Can someone explain to me what IZ*ONE’s. Whole deal is?  Where did they come from? Where did they go? Why does it feel like they are not talked about as much despite apparently being pretty big?

Genuine question, how do you classify K-Pop groups by generations? Does it only apply to girls?

They were formed on a reality TV show, Produce 101, hosted by MNET (a huge media powerhouse in Korea). Reality shows always help with promotions in Korea and being formed on a reality show is a good guarantee for success (TWICE, Kep1er, etc.). They started off strong by having Sakura, a member of HKT48 and AKB48 participate. Over time, Wonyoung became the it girl in Korea and her popularity exploded.

IZ*ONE’s contracts expired and they will fall on the list starting next year.

It applies to all artists that debut in a certain time frame and it has more to do with the major three corporations putting out new groups and the ages of the idols. It can get confusing because sometimes there are half-generations, like when f(X) debuted just two years after Girls’ Generation. In time, ITZY and (G)-IDLE may be classified as Gen 3.5 instead of Gen 4.

In about a week they’ll have a massive jump from the release of their new mini and even though they’ll be #2 in pure sales, they’ll be #1 in streams and #1 in digitals.

It’s not a hard thing but the you can generally tell the line when older groups start to comeback fewer and fewer times and the Big three have all debuted new girl or boy groups.

The 'generational' concept basically identifies a particular wave or time period within the k-pop landscape that has its own musical identity and other defining characteristics (fashion, visual aesthetic etc.) and is most typically just classified by specific years.

1st Gen (birth of k-pop) - 90s to mid-noughties

2nd Gen (the defining era) - 2005ish to early 2010s

3rd Gen (kpop's globalization) - roughly 2013 to about 2018

4th Gen (modern era) - evidently 2018 to present

It's not just limited to girl groups. Any act that makes a professional debut during their respective time is categorized as such.

Majority of kpop groups last 7 years(or less) unless they’re super successful. kpop companies need to debut new groups to keep the machine running and the newer groups will gravitate to newer musical trends and visual presentation and on average be much more successful as kpop gets more global. It creates a very distinct line between the generations.

Kpop is partially funded by and is supported as a political strategy of the Korean government known as Hallyu wave. The generations as a whole are almost like phases of the plan.

Now that we’re in the 4th generation, groups from major labels are able to pretty much immediately chart and tour almost anywhere in the world after debut.

Thank you for explaining this!  Why did they let the contracts expire?  They seemed to be doing really well!

Usually, but not always, every girl participating on those survival shows/reality shows is already a trainee from a k-pop company. When a member of the winning group gets really popular after 2 years promoting - for IZ*ONE that member was Jang Wonyoung - their original company from before is unlikely to renew because it doesn't see much $$$ incentive to let them keep being on there and will want to debut that member in a new group with fresh trainees. Jang Wonyoung was from Starship Entertainment and so was An Yujin - they went back to Starship and debuted for a 2nd time in IVE.

They call these survival shows “project” girl groups. Ultimately their role is promotion.

For the idols and their original record label, they establish the idols so their follow-up groups and promotions are a success (all of the former IZ*ONE members have gotten super successful when they returned to their original label). This is a huge win because those idols end up leading their new groups to success, making the other girl group members a success, too.

For the label that created the project group, they get the majority of the profits while that project group is active, plus they’re always owned by a broadcasting station. That broadcasting station not only gets exclusive rights to the survival shows, but they also get great relationships with the record labels which keeps the artists coming back to them to promote. It’s a win-win for everyone.
