated fame and attention? That 70 million figure is probably a contingent number — ie she earns that if she does tiktoks, brand deals, etc. if she was an adult then you can expect her to just quit. But for a kid, that’s hard to wrap your head around. Some of y’all really need to think a little — use your brains (which are probably developed, unlike Ms Charli’s considering she isn’t yet 25) Edited October 31, 2023 by sciencemagic 1
Starships Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 @Saintlor What's tone deaf about anything she said in the video you provided? Maybe you're just deaf 1 1 1
Bosque Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 Money does not buy happiness and mental health does not differentiate for wealth either. It's the way she felt, she was asked about it so she talked about it. I don't see anything controversial in her statements. Obviously she wasn't going to talk about the mental health struggles of a minimum wage worker. Everyone is free to not listen to her podcast and instead pick up a copy of Nomadland or picket for Bernie Sanders
MonsterJohn Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 I'm convinced that people who "made it" are all narcissists, because what's this behavior
