Some of y'all salivating at the thought of this bombing is so ******* weird :rip:

Exactly and they're racists too, I'm sorry. There is NO WAY you are excited about racism towards a black woman unless you yourself are racist.

"The film, though, belongs to Melissa McCarthy’s Ursula. She plays the cephalopod sea witch as Cruella de Vil meets New York mobster – Tony Soprano with tentacles. Her scheming showpiece, Poor Unfortunate Souls, is a joy." — The Telegraph

"Undoubtedly, the clear standout within the supporting cast is McCarthy as Ursula, almost instantly making a case for her to play more villain roles." — Screen Rant

"If Bailey is the film’s big discovery, then McCarthy is its no-brainer. Dolled up to look like Divine’s evil-stepsister in her glowing green lair, the comic star’s just delicious as the movie’s deep-sea villain. Her timing is impeccable." — Variety

"As sea witch Ursula, Melissa McCarthy is as enrapturing as her tentacles. She reels back some of her signature gross-out schtick and instead goes full drag-queen fabulous in a performance that feels like Drag Race by way of Norma Desmond."  — Entertainment Weekly

"The supporting cast, for the most part, is also stellar. Melissa McCarthy takes on her role as the evil sea witch Ursula with wicked glee" — Slash Film

"Melissa McCarthy is another standout as baddie Ursula: giving a campy, deliciously evil performance, she owns every sly look and extravagant swish of her bioluminescent tentacles." — Total Film

The only person lying has been you, for MONTHS. Get over it. Melissa is unsurprisingly getting heavy praise for her performance in the film. Stfu already. :shakeno:

"Absolute rave reviews" is misleading and you know it. Yes, Halle is getting "absolute rave reviews." But Melissa's are more mixed, as is evident from the fact that we both posted positive AND negative reviews. And I'm sure more are to come :coffee2: She was not the person for the role and now the film is going to underperform thanks to her.

No, misleading would be putting "PANNED" in giant letters and then struggling to find four reviews - one of which positively refers to her performance as "commendable". :skull:

What we love to see is that you have been wrong for MONTHS and the critics are calling out your delusions. :clap3: Stay mad, because this film is going to be a huge box office success and Halle and Melissa are getting heavy praise for it. Just like we knew they would. :heart2:

China is colorist I heard.

I personally think the movie looks boring but I think the original little mermaid was too lol

But I bought a ticket and going to support so racist can’t win.

It's sad to see it happening, and I fear it won't happen only in China. Here, in Brazil, I don't see this movie building any hype with the audience, even with the marketing pushing it hard on social midia. And, unfortunately, if this movie bombs it's not gonna be exactly a surprise cause the rage was loud since the news about Halle being Ariel. And it's so unfair, cause Halle sings like an angel. Or, in this case, like an actual mermaid. And I bet she did a great job.
And the nerve to call her ugly. Racism makes me want to puke.

But you can't blame some of the critics about the photography, CGI, the animals with unnexistent charisma ant etc. All of that affect the final product, but "somehow", you know who will be blammed for this possible failure.

The movie debuted with 68% on rotten tomatoes, but atm, is on 71%. Let's hope people allow themselves to watch a diferent version of this classic and be inchanted by Halee.

We all know why.

Maybe Disney should not use so much money in their movies so they could be more independent of foreign markets.

East Asian movies including anime,  only gross several million dollars in the West.  So before you make dog eating jokes it's not like you're supporting their movies either.

The blatant racism against chinese or asians in general that runs through this thread is unsettling to say the least. The fact that people somehow think it is okay to piggy back and laugh at the dog comment just further proves how the anti-asian sentiment is widely accepted - all caused by some stupid box office stats. No one would even bat an eye if an asian movie flopped in the west or africa.

It’s so weird seeing everyone in this thread get caught in a tizzy over a bunch of different issues All stemming from Disney movie. Like. It ain’t that serious. 💀

Why are we actively making it a racism things.

Its not like Americans go all out to support Asian entertainment content, so its okay for westerns to ignore eastern content but if Chinese don't support some western blockbuster they are racist

Korean and Japanese content is HUGE in the US. Not to mention KPop. What are you talking about?

Please US radio don't even touch KPop, most of their chart run are sales driven by fan. US audience at large don't touch Kpop.

Biggest K-Pop act on Spotify US yesterday:

78. BTS

I guess being 78 means supporting, then China is also supporting The Little Mermaid.

I don't know why people don't understand simple things.

African-American people mostly support movies with African-American cast

Asian people mostly support movies with Asian cast

Caucasian people most support movies with Caucasian cast

Same way teenagers enjoy movies about teenagers, gay people about gays etc

It has nothing to do with racism/xenophobia/homophobia, but audience relates to own race/stories/struggles/culture much easier. Hence Hollywood has recently started to diversify the cast to catch bigger audience.

A quick self research shows that China is not THAT supportive of Western movies:

china-v-n-america-box-office-2014-2020.j

The most successful Disney movies like Frozen 2 or TLK remake are in $120M mark.

TLK in UK did nearly $100M compared to China's $125M which is insane considering China has a 10x-13x bigger movie market compared to UK.

Yes, I know. I am just saying people support content of their own country/race/age more than foreign. Not a pattern exclusive to China or Asian countries.

couldnt care less abt that, still gonna watch it

and btw ppl have different tastes... besides the reason of it flopping most likely being racism cause they hate black people

its gonna eat so badly tbh :celestial2:

The Chinese government has quotas on how many Hollywood movies are released in any given year. The Marvel movies were banned up until this year. The way American movies would succeed without the blatant suppression. And let’s not forget their censorship. :bibliahh:
