Gwen Stefani: “I’m Japanese!”

I said "for better or worse" for a reason. I think it's a complicated issue, that i honestly don't know exactly where I stand on, and am certainly not educated enough about to have a real opinion. I'm simply stating that I think Gwen's "take" isn't simply her being ditzy or out of touch...it comes from a very specific world view tied to the ska scene and ska music she grew up in (which plenty of people criticize these days too for the same reasons).

You don't know where to stand with regards Gwen wanting to trademark asian culture, more precisely, Harajaku?

Where did I say anything about that? I said that Gwen has real, thought out opinions about this topic (wrong or right...but also probably held by more people around the world than the authors view), and that the article unfortunately left that out for the most part and focused on what makes it seem like just some silly oblivious comment (which sure, the specific "i'm japanese!" quote probably was...but there was tons of context left out).

In terms of the court case, if you want my opinion on that...i really have NO idea about it. But if she tried to trademark "Harajuku" then no i don't agree with that. If the trademark was Harajuku Lovers or whatever, then I don't particularly have a problem with that (based on my very limited understanding of the court case).

Maybe she is japanese but apparently she is not in the studio recording a worthy follow-up to Love Angel Music Baby?

I love love love love Gwen, but I don't like that she said "I'm Japanese." :(

She's my absolute favorite. :'(

In terms of her being inspired by Japanese culture and proudly saying it, good. Cultural appropriation is such a US-centric problem that usually only angers a particular set of white Americans. Barely anyone, and literally nobody outside of the USA, is going to care about this.

Copyrighting a term you didn't coin for a culture you didn't create or lead, however - now THERE'S a conversation to have. I seriously hope they only trademarked the specific phrase "Harajuku Lovers", which itself is still bordering on problematic.

i just don’t understand what would possess her to say something like that after YEARS of backlash :rip:

She stands true to her belief.

Not some ATRLers acting like Japanese people should even be thankful Gwen "promoted" their culture to Americans huh??? :deadbanana4:

Not surprised since even racism against Asians is brushed off or downplayed by many members here

I don’t know where I stand on this. Because if you ask Japanese people in Japan how they feel I’m sure they’ll be happy the Eurocentric white blonde woman is utilizing their culture for branding :rip: (not sarcasm by the way)

She sounds dumb but there is nuance that I’m not sure Americans quite grasp yet. She very clearly is not doing anything maliciously nor is the end result offensive. It just feels a bit like that one white girl who tells everyone she must be part African because she has curly hair

If they like it, I love it

Most people don't cater their every thought and word around how jobless strangers on the internet might react? People who have actually seen the world and other ways of life know that there is beauty in appreciating and honoring our differences. Gwen knows she isn't ethnically Japanese - she grew up immersed in Japanese culture and developed a deep appreciation for it. It's cool that she represented some of that in her music and imagery and helped expose US audiences to other cultures.

Honestly, my biggest problem with the article is that it was a 32 minute interview... and we got like 3 short Gwen quotes lol... So there's no way to understand the full context of the silly eye catching quote.

Cause the thing is...I don't actually think Gwen is simply "out of touch" or "tone deaf" or needing a better publicist etc...I think what often gets missed is that for better or worse she's actually quite passionate and resolute in her belief that cultures are meant to be shared and traded and mirrored back and forth etc, and that that actually brings us closer together and is a positive thing. It's very much a part of the ethos of the ska music and ska scene she grew up in, and if's clearly something that has stuck with her and that she's not backing down from.

Exactly!
