Why was Witness so controversial?

Recommended Posts

I revisited it today and it’s just a slightly more colorful generic pop album with some really cute bops (Swish Swish, Bob Appétit, Witness, Roulette, Pendulum). Like it’s if anything I think it was an improvement on the toothless Prism. Thots?

Why does her fan base act like it was career suicide and that’s why she’s so out of style now?

It wasn’t controversial the problem with the album is she alienated her fanbase with her new image/branding. She cut off her hair and started to dress and act like a Karen. That was the worst you could ever do to your image as a pop star. She started to be seen as uncool and Karen like in 2017. She refused to listen to fans and continued to insist on this image throughout the era.

Prism and OOTB were more controversial with the queerbaiting on the latter and cultural appropriation accusations of the former.

The only true controversies was maybe the Britney joke (some thought it benign/Katy being awkward, some hated her for it), and the album not being woke enough & surface level, but the ladder was mostly just the typical popstar in a flop era type draggings & the personal critiques that come with it.

People were hating on Katy so much because of her image change, her 'odd' behaviour and antics. People were so turned off by all that to the point where they didn't even bother to check out the music. There's a general consensus here that the music itself is actually pretty decent/good

Funny thing is that she's always been quite quirky and odd but because she's attractive and was the it girl at the time people didn't care

The first single is Rythmless and boring. Her image and haircut were carreeer suicide and cringe. The other singles needed Dr Luke.

It wasnt really controversial. The real issue was that Katy changed her image drastically in such a way that alienated the GP from her. I know Katy was always kind of an edgy goofball but the black hair balanced it. With her pixie cut, she looked like a Karen as others said.

I would say tho that if Katy released a much better and more ambitious album, she wouldve fared better. Yes, she wouldve still flopped but it wouldve given her a fanbase that will stay loyal to her. Artpop was a huge disaster for Gaga and yet Joanne topped charts (for a week) despite everything.

Rih dropped her, Gaga + Taylor both hated her to a degree we hadn't seen between pop stars ever. Katy was a pariah within the pop music sphere. She also alienated the gp by changing her image. She had no audience left. Her albums are pretty consistently good with a few 11/10 bangers.

Nothing about the album was controversial or thought provoking. I think people just got annoyed after she marketed it as purposeful pop but then just released the same goofy songs like Bon Apetit and Swish Swish

Because she got political and pandered to the Demoncrats. She should have just kept it cute

it was a flop cause people were tired of her whatever she could do. Just because it was a flop doesn't mean it's controversial. As you said it's just another katy perry album. Only gay pop fans can write a 15000 words essay about an album being a flop cause someone changed her wig and calling "music changes" the same old genre of pop songs produced by the same old people.

Everything started when she supported Hilary real hard. It made her lose a big part of her conservative fanbase.
Alignin yourself with politicians is not good PR
Hillary Clinton her bestie Losin to Trump was also a big hit to her.  Mentally and Image wise.
In a world where Hilary Clinton won Witness is successful lol :giraffe:

  • Then she claimed of how she was coming with an Edgy album-Music with purpose but the album had songs like Hey Hey Hey-Swish Swish and the critics ate her alive
  • Then she cut her hair short and her sex appeal was gone. Short hair for straights is like long hair for so many gays. So many dont like it
  • Her album was too "Electropop" and the sound was almost over in 2017. Should have come with a whole Urban or Tropical House-Dancehall album instead
  • The album cover was too disjointed with the sound of the album. That cover would be justified for an Artpop-Alternative-Highly Experimental project
  • The songwriting was very bad-mid. Some of it very cliche. In my chubby little wallet.....open sesame...chinese water torture. etc
  • She started to look-act too "hypér" "overlygoofy" "chaotic-messy". Like a karen in a midlife crisis
  • The 2014 Bad Blood controversy damaged her a lot. Believe it or not it did. Of Course, Taylor got her karma with snakegate years later......
  • The migos homophobic controversy / the britney comments / fighting with her fans live about obama / the ellen interview / the dancing and messy performances / is math related to science? / All the crying in the era made her look bad and unstable-illuminati theories began (U cant show vulnerability. People are mean af if you show some weakness sometimes. Sad reality)

She also took the wrong decisions single wise:

  • Chained was a mid hit and everything was goin well cause the song was a different vibe for her and interesting and deep
  • Bon apettit was rumoured to feat Ariana Grande (Would be top 10 4 sure) then she gave us Migos and her commercial power was gone. Stan world backlash. The video was also too weird.
  • Swish Swish video was a cringefest and sinked her even more. From america's favorite  popstar to circus clown
  • Hey Hey Hey. Why was that single??? another horrible decision We needed Roulette,Witness,Dejavu or Pendulum.  :giraffe:

But the real downfall started when she selected Birthday-This Is How We Do as singles instead of WOA-LL and took other bad decisions.
Not promoting enough. Takin too long to release an album after Prism. Wasting her Superbowl hype.
Not releasing Everyday is a Holiday as a Xmas single. Singin Rise in the Democratic convention and gettin banned
Losing Dr Luke.  That was like the preparation-bed for the Upcoming mess. :gaycat2:

No catchy singles- CTTR was cute but it wasn't a pop bop that everyone loved Katy for

Fake wokeness - the hair cut seemed like a cheap trick to make us think she evolved

Hair - the straw that broke the camels back, we want sex appeal from Katy not a platinum blonde pixie cut

Idk but there ain’t a single day ATRL doesn’t talk about this album, it’s just too iconic :gaycat5:

Purposeful pop was ahead of its time.

Posted

We all know it was the image change and her trying to be political

If you're going to act like it's going to be a woke album every song and every single has to be. Releasing bon appetite and destroying the style is not going to prove anything.

Releasing pendulum as the second single and long blonde hair would have kept her afloat

I personally believe it was her styling at that time or either the sudden change of her sound from Prism.

i think it was a mix of

  • the first album she released after the Kesha v dr luke mess started and rumoured that one of the songs may have had a ghost credit for luke somewhere
  • the first album she released after Taylor's Bad Blood was rumoured to be about Katy
  • the Migos feature after rumours of the group being homophobic

and of course

  • drastic image change
  • (semi-)drastic sound change

were there any rumours about katy herself around this era?
