I don't know why people don't understand simple things.

African-American people mostly support movies with African-American cast

Asian people mostly support movies with Asian cast

Caucasian people most support movies with Caucasian cast

Same way teenagers enjoy movies about teenagers, gay people about gays etc

It has nothing to do with racism/xenophobia/homophobia, but audience relates to own race/stories/struggles/culture much easier. Hence Hollywood has recently started to diversify the cast to catch bigger audience.

Historically untrue at the Chinese box office. White men have enjoyed success in the Chinese box office for a long time.

Further, this isn’t some slave trade movie, or a movie with a predominantly black cast living the black experience where only black people would relate and understand the jokes. It’s literally little mermaid so that part is complete garbage.

Pretending that East Asia doesn’t have a racism/colorist issue when it comes to black people is willful blindness.

I never said racism didn't exist in East Asia or any other part of Asia.

I am calling out double standard of people here acting like this racism is one-sided. When African-American have been racist towards east Asians, as well.

Like if the situation was reversed and lead actress was an Asian girl, it would have least African-Americans coming to theatres. But it would have been fine with people here, who thinks Asian have to support everything but not vice-versa.

Y’all love praying on the downfall of women when they’re having a big moment. Always perched, just waiting to update your stupid little threads when a woman underperforms. The movie will do just fine in the US.

Not anymore.

The Chinese government has been going out of their way to squash American films in their market for the last several years because they've been desperate to have the highest grossing movie of the year. They wouldn't allow Spider-Man: No Way Home to be released there because they didn't want it dethroning their spot at #1 for 2021 (which of course, Spider-Man did anyway). Chinese audiences have such have been swiftly moving away from American centric films save for the occasional American blockbuster that makes it (and the movies that make it are usually part of existing franchises that have been historically popular there such as Avatar and Fast and Furious).

this is not news.. I'm Indonesian and one of my "friends" said that the ariel actress is "ugly". I had to shut him up.  and not to mention the worse comments on social media. it's irony how asian can be so racist towards black people.

is it really racist if some people find Halley "ugly" but find other black artists "pretty"?

And why is that? :bird:

The Chinese government has quotas on how many Hollywood movies are released in any given year. The Marvel movies were banned up until this year. The way American movies would succeed without the blatant suppression. And let’s not forget their censorship. :bibliahh:

Most Hollywood movies that want to release in China have gotten a release date so far in China after changing leadership in higher up, even for horror films like Megan. How many films do US imported from China this year? I would like to see the comparison because China is actually a lot more open about importing movies than US.

OT:

The general reception I got from Chinese people around me and online is that if Disney want diversity so much they should just create an original black princess without using TLM. Some of them who hate it are racists of course, but some of them just find her ugly and hard to look at, people are saying if it's a gorgeous black woman playing it they would actually see it. Also the custumes and production didn't do her any good, many people here were surprised that she actually looks beautiful in recent promo magazine shoots.

People so quick to judge. Guess the anti-Asian hate is widely accepted. Not our fault if America is literally built on racism and will never cease to exist no matter the progress. Yall are so miserable there. People just don’t care sometimes yall think Asians should eat everything up. The imperialistic minds of America annoy me so much.

I'm still baffled as to why your musty crusty racist ass is still allowed on this forum. You exude such pungent energy yet you're still here.  Time for them to take the trash out. Get your disgusting ass out of here.

Except it isn't a critical failure, whatsoever, and is tracking for one of the highest Memorial Day weekend openings ever. :clap3: We love to see it. I guess the influx of ATRL's usual racist trolls will just have to continue to seethe.

A movie with a black actress in the leading role flopping in China ?

Anyway, I can't wait to watch it.

Chinese people are unfortunately very anti-black so this isn’t surprising

Movies with black leads don’t do well there and the very few that did like Star Wars and Black Panther still had black people edited out of the posters in marketing :rip:

"Absolute rave reviews" is misleading and you know it. Yes, Halle is getting "absolute rave reviews." But Melissa's are more mixed, as is evident from the fact that we both posted positive AND negative reviews. And I'm sure more are to come :coffee2: She was not the person for the role and now the film is going to underperform thanks to her.

Most of the reviews and comments online are praising Melissa so just stop.

If the movie underperforms it will be because they changed the race of Ariel the lead character. Not because Melissa McCarthy, the biggest box office draw in the film, is playing the villain.

The delusion. :skull:
