The marketing has been fine, the reason is clear - Ariel is black

We all saw the negative reactions that continue now, I didn’t think it would even gross $500M at first so if it does 500-600M that will be above my expectations even if technically an underperformance

Though the recent predictions did get my hopes up at first

Now we are all going to have to endure another round of GOWOKEGOBROKE circle jerking.

Even if it grossed $800M it would still be labelled a flop by the “gowokegobroke” mob for not grossing 1 Billion like Black Panther 2 was :skull:

It's clear that Disney needs to get their budgets under control. 300 MILLION FOR INDIANA JONES 5????

It's actually absurd. Granted I think the Indy budget ballooned from reshoots and delays when Harrison had an injury on set. Bro is oooold lol.

I disagree, if it hit $800M I think the worst of that mob would be a lot quieter about it.

history has proven that disney princess movies with a female name tend to not do as well, hence why Disney turned Rapunzel into Tangled, and The Snow Queen into Frozen.

the original The Little Mermaid didn't even do that well in theatres, but became big thanks to home video release.

I think the positive reviews might help the movie more in the long run

i don't think the marketing was too great

they focused a lot on halle and the impact on black kids, which might have alienated other kids (or most likely their racist parents). And with how quick they put the live action Ariel in the parks, to dumb people it comes across as if the 1989 ariel got "replaced".

that plus the bad reception of the animals and the CGI in the trailer/teaser phases

but this world is rotten so it could also just be racism. seeing how bad it's doing in asia is very telling :'(

This was a bad move. It came off insecure on Disney's behalf. We don't need an explanation, or constant reminders of how important representation is to justify a black Ariel, they should've just said it was a colorblind casting process and Halle was the best fit for Ariel.

Cinderella had a budget of 85M-95M. If I had to choose, $120M for the Tiana remake is more than enough. A $35M for more extra animation needed. I hope Disney does not act dumb this time.

Girl, there is no excuse in the world that justifies racism.

Is the international or domestic

box office more of a disappointment? And what’s the reason?

The domestic box office is good even if the opening weekend was a bit frontloaded.

It's the overseas box office that is very bad for any number of reasons

We should have a thread where we can discuss domestic and international box office gross weekly. So we don’t have to make a thread for every movie..

Disney's original classic Ariel was a white girl with red hair... people used to watch that version...Also many people disliked the CGI on Sebastian and the other characters under the sea ..135 minutes are too long..

Aladdin did $214M (not 207) WW first weekend. In comparison without Korea, China and Russia TLM is at $190M WW and it is doing a little bit better in North America and a little bit lower in other big markets so far. I think $165M  is off the mark. Probably the total must be around $175M, IMO but let's wait.

The overseas portion is less than what Dumbo made :rip:an A-List Disney movie like TLM should be performing more like the other Renaissance era movies

I don’t really care about supporting an evil multi-billion dollar company like Disney but I’m just glad the movie was good. :clap3:
