So far the album does not sound better than NFR for me but i think that it will be her strongest vocally :)

Most of y'all didn't even like the pre released NFR songs aside from VB. And even that one got some heat.

I think it’s helpful to remember that there’s different kinds of “melodic writing”. You have melodies that follow a very specific formula, with the notes and chord progressions all very tightly constructed and the melodies are instant because they’re easier for the brain to pick up on. But Lana’s songs are typically different. She’s actually one of the most talented melodic songwriters. Her ability to craft original but timeless melodies should be studied in my opinion.

But Lana’s writing, the chord progressions she chooses and the structure of the notes in her melodies usually lack distinct and repetitive form, so they sound maybe “dull” or muddy at first. But the more you listen, the more your ear will pick up on the nuances of the music and you’ll warm up to it. Suddenly, you’ll find yourself singing along and see just how rich her melodies really are. Knowing this is why I never fear anymore when one of her songs doesn’t smack me on the first few listens. I know by now that it will smack me HARD down the line, after my tenth or so listen.

Wow :clap3: you are a genius. You basically just said the truest truth ever. Very smart! The fact that Did You Know that TATUOB and A&W and even the Grants to some extent didnt exact do it right away for me the first time hearing them speaks VOLUMES! The more you listen to them the more melodies and geniusness you can start to pick up :jonnycat:

Babe, it’s got hooks. They’re just buried deep beneath the surface.

If a Lana song instantly clicks with me and I’m instantly singing along, that’s never a good sign. I’ll be sick of it by the third listen. :giraffe:  It’s why I love Lana’s music on a level I could never love any other artist’s because her songs require so much time to fully appreciate them but they still entice you to keep digging in. Whereas other artists have songs that don’t click right away but the incentive to keep giving the songs a try just isn’t there, I’m afraid! Oprah Essence Fest 2016 GIF by essence

The Grants is a masterpiece. Lana experimenting is always so good. :jonnycat:

My sister's first-born child
I'm gonna take that too with me
My grandmother's last smile
I'm gonna take that too with me
It's a beautiful life
Remember that too for me

This part particularly hits me right in the feelings, in many ways I find it pretty relatable. I think this is the track I find relatable the most out of the three she's released.

Also, where are the visuals Lanita.

Ditch Fingershits, Kintsugly, and the two interludes and you have a much better album :clap3:

Have you even heard them? :rip: And don’t slander Klitsuggi. That’s the song I claimed and I know it’s gonna gut punch us.

She’s not even offkey

Dunno what to think about The Grants. I like the melody and her vocals are so nice and clear but the intro is kinda unecessary and it goes for too long.

This is probably her weakest opening track to me, at least for now :loud:

Ohhhh wow, thanks so much for this analysis. I have never articulated this *phenomenon* to anyone since the UV era. I still remember so distinctively the first over 10 times or so listening to Born to Die, Blue Jeans, West Coast, Ultraviolence and Shades of Cool, the melodies didn't stick for me at all. I annoyingly found the songs' melodies a bit hard to get, BUT there was still some nuanced elements that kept me coming back.

Until, just like you said, they suddenly smacked my ears h.a.r.d.

This has kinda stopped happening, as my brain has been re-wired to pick up her melodies much faster, but man I really miss that enlightenment phase of brain finally clicking and being immersed in her melodies.
