I knew of Black cat because I saw Christina perform it on the voice. I’m more familiar with Janet’s stuff from the late 90s and 2000s

Just now, Moth 2 The Flame said:

Point wasn't asking if you knew about her before you got into pop culture or not in the first place, but the #1 singles off Rhythm Nation and fair enough if you didn't but you took it further to downplay her legacy. And of course, it's mostly the same type of threads repeated in a different way to ignite and gather the OJH to repeat the whole I didn't know about her before I joined ATRL/local unknown posts. Especially knowing the OP's username and their previous posts about their dislike of Janet which most here have taken the bait.

You've been on this forum for a number of years now to know this and even decided to actively contribute to that downplay of Janet's legacy by that "non-factor in Asia" post, maybe secretly hoping no one would clock you?

That user was just in another thread saying that TS is a much better singer than Janet and putting the latter in the same bag as Selena Gomez :rip:

And guess who the OP is a stan of.. Clue: It's not Björk :gaydonnacat1:

Yes, I did.

I'm just glad the weird Janet hate train on this forum isn't as popular as it was a few years ago. I used to see threads like these all the time, but I'm glad users on this forum are finally getting educated on getting to know one of the best popstars we ever had. Let's not ignore the fact that in 20/30 years, a lot of the female artists you guys stan will not have the influence Janet currently has on newer artists.

i didn't even know of Janet Jackson's existence before 2014 which is insane cause she's literally a legend and Michael Jackson's sister, the media really tried to erase her legacy

and with that said, it's crazy that the biggest song (title track) peaked only at #2 and had that gone #1 she would've been the first female artist to have 5 #1s on one album tying with her brother and making Katy's record a little less exciting

I just learned it after reading the title of this thread. A few seconds ago :clap3:

I knew caise I love pop music and performers, but this album is totally unknown in my country, Brazil.

The only Janet work to have some promo around here was "All 4 U".

Many people here think her and LaToya are the same person. A Michael sister who looks like him.

Funny story: even though she is very much unknown here, I found physical copies of Damita Jo and I had a fake The Videos dvd I found selling in a place who sold pirated dvds. So, she has some fans to buy it. Mind u this was loooooong ago.

I hated I couldnt find her Hawaii concert and had to wait a long time and watch it in the internet and in the end I found it was a weak show.

Janet’s 90s era also reached Korea (That’s the Way Love Goes, Again, Runaway, Together Again) so I hope I don’t see any more comments regarding her impact in South Korea….

When K-Pop idols cite Britney and Beyoncé, they are indirectly citing Janet as well who is one of the blueprints of Pop performers.

I love Janet but tbh All For You was the first song I heard by her. I'm from Mexico and here she's nothing but Michael Jackson sister.

Janet to me was one of those artists where I had heard a ton of her songs, I just hadn’t realized until joining here that they were hers, if that makes sense. Like Escapade for example, I knew that hook so well but had no idea it was her. I knew her early 2000s well though, All For You remains 10/10 :clap3:

Yes.

Back in the day a club I went to often had a Janet night. I went hoping it was like the monthly Madonnaramas they have worldwide, all Madonna all night. It wasn't, they had Taylor Swift and other artists play 3-5 songs in between like 1 Janet song. That should speak for itself. Besides that, if you don't know these songs, but you know blackpink or Taylor Swift, why are you even on this website?

Honestly I don’t know what any of these sound like :rip:

Another hit thread on ATRL (a pop culture forum) where people proclaim not to know Janet or her music, as if this is a badge of pride. :rip:

There are only a few variants of responses to these threads. Select your fav from the drop-down menu:

1. "Yes, I'm a big fan. She's a legend."

2. "She's not known in (insert country or continent of choice). Here she's just (insert one of: Michael Jackson's little sister/known for that one song only/known as the Super Bowl lady)."

3. "She's not known by/influenced (insert my fav here). Britney is the blueprint." :rip:

It seems these threads are started in five-minute intervals, so for an ostensible unknown, Janet sure does get a lot of attention on ATRL. Spotify exists. It's really not hard to educate yourself. If you don't bother, then you either lack curiosity, you don't like good music, or both.

No but the moment I listened to her discography I was in AWE.

Nipplegate really hurt her, I feel like I hear her music out and about now WAY more than I ever did growing up.

It's funny that so many K-Pop and J-Pop artists are influenced by a "non-factor", I wonder how they even know of her!

Best selling internatinal female artists in Asia:

1.Mariah Carey 31m

2.Madonna 20.2m

3.Celine Dion 18m

4.Whitney Houston 14.3m

5.Enya 12.5m

6.Taylor Swift 11.9m

7.Britney Spears 8.8m

8.Avril Lavigne 7m

9.Janet Jackson 5.2m

10.Lady Gaga 4.4m

11.Sade 3.9m

12.Beyonce 3m

13.Jennifer Lopez 2.98m

14.Barbra Streisand 2.91m

15.Alanis Morissette 2.8m

Not too bad for such a non factor!

OT: Yes, I knew all for them. :gaynetcat1:

Cant believe you are using pure sales to put her above many current era girls. Also use equivalent method to determine best selling female artist in Asia. She won't be top ten.

Yes, I loved pop culture before joining ATRL and Janet has at least four classics

Posted

I feel like Escapade is one of those songs everyone knows or has at least heard. Before I even knew who Janet was, that was a song I was familiar with.

Rhythm Nation is iconic of course, so I'd at least seen the video.

Love Will Never Do, Miss You Much and Black Cat are songs I got into when I started listening to Janet actively.

Before I was a fan the Control and Janet albums were the albums I feel like people around me (older relatives etc.) gave more attention to.

Janet is a non factor in Asia so I didn't know most of her songs, even when migrating to the U.S., it wasn't until I got into pop culture that I learned about her songs.

Still don't know a single one of her songs aside from All for You, a career ending bop!

Not you trying to bring up Asia when they were obsessed with the Rhythm Nation era.

In fact, all four of the Rhythm Nation #1 singles were even translated into Cantonese and released by singers in Hong Kong. :deadbanana:

Miss You Much:

Escapade:

Black Cat:

Love Will Never Do:

Flash forward 30 years and tons of idols and groups in K-pop, J-pop etc still cite Janet as an influence, sample her music and call her a legend.

When will ATRL learn that all you need to do is just say “I didnt know her” or “non-factor in my household” instead of bringing up countries and continents to justify that is just not your bubble that didn’t know “x”. It ends up sounding ignorant when the receipts don’t back up the argument :rip:

I’m personally happy that music critics are doin god’s work and always bringing up Janet’s blueprint albums. More and more new artists are discussing her music as an influence. The Velvet Rope in particular has already solidified itself as an all-time classic among all genres. Janet’s run from Control to All for You is basically american pop canon by now
