Why will Taylor Swift surpass Madonna?

Not happening, especially in the world we live in now where superstars being actual celebrities and being inescapable around the globe are no longer a thing. Madonna will always remain the number one.

Madonna will always be number one, I’m not sure why ATRL keeps trying to erase this fact. It’s looking incredibly likely that before too long, Taylor will be the second biggest, though. :clap3:

Madonna and Taylor being the top two female artists sounds so right. :jonny5:

i dont think its impossible for taylor to surpass madonna but i think it would be extremely hard given all the paths madonna opened for pop music and at in tiself, plus i think the time madonna was the most active, stuff use to stick aorund longer when no feels like everything passes by very quick and doesnt leave a strong everlasting impression

She has surpassed her in the US where Madonna has no Diamond selling album (Like a Virgin is certified based on shipments and half of TIC numbers come from less than a $1 Club sales), #1 year-end album, 1 million opening weeks, but she will never come close to Madonna numbers in Europe for example, especially in countries like France, Italy, Germany where Swift has embarrassing pure sales.

you are discounting Club sales, but free streams seem to be ok as a legit measure of sales?  Make it make sense.

You're welcome!

Girl, this is a terrible take :rip: The Beatles were known for pushing the boundaries of how music was made, especially from Rubber Soul onwards.

Sex appeal was a key part of their initial success (don't ask me why) and they definitely had their fair share of controversial moments.

Beatles burning.jpg

OT: Madonna and Taylor have nothing in common other than being incredibly successful women. Not only do they come from generations that consume music in radically different ways (physical vs. streaming), but they appeal to different audiences. Taylor's appeal relies on being America's sweetheart. Country roots, family-friendly image, does not offend, does not provoke and every move is carefully planned to maximize her sales and come off as relatable as possible. It's no surprise she has kept her original fanbase on her side by giving them exactly what they want.

Madonna might the Queen Of Pop but she has never been universally liked in that way and I don't think that was her aspiration either. She is here to push the boundaries. She knew exactly the kind of reaction she would get for Erotica or American Life but she didn't mind sacrificing her commercial profitability to make a point. It's no small achievement that despite being so polarizing, she has stayed on top for decades.

No doubt Taylor will eventually surpass her EAS, in part because she would never do anything too risky that could potentially jeopardize her career but Madonna will always be remembered as a true trailblazer.

What a way to close this stupid thread :clap3:

And Ed Sheeran will surpass Elton John. Does that make Ed better, bigger and more impactful?

Huh? Ed could double his total units and he still wouldn't match Elton John's units so I fail to see what you were trying here

so reading this thread, it’s basically just an impact vs sales talk

i’d rather have sales, at least you can measure that. Madonna can have the impact her stans claim that she has.

In the US, surely.

But WW is still a long long long way to go.

Anyway they are different artists, Madonna is more known for her iconic image and bops. While Taylor is an album artist.

free streams doesn't equate to sales, sorry.  I don't care what they say.   Taylor will never surpass Madonna globally.  It's impossible.  Both impact and sales.  I mean...let's compare Shake It Off to Like a Prayer in terms of impact.  Let's discuss this.  No really, lets...

WW it will never happen lol.

In terms of pure copies, Taylor sold 6 million copies in Europe while Madonna sold well over 80 million. :rip:

Historians, social scientists & other professional scholars alike (and they were posted here, actually, they're quoted in this very page)  have written enough about Madonna's impact for us to comprehend that it's vastly bigger than Taylor's.

As for sales, that's factually incorrect lol. You can't measure that. You do realize that even Billboard's method for stream : sale ratio is purely arbitrary and is not some gospel to follow, right? Lol. There's absolutely no way of equating streams with sales while basing that on any rational pattern.

Madonna is the best selling female artist of all time. That will never change. 'units' are based on an arbitrary method in hopes of creating some kind of old school order on the charts. But in terms of making sense, they don't lol.

So you're double wrong :giraffe::giraffe:

Madonna and Taylor Swift being the top 2 bestselling female artists feels so RIGHT!

Also- I feel like a variation of this thread is made every few weeks? A tacky and boring way for OTHs to get together and parrot the same "Taylor has no impact outside of sales" line :rip: get a life!!!

All the "streams aren't sales!!1!" posts in here are serving so out of touch. Get with the times girls, it's 2023.

To answer the question: Taylor is just that good at what she does. Songwriting legend, artist of a generation. :clap3:

The only people who like Madonna are 50+ year old hags who sniff poppers while scrolling through Grindr and are still livid about Lady Gaga becoming everything Madonna isnt: a respected multimedia legend. Dont worry, those fans'll die of lung failure soon enough though from all that leather cleaner inhaling and by then Taylor will reign supreme in this hypercapitalist landscape enacting forced legislating to make sure we stream her albums DAILY. Who cares about the impact of running around on a cake dressed in a boy belt wedding dress when you've got: 9 albums certified 4x Platinum!

We Swifties will make sure every trace of that youth obsessed woman will be ERASED from the annals of history and all that will be left is the video of her sitting in her bathtub talking about how grateful she is for COVID 19 being the great equalizer! As the future in healthcare I will make sure that my private clinic once I go into plastic surgery will have WARNINGS of nothing but Madonna's botched surgeries over the 36 years of her pretentious career!

We dont need 'impact' or a 'sex book' or 'implied sex with Jesus', we need NUMBERS, we need SALES, once Taylor reigns supreme she can just say 'gay rights' and all homophobia disappears, Madonna had to do all that extra **** just for an ounce of attention and did not even progress society whew my fave cant RELATE.

Taylor is able to hop around genres and make sonically cohesive records we force ourselves to listen to everyday. No one cares about Madonna outside of the LGTV community and even then its just like 3 of her singles.

I'm yelling :bibliahh:

I remember there was an iconic post on oldTRL in which a katycat would tell liddos that they would haunt them down or something like that when Gaga was flopping, this one has the same energy about it

The way almost no one replied to the topic and tried to avoid the actual fact of her eventually outselling Madonna covering with impact ****

Yeah impact doesn’t mean sales, but did anyone say that? Haters just really having a hard time and not knowing what else to say :coffee2:

Because is not a discussion

Madonna is at 240M unit sold just and only for Album.

Taylor must be, at best, around 100M

So yeah, is not a discussion
