Well, yes. My mom is/was a Janet stan so I grew up listening to all these classics :clap3:

I only knew Rhythm Nation (which weirdly didn’t go #1) but thank god I got into Ms Jackson’s discography and discovered this amazing album :jonny:

Cant believe you are using pure sales to put her above many current era girls. Also use equivalent method to determine best selling female artist in Asia. She won't be top ten.

You girls are lucky popping in a cassette and playing it on repeat never counter tows3rd chart points, which is ,basically what streaming is today. Because Janet would slaughter your faves even then. She was an absolute radio darling whose singles were spun around the clock 24/7.

A bit off topic but it's weird how so many pop eras from women are forgotten decades after.

Madonna has plenty of ww #1 hits that are forgotten, like Mariah, Celine, Whitney, Janet as well, Cher, etc...

Even the biggest hit from the 80's in the USA, Physical is yet to reach 100M streams on spotify :rip:

Meanwhile plenty of male rock hits from back then have hit 1b and keep rising every year

I didn’t know their names but knew one of them blocked Madonna from going #1 :suburban:

Why do people act like artists listing someone as an influence means that person is known to the GP? Janet can be as influential as she wants, the GP still does not know her music like that.

It's just an unfortunate reality.

She couldn't slaughter her rivals back then. What makes u think she will slaughter today?🤣 She is forgotten and has terrible streaming stats. Her album sales are absolutely below the level of other mpgs of her time, despite debuting  in sales era.

I'm don't think it was through Atrl but I learned about this album very late. Despite not being a stan or anything, growing up I knew her songs but not a single one from this album.

The Velvet Rope and All For You in particular were her most successful albums in France. I grew up knowing their songs plus Janet's. From all her albums, RN is the one, I think, that reached less globally. I never knew about it which is weird because in the US, it seems to be her most impactful.

Yeah this.

Unfortunately, she was pretty a non factor in Europe in general before "Janet" and especially "The Velvet Rope"

Her first legit hit here was "Whoops Now" in France :rip:

Thats not true for all of Europe tho.

Control had multiple Top 10 singles in the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland....

The Control album charted for 72 weeks in the UK and 66 weeks in the Netherlands. At the very least she was a big star in Dutch speaking regions, established hitmaker in the UK, and rising star in Germany etc.

Rhythm Nation was too American and the singles underperformed but the album still debuted at #4 in the UK, went Platinum, and the tour was completely sold-out. She wasn't some nobody.

Just because Janet didn't break into France until the mid-90s doesn't mean she was non-factor elsewhere. Plus at least she eventually did become big in France. Many people's faves on this very site have never had 1/10 of Janet's success in France. :michael:

I'm not shading miss Jackson. Of course she had some success in Europe during her first years but nothing groundbreaking compared to her monumental success in the US and Japan.

Her first 2 albums barely scrapped platinum in Europe and her having some success here and there, confirms that she wasn't a force, especially compared to her peers.

And there's nothing wrong about it, Just facts.

Yes because after the 04 Superbowl i became addicted to the RN performance and searched her discography. If i depended on my flop country radio stations i would only know Janet for her "All For You" era.

I don't know them now either. I've probably listened to all of them at some point but I have a hard time remembering which songs came from which albums.

who cares? the fact that im aware of them now is what matters. such bops! :katie2:

There was a wide variety of music in my house growing up and Ms. Jackson was in the rolodex.
