MariahCarey 3.02M Jan 18 1. Madonna 3.65M 2. WhitneyHouston 3.26M 3. MariahCarey 2.95M Jan 17 1. Madonna 3.33M 2. WhitneyHouston 3.12M 3. MariahCarey 2.86M Why is Madonna ahead of Mariah despite one having better exposure due to xmas. Mariah gets huge amount of promotion every year which Whitney or Madonna don't. But they are still ahead. Why? And the gap will only become big by mid year when full exposure of Christmas is over. About 450M of that was her Xmas catalogue (two albums + an EP + a handful of singles). So her non-Xmas catalogue had roughly twice the amount of streams. For comparison, Madonna received 1.1B Spotify streams in 2022. Both because of several TikTok viral hits, new remixes (Frozen, Material Girl, Hung Up) and a healthy boost to her catalogue. OT: Madonna’s catalogue is seeing a boost with her Tour announcement and Back That Up To The Beat going viral. The argument is brought up ad naseum and every time it’s been shown that Mariah’s catalogue simply outperforms Madonna. 2022 was a great year for Madonna’s Spotify performance. It was the first time her catalogue categorically outperformed Mariah excluding Xmas. Usually Mariah’s catalogue does about the same or better than Madonna without Xmas: 2021: Madonna 872M total 2021: Mariah 1.2B total (~350M Xmas music) Madonna is doing great on streaming right now. I’m not sure why Madonna stans feel the need to always include Mariah in the conversation when Mariah easily outstreams unless you remove her biggest hits. And for October 2022: Mariah - 91,259,619 Madonna - 88,776,323 Mariah also regularly charts catalogue albums (Daydream, Emancipation, Music Box typically) on Apple Music and its a fair assumption that she does far better there. She also regularly appears on charts for Melon and other Asian streaming platforms. --- This topic is honestly irritating because it's done to death, these two are the top tier 80s/90s divas, and the numbers are so similar (and the lead switching so much) that it's not worth threading.
