I think because of their temporal and creative proximity, it's perfectly valid to combine them. Evermore is often treated as an extension of Folklore even in respectful ways, so it makes sense - though I think there are those who diminish and disregard it with the same strategy, sometimes.

I think that the biggest difference for me - and the reason I find it very difficult to combine them, opposite to what you describe - is that Evermore is so much less proper, poised, controlled. When you hit play on Folklore, from start to finish you're getting a very specific and curated version of Taylor. It's a brilliant version of her and one of my favorite things ever to happen - like, listening to Folklore for the first time was mind-blowing. But there's a common thread there that keeps you in one relatively particular lane, this poetic, almost cinematic experience. Even Mad Woman is controlled, directed, and wise in its palpable contempt and fury. With Evermore, though, it felt like she lifted the restraints that were placed on Folklore, and we watch her meander a little further from the path both emotionally and sonically. I could see pretty much any Folklore song on Evermore, but I couldn't see most Evermore songs on Folklore, if that makes sense. Maybe Willow or Tolerate it, but certainly not Gold Rush or Marjorie.

It could just be me making up things, but I see direct parallels from Speak Now to Folklore and from Red to Evermore. In each case, the first (Speak Now, Folklore) has a more consistent sound and attitude, while the latter (Red, Evermore) jumps around, plays with more obviously synthetic pop sounds, and delves deeper into heartbreak as a theme. I think part of what remains so compelling about Evermore for some of us, compared to Folklore, is that it cuts directly into our own experiences and feelings. Of the two, Evermore definitely the younger sister who has a glass of wine in her hand for the entire Christmas party, who hugs you one too many times and shares one or two too many things that are too honest about her emotional state.

I could literally write for hours and hours about these two albums and about why I love Evermore so much, so let me just stop myself while I'm ahead.

I will say that other than that, your ranking is pretty close to mine, which is super cool!

What an eloquent and analytical post, you are the best member of this base by a long shot :clap3: Whew.

You’re absolutely right that folklore, like Speak Now, was Taylor showing she was a MASTER at crafting exactly what people expect when they think of her at her best, while evermore and Red are her showing that skill off and then pushing the boundaries of what we expect from her within the confines of a certain sonic palate. Excellent point about a lot of the folklore tracks meshing into evermore but the inverse of that not being applicable.

evermore sure is the sister who is a lot more blunt about things. :dies: folklore is the sister that tries to stay prim and proper but evermore is unabashedly assertive.

Ah let me have a moment with these two tonight, it’s been awhile.

I totally see this comparison from a sonic perspective! However, from a songwriting perspective I find the inverse to be true. evermore and Speak Now to me feel a lot more frayed at the edges and lend themselves to indulge in her most kinetic and frantic tendencies. I think she gave her pen a freedom that was more restrained on Red and folklore. I totally see your vision in grouping these 4 albums together, they're definitely in conversation with each other when you compare all of her albums.

It's interesting to consider that Red followed Speak Now which honed in her songwriting (imo) yet expanded her sonic palette, which was the main critique of the album at the time. I feel like when she pivoted her direction with folklore she learned from that and had sharp focus on both parts. evermore felt like she was rewarding herself by allowing her to indulge in all of the things she kept tucked away neatly in a drawer to serve the greater thesis of folklore. Almost like a dam bursting with unbridled creativity. It's equal parts Red and Speak Now in some ways, by way of production and songwriting respectively.

Maybe I'm alone in this idea but I do love to hear about the world building people do in their minds about her discography :bird: we all experience her work in such different ways

Never Grow Up TV continues to destroy me every time I listen to it. Her emotive mature vocal performance and the fact that a 32/33 year old woman is singing it instead of a 20 year old kid adds to the gravitas of the song :weeps:. Last Kiss also sounds more heartbreaking than the original especially that mmhmmm mhmmmm after the second chorus :weeps:.

what is the consensus on enchanted? it feels like the production lacks so much of that "oomph" especially right before the "This night.." chorus :emofish:

also, wtf is wrong with spotify and all the messed up apostrophes? "Taylor’s, Taylor's" like make a decision, now my scrobbles are all f'd up :rip:

Y'all are damn insufferable lord, this site will continue to call Taylor a flop even though she's the #1 artist in the world by a large margin because y'all won't stfu about her being some "flop", this fanbase has become so spoiled and irrational

THANK YOU SO MUCH :rip:

This is the exact reason why i don't go on ATRL every single day, i just can't stand the CONSTANT negativity over every little thing. SNTV is doing FINE, her whole discography is smashing right now, she's not "flopping" in any way. I adore Taylor so much but i really can't stand Swifties sometimes, the constant meltdowns over the littlest things are so tiring. I mean this is the fanbase that had meltdowns over SONG TITLES, let that sink in :rip:
