There is ome biggest artist of century who has sales, impact, numbers and celebrity. But atrl will never accept it. They will think wearing meat dress will forever be more iconic than actual impact and numbers.

Beyoncé, Taylor, and Gaga come close. In my opinion, "fame" has evolved, and it's not so much that Madonna, Britney, and MJ had some enigmatic thing no other artist can tap into; it's that when they were in their peaks, the world worked in a very different way and reacted to stars differently.

I slightly disagree on this, I do think that social media does prevent anyone from ever reaching Michael's level of fame again, and there's not much space to innovate in music in the way that he did to create that following around him, but stars to the power of Britney and Madonna is still possible in my opinion, I just think music is suffering from a chronic lack of personality at the moment. We saw when Billie Eilish came up that people still crave something different and new, she rose to superstar levels overnight and only really fell off when she settled into a more traditional sound and image, she really could have pushed to crazy heights if she kept the momentum going.

her tour doing fine, i gave her that but she will never be on mj, madonna and britney level. :sorry:

She's dominating all facets of popular culture while on break from tour and it directly correlates with her discography's incredible success.

First of all they are not equal, Madonna never reached Michaels fame level

Anyone who witnessed Madonna's rein / peak wouldn't be talking such nonsense.

Michael's the King of Pop, so why do you think she's known as THE Queen of Pop?

Seriously, who can potentially reach the height of the fame of MJ, Madonna and Britney anymore?

Their impact, legacy and controversial is just something... fascinating, I might said.

The world is just obsessed with them.

Madonna absolutely did. She was the female equivalent in every way. Best selling female artist of all time, college courses devoted to teaching about her cultural impact, an entire subculture in the 80s was named after her, she was selling out stadiums around the world on her second tour, and is along with Michael the blueprint for modern pop stars in every department from touring (in all honestly, her shows were better than his), music videos, and image control.

NFL has been making a hell of a deal of her attending football games (calling themselves NFL (Taylor's Version) in their bio), companies are creating new sauce flavours based on a fan account comment. It was shown she's by FAR the most researched non-fictional Halloween costume. Thousands upon thousands of people were attending the concert from the outside of her concerts during her entire tour (on top of the tens of thousands that were inside). Everyone talked about her tour, everyone talked about her film. Her music is everywhere.

She definitely is in those realms of popularity and fame.

I think that each generation of artists reflects its era, and in a peculiar deterministic way, they can't escape the “mood” that they are born into. When contemporary artists draw inspiration from the past, they can't truly replicate the sound, mood, or, in this case, fame. Take fashion, for example; even with the current generation adopting an "early 2000s" Y2K style, they still look distinctly Gen-Z.

Time is both within us and a force that is stronger than us. That's why I argue we can't replicate "stars" from the past; the world evolves, and new standards of stardom emerge. Even Billie's fame isn't comparable to previous generations; she embodies a completely new kind of fame, and I appreciate that. People cling to old standards when they should embrace the present.

Some of you really hate Britney huh?

Anyway, Gaga kind of did in 2009-2011 and Taylor is doing it right now.

Britney was never and will never be on Madonna and Michael's level.

Anyway...

In recent pop music history...

I think Taylor, Beyonce, Rihanna, Shakira and Gaga (in 2010) are the best examples of an omnipresent pop referent

This forum is strange.

No one here experienced MJ or Madonna’s peak, you have to be like 45-50 at least to experience their peaks.

The most famous person I experienced in my lifetime was Britney Spears. That’s all I know

Gaga was close in 2010

Taylor is definitely the closest too right now, but her success commercially is still a lot bigger than her celebrity if that makes sense.

But Taylor is definitely up there this year

One theory could be that artists now "specialise" in different segments of fame that previous mega-famous celebrities did, but can't embody all of them. I think if you had a singer with the omnipresence of peak Beyoncé (referenced everywhere and known as the "Queen"), media presence of peak Britney Spears (tabloid culture, mega interest in personal life), artistic provocation and innovation of peak Madonna (constantly pushing the boundaries both socially and artistically), and fanbase and GP support of Taylor Swift (massive fanbase and massive GP support with as much musical interest as personal-life interest), you might have something akin to MJ. But again, I think the time we live in now wouldn't allow for an artist like this to even exist.
