I swear, Asians are the WORST when it comes to racism. The fact that people in my country are calling out Disney for casting Halle and then commenting on social media “That’s not the Ariel I grew up with” or “Not my Ariel” all because she’s black. Truly vile and disgusting people. I hope TLM succeeds just so these haters can seethe and continue to stay pressed!

please :toofunny3: other races literally murder Asians blaming them for Covid but yeah Asians are the w0rST because they don’t wanna watch a movie :rip:

Do you know multiple things can be true at once, right? Asia, for the most part, has a real issue with black people. There's no need to deny that just because you don't want to sound like a crazy bigot. And yes, asian people also suffer a lot of discrimination from the West.

Try not to sweep a problem under te rug just because it's a difficult conversation to have.

How is Asian worst when the worst racist thing they probably do is disliking black people? Where in the west white racists are taking black people's lives? I don't see Asians killing black people just because they don't like them, they talk about it, but they normally wouldn't do physically harmful things to them, so I don't get how that is the WORST?

I understand. But asians/chinese people are just not "just" rejecting a movie. These issues regarding racism are deeper than that, and some people (including you) tend to shrug that off.

This is obviously disappointing but Chinese movies are extremely different than Hollywood/western movies in every single way. Chinese people are very particular when consuming movies. I find it a little hypocritical to critique China when the US doesn't even show Chinese movies in their theaters. Their productions simply won’t cater to westerns audiences . The same we could say about most Hollywood movies for them.

I really hope this pulls through in Europe, Latam and the US, though.

Enough. Both asians and whites can be racists towards black people. No one can deny that. In the Philippines where I live I can see a few people on social media complaining about Ariel being black but most of us love the film. When I watched the film yesterday the theater was 75% full and that was at 2pm on a Thursday when most people are at school and work. This movie is going to be a huge success! Period.

How is that true that Asians are the worst racists against black people?

What Asians do are not comparable to what white racists do, Asians usually are polite to them even when they don't like them, they don't go around with a gun killing black people. White people have much bigger issues in this regard but yes let's call Asians out as the worst racists when they have only been dealing with black people for merely decades, but they still treat black people better than the whites who have been in a society with them for hundreds of years and still can't accept their skin color.

Let’s not say Asians like we’re speaking about a whole race here with over 6 ethnic groups of people with different cultures, ideas, etc. so disgusting.

Not this thread turning into a who's the most racist competition :rip:

Can’t force the Asians to watch this movie. Americans so entitled that everyone should eat everything up 🪦

But when the Blacks is literally murdering Asians passing by, you can’t call them racists because they’re black.

While I agree that this is very disheartening and frankly, racist and colorist of China, I just want to further elaborate for the users here screaming 'Asians hate black people!' rhetoric that while, I agree with somewhat, it doesn't paint a full picture. The disdain East Asians and Asians have in general for dark skin is not because they're black per say, at least not in the same conventions racist white people usually have. Its more of a classist issue than a race one.

Dark skin has always been seen in Asia as poor and lower class by virtue of them toiling in the sun's rays all day, if you were dark skinned that meant that you were a worker, worked at the fields, in the farm, moving things, that has been well documented across many cultures across Asia. From the Philippines (the wealthy/elite lived in their big movable huts and spent their days politicking) to Korea (no working class citizen dared to even see the King or Queen's face because they weren't deemed worthy of their leader)

So while I do agree this is rather charged with colorism, I wouldn't jump ship to say China, Korea and most Asian countries disdain for dark skin is racist because their disdain is not towards perceived superiority towards another race, but rather, just the color of their skin. There's a reason women like Beyonce and Mariah Carey, do extremely well with praise and are regarded as global legends in these parts is because they're lightskinned. Races are not really something most Asians culturally care for so long as you present with lighter skin. Just a lil' something to give y'all nuance.

But I still do agree this was heavily problematic and hurtful for the Chinese and most Asian audiences to do.

Like what I said, there are lots of great and highly-acclaimed Asian-made movies, and you Americans ignored ALL of it. And that's okay, we don't cry about it asking you all to kiss our ass. But when Asians countries don't want to watch another tired remake of a talking fish, you all be crying about it and suddenly we are the biggest racists here? Stop the BS. I bet most of you hypocrite gays haven't watched any Asian films in your entire lives just because these movies had Asian people playing in the entire movie.

While I agree with your take that American perception of pop culture is very centralized, that topic should be sealed up for another day since its kind of a bad faith argument to pivot to that train of thought when we all know historically Asians in general have always had a distaste for dark skinned individuals portrayed in non-stereotypical light.

But I also do agree that the racism dick measuring contests by some users here are getting too extra.

It is true that many people in East Asia have many racist and ethnic prejudices, but I feel like this comment crosses a line and uses that as an excuse to express one’s own prejudice. Particularly the “truly vile and disgusting people” part.

Disney should close their theme parks there as punishment :biblio:

Hmm this is just another example it seems of how words used to define western institutions don’t apply cleanly to eastern societies.  Not to say this makes it ok, but only to say that the use of western vocabulary and the connotations associated with it can lead people to fail to understand what they are talking about.
