Did Gaga ruin her chances of being the new Madonna?

I’m sorry but being “the next Madonna” is extremely unrealistic. Madonna was one of those once in a lifetime type musicians I don’t think anyone can or will fully recapture her impact. Same with MJ

This.

Gaga is an absolute icon in her own right but it was a different time period when Madonna (and MJ) did what she did commercially and culturally. Mass media and the industry moved a lot different. If an artist/musician is worth their weight and truly matters to music, they will eventually lay claim to their own legacy no matter what time period it is and I think Gaga is doing that.

Gaga never wanted to be the new Madonna; she had much higher aspirations... which she fulfilled.

Overall, Gaga's trajectory has been much more impressive simply because of the times we live in. Most of Madonna's (relevant) career existed before the advent of social media and the Internet in general. Madonna existed during a time when it wasn't easy to be replaced; once you staked your claim, you were on top for a very long time with little to no competition. The industry in which she thrived wasn't rapidly changing and she didn't have to struggle with the evolving technological world. It wasn't the same for Gaga (and her peers). She was at constant risk of being replaced or forgotten and the industry she had to battle changed from month-to-month. She had to learn how to use social media, she had to learn how to transition into the streaming world, and she had to fight the battle of short attention spans. And she did. And she succeeded.

Overall, what really made it clear that Gaga had surpassed Madonna was the moment she won that Oscar and became a respected, acclaimed actress. That was something Madonna had tried to do for decades and never could. It showcased the true difference between the two: talent. Madonna is talented, obviously, but not in the way Gaga is. That is why now in 2023 Madonna is stuck resorting to the antics she has to resort to for attention (and is dancing to 11-year-old Lady Gaga songs on social media), whereas thirty years from now Gaga will remain a respected, successful actress and musician still doing whatever it is that fulfills her artistically.

About wanting to continue Madonna's legacy:

“I don’t want to sound presumptuous, but I’ve made it my goal to revolutionize pop music. The last revolution was launched by Madonna 25 years ago.” - 2008

About being signed:

"Vincent Herbert, who signed me, got us the Record Plant [studio], I felt like I was, you know, Madonna in 1985." - 2009

From Paparazzi MV BTS:

"You guys don't understand, I'm going to be like Madonna." - 2009

UK MTV Interview:

"What's a party without a Madonnathon? I don't know. [...] You don't get any better than Madonna." - 2009

2009 AMAs performance:

"I want it to be like an ode to Madonna." - 2009

NME Interview:

"I was thinking about Madonna, she was a big inspiration and I was thinking about Prince when I was writing [Born This Way]." - 2011

"I love Madonna. Of course I do. She's so brave. She was so brave. And I, every day, when I'm working think about bravery. [...] She's really so talented and such an inspiration and I only hope I can be half as inspiring as she's been." - 2011

"I genuinely love [Madonna] so much. I think she is so amazing. She could never be replicated and, yes, I’m Italian, I’m from New York, and not for nothing, it’s not my fault that I kind of look like her, right? So, look, if anything, it’s more annoying to me that people would insinuate that I don’t like to be compared to her… She’s wonderful and inspiring and liberating, and she’s certainly inspired my (‘Born This Way’ album)."

Probably that was her idea when she debuted but it's good that she paved her own way and didn't try to be the next Madonna, she would've been left in the 00s, early 10s if she would have followed that path.

Rihanna is the only one who ever got the closest tbh.

She should have carried out Artpop to the very end.

All of her eras since seem slightly(or greatly) half assed except for ASIB :gaycat7:

i mean you’re not wrong but this is such a 2014-2017 take. as mentioned in this thread she’s modeling her career after people like barbra and judy garland now. cher is probably the best point of comparison- someone who successfully transitioned into acting.

i know madonna stans don’t want to hear this but madonna’s reputation has tanked since 2010 when gaga was at her most madonnaesque. she was coming off of confessions and hard candy then, but her music has been garbage for a decade. she’s actively terrible and creepy on social media. her attempt at directing movies has been a dismal failure. being the “new madonna” doesn’t sound appealing anymore.

da straight up delusion and lies

Madonna had no competition? since when

Cyndi

Annie

Whitney

Janet

Paula

Mariah

Celine

all women are icons or legends dat Madonna went toe to toe on da charts

music consumption went from 8 track & vinyls to Cassettes to CD and was ne of da first artists to use music video to their advantage

Madonna may not have gotten an Oscar nomination but she has received acclaim for her roles in Desperately Seeking Susan, ALOTO, and Evita

Not the Monsters acting like Gaga didn't want to be the next Madonna lol

They tried to market Gaga as the Queen of Pop but Madonna already had the crown.

They dragged Madonna during Gaga's peak only for her to become a 00s fad and have to turn to acting to stay relevant.

Gaga is consistently one of the most streamed females of the year. Calling her a 'fad' should be an automatic troll point by now. It's as asinine as calling Madonna a fad. Threads like these are wild to me as a stan of both - Gaga being inspired by and loving Madonna and her music does not mean she wanted to be 'the next Madonna'. Just glad they're both streaming elixirs now because that has class to it.

So stating facts about Gaga makes you an OGH? :rip: Besides, the quotes all relate to Madonna so it's natural that a Madonna stan would  be aware of them!

Gaga's music output since 2011 has been so awful that she cannot even be considered a Female Ludacris at this point.

She is more talented and respected so I doubt she'd want to be like Madonna.
