Schami66 Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 I know it's probably important to care about the numbers and how successful this movie is gonna be but I'm just here (as a consumer) happy that it LOOKS/sounds/feels amazing. I'm not a huge fan of the live-action disney movies but The Little Mermaid was my favorite movie growing up and it's SO close to my heart, that I'm just happy that this movie is full of heart and passion for the story, characters and music. (But I think we can forget about a sequel now, right? haha) 4

But I think they nailed it, it was so colorful and lush and Halle was so striking. 1

Adam’s Eve Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 (edited) Just finished watching and this was kinda underwhelming. The film started off good but then went downhill after Ariel gets cursed. It was too long and parts of it felt rushed. Halle was decent in this but everyone else was garbage, the fully animated characters (basically Sebastian and Scuttle) were better than the human cast. Melissa was bad and didn’t evoke the feeling of Ursula at all, she looked bored half the time and the makeup was awful. Same with the actor who played Triton. 6/10 Spoiler Forgot to mention the ending scene with Ursula was tragic. Melissa was serving go girl give us nothing and then just rolls over and dies. A hot mess. Edited May 29, 2023 by Adam’s Eve

Stepfon Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 Am I the only one who doesn't get the raves for Melissa's performance? She brought NOTHING new to the character of Ursula at all, choices were clearly made. 2

No, her performance was straight up reductive and her 2018 Oscar nomination should be rescinded and given to Toni Collette in Hereditary retroactively.
GraceRandolph Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 Melissa did a STRAIGHT UP Pat Carroll copy+paste performance.

Aladdin had legs in the US, which nobody saw coming but nobody predicted the support from Asia. Aladdin was actually the biggest live action in Japan for example, more than "Beauty and the Beast", also doubled the earnings of "The Lion King". It's clear that racism is a big factor for this movie not working in Asian countries but it's not the only factor. The OST is also not making any noise. The Aladdin OST went viral in Japan and South Korea, with tons of idols making cover of songs from the movie. So racism and sexism. let’s not pretend that women can’t also be sexist.
JoAddams Posted May 30, 2023 Posted May 30, 2023 I liked the movie even though I was initially skeptical. My main complaints about the graphics & script (maybe). Unless the ending seemed a little crumpled (it was brighter in original). And... pleased with Jodi Benson's sudden cameo. Spoiler I was very pleased that they had saved out story of Ursula's family relationship. Also I'm upset about absence of Chef Louis & his epics with Sebastian.
Kylizzle Posted May 30, 2023 Posted May 30, 2023 (edited) She doesn't give it up exclusively for a man in the original or this one. She's always been interested in humans and wanted to be human, her love for Eric is just the thing that finally pushes her to do it. This is subtle in the original but extremely spelled out in the remake so I'm not sure how y'all missed it. My main question for both is why Triton can't just turn her back into a mermaid whenever she wants to visit home. I'm actually surprised the remake didn't attempt to overexplain that. Jessie Posted May 30, 2023 Posted May 30, 2023 (edited) I was willing Melissa to eat but yeah it felt very much like a Disney mum cosplay or something. She did a good voice impersonation of Carroll at times, and I did like when she had those flashes of anger in the PUS reprise but it goes to show how flat the supporting cast were that she was the most interesting performance outside Halle. Javier Bardem was lifeless until his final scene with Ariel. Honestly whoever played Vanessa kinda ate her up as a villain in about 5 minutes of screen time. Also the attempt at giving heft to the kingdom by trying to vaguely outline a more progressive political system, references to trade deals and ending malaria like, we get it, you want motivations that feel more “serious” and modern but it just added a layer of tediousness to a story that was already feeling stretched in its adaptation. I still loved Ariel looking out into the distance at the end, I just wish the added context wasn’t so overwritten. Evermore >>>> Wild Uncharted Waters. The latter was still a pretty decent addition, certainly above whatever Awkwafina was doing. Ariel’s new song was good too, as was Kiss the Girl. Above all though Ms Bailey truly deserves her flowers for how she carries this film. I mean that Part of Your World reprise — the acting, the longing, the singing — was beyond stunning. In Little Mermaid II: Return To The Sea, Triton does turn Ariel back into a mermaid for part of the movie, but I’m guessing it uses too much of the trident’s power to transform her regularly or something.

I'm not sure I can accept any of those direct to DVD sequels as canon but that makes sense? Yet also removes the stakes of the movie since her decision means nothing and she can just have both worlds
