The Slayer Posted July 4, 2023 Posted July 4, 2023 Let’s keep this about DSL. Apparently it was #56 in the mids yesterday. Even though the song is flopping, I still think it’s great.

She wants to make it internationally and I think that's important to consider. She could fill the current void of an international (female) Black popstar (emphasis on international once again). I also think they need to capitalize and milk her story/experiences of being Black in the group even more. There's clear potential here. “Milking her experience being black in a girl group” The fact that this is seen as a way to get publicity and press is to milk race stuff?!! I’ve seen this tried with another artist and it didn’t help 1

It will backfire & it will come across as desperate. She just needs to give us a proper performance & release single two very soon I’d say mid August keep the momentum going.
Protocol Posted July 5, 2023 Posted July 5, 2023 This is solid but it doesn't quite go all the way as the pop anthem it thinks it is. The production needed more oomph in the chorus. And the "I need I need, I just need something that's real" part is kind of let down as the climax of the melody. Dare I say.... her voice is also weak on this. Too thin. Maybe it's the microphone they had her use, idk. It just doesn't scream smash hit pop diva vocal the way this song needed. It's flopping badly, which sucks. Based on how this is performing I'm not sure how the rest of her solo career will go.

Until we hear full albums from these ladies there’s no reason that any of them should be counted out. Saying that Leigh-Anne should stick to acting just totally disregards her singing talent and clear drive for solo music success, if you don’t like the song just say that. Spice Girls were a massive cultural phenomenon... and back in the late 90s/early 2000s any act that had a big push like the solo Spice Girls did was bound to chart in the Top 10 in the UK. All it took was a key performance or two on Top of the Pops or whatever. Totally different time. Now it's 10x harder to get a hit.

For one, Fifth Harmony were part of an American label and had worldwide hits. And Camila already had two Top 10 pop radio hits (the Shawn Mendes and Machine Gun kelly collabs) before she went solo. She was much better poised for a breakout hit. Jesy was ironically in the best position for a hit with the unexpected Nicki feature but... well...

Yeah obviously im not talking about a WW hit , im talking about a UK hit ... This won't happen either with Boyz or with Dont Say Love Their name alone won't take them anywhere. They needed a mainstream massive hit in their hands

If Perrie was the most popular it’s because she dated Zayn and is the hot white girl of the group. She strikes me as another Rita Ora. No identity. She’ll throw everything out and see what sticks. Jade is the one to watch. Not the Perrie slander when she could easily give Xtina competition with her vocals. Speaking of which isn't an identity crisis something Xtina's been suffering with ever since Bionic? 1 1

Scandalous Posted July 5, 2023 Posted July 5, 2023 yeah it’s a catchy enough bop but it’s too faceless and simple for her big solo debut single…i really hope her team has stronger material ready to go for #2
SinnerCity Posted July 5, 2023 Posted July 5, 2023 Don't say Love is a great lead single, it's catchy and she looks absolutely breathtaking in the video. Focusing on promoting it solely in the US was a TERRIBLE idea. They could've done so much in the UK after the first week of release to keep it in the top 10 but no, they had to choose to go to LA and promote it and for what? It did absolutely nothing. And to people saying Perrie was the lead singer, let me tell you something, she had the stronger voice but Little Mix worked as well as they did because they all contributed to its success with their distinctive personalities and voices. They all have the same chances at success if they do things correctly and release quality music. 1 1
Scandalous Posted July 5, 2023 Posted July 5, 2023 (edited) I think realistically the best we can hope for from these solo projects is a solid top 10 debut single with the right song and promo, i feel like it’s a pipe dream to expect any of them to be huge solo stars at this point in their careers - other recent groups who produced solo stars were only together for half the time that LM was so they were able to strike while the iron was hot. LM was already on a downhill trajectory with confetti (thankfully they had sweet melody to save the era) and Between us singles, and even that was almost 2 years ago at this point Edited July 5, 2023 by Scandalous

IAmJustAKnee Posted July 5, 2023 Posted July 5, 2023 @Mstreep @Power love @SweetTalker Omg guys I'm so sorry I don't know what I was thinking. I only said that because I thought it was a story that many could find relatable in a way. I didn't think about how it could backfire and how off it is to think that @Mstreep What member did this backfire on?
DemnisBreezy Posted July 6, 2023 Posted July 6, 2023 I don't understand, how can this be quite high on Apple Music but at the same time not be in the Top 200 of Spotify at all??
puchanginamoka Posted July 6, 2023 Posted July 6, 2023 The only reason why I keep replaying the song is because of the verses. I love everything about the verses especially the 2nd one but the chorus is so... limp. The vocals also needed to explode near the end but the big note was kinda weak. The music video looks beautiful but also boring? The storytelling left a lot to be desired and they put a lot of glamor shots instead of much-needed dance sequences. A shame cause it was clearly high-budget. Thankfully radio seems to like this and so it's not over for her if she plays her cards right with the 2nd single!
The Slayer Posted July 6, 2023 Posted July 6, 2023 It is insane how she's asked about a reunion so much already when they only disbanded a year ago.
