Why is Celine Dion considered a legend?

What kind of question is that???

Lets have a quick history lesson shall we:

• Céline is credited for introducing francophone music to many non-francophone countries around the world.

— “she has done her bit for French music over the years, assuring the success of French songs which would probably never have got beyond Francophone borders without her ... Without Celine, French record sales would be dramatically lower!

- RFI Musique

• Céline is also credited for both revitalising and revolutionizing the entertainment scene in Las Vegas. She pioneered modern residencies and brought it back to the map.

— “She changed history and she completely changed Las Vegas”

- Billboard

— Dion's show created up to 7,000 indirect jobs and around $114 million worth of new economic activity in each of the three years for which she has been contracted in Vegas.

• Céline's music also made cultural impacts in different parts of the world:

— Jamaica: Dion's appearance at Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival changed the festival's future. According to Walter Elmore, CEO of Art of Music Productions said Dion is by far the most expensive artist he has ever booked, further saying: "I have already received calls from the management of several major US artists who want to perform here next year because they heard Celine's comments about our show's production quality," Elmore said. "Her performance confirms that we can bring the biggest artists on the planet to our little island."

• Her music and her vocal talent has helped inspired a generation of artists:

Adele

Ariana Grande

Frank Ocean

Sam Smith

Kelly Clarkson

Ava Max

Vanessa Hudgens

to name a few...

MICHAEL JACKSON attended one of her Vegas shows.

Beyoncé once said she has the most beautiful voice in the world. Cher said she has the best voice in the business. Diane Warren said she is the greatest singer of her generation while David Foster said she is the best singer there is. Elton John said she has the best vocal power whose able to sing anything. Michael Bolton once said she is a gift to us. Kelly Clarkson said she has two set of lungs. Prince wrote a song specifically for her after getting impressed. To top all that, Adele has a framed chewed gum of Céline in her house.

You can say her music isn't your cup of tea, but you simply can't deny her global impact. You really think nobody listens to the woman who sold 250 MILLION records worldwide. Reminding you all of her english studio albums received a certification in UK (that's from 1990 - 2019). She is 1/3 of the vocal trinity, her sales is only surpassed by Madonna. Most importantly, she did all that as a French artist in the industry.

:clap3: :clap3: :clap3: :clap3: :clap3:

I did not know about Jamaica! Wow!!! :flower:

We should also think of her more as a WW legend than an American one, though she certainly is that too.

Consider that her 2016 French-language album sold more first week copies in France, than the 2016 releases of Ariana Grande, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears sold for their first weeks in the US, the world's largest market, and one that is 6x larger than France's.

Céline really is THAT French singer, and if you go to Québec she is basically QUEEN.

She is the best-selling French-language artist of all time, has the best-selling French language album of all time.

Her album S'il suffisait d'aimer went #1 in EVERY major French-speaking country.

She has charted French songs in non-French speaking charts too, and one of her French singles even went Top Ten in the UK and Ireland.

She was getting diamond-selling French albums all the way in the 2010s.

And most of the success is less about just the song alone and more about CÉLINE and her voice.

She is a legend, come on!

This is even more impressive when you lay it out like that. :clap3:

Céline Dion is also really popular in Nigeria. She is one of the best-selling and most streamed artists in MENA region (Middle East & North Africa). She's also the best-selling female artist in Africa. She is also the 2nd best-selling female artist in Europe and 2nd best-selling female artist in Japan (in terms of album sales).

Her sales and continued popularity should be enough to cement her legendary status. I also don’t understand how people can say that My Heart Will Go On is her only

well known song. Beauty and the Beast is Disney’s biggest animated film of the 90s, are you telling me kids never heard of her song from that movie?

I would argue that while some artists may not list Celine as their primary influence when they were younger, I think they use her as a guide when it comes to nurturing their careers and maintainable relevance. Celine started the Vegas trend, showed how you can be popular without being a tabloid fixture. Celine has shown what it takes to preserve one’s voice.

And she has a particular brand of kook that is quite endearing. She was a major long term Saturday Night Live character for a reason, unlike any other female pop act. Her interview with Larry King after Katrina where she admonishes the Bush Administration for their inaction and then flawlessly sings one of her songs is so perfectly Celine.

she's also one of the hardest working artists there is. she has so much respect for those who work for her and people she come across with. a down to earth diva really.

People in their 20s might not recognize Celine because she’s not in celebrity gossip. Many younger people might be aware of Madonna/Mariah because they are in the news often for their antics/questionable performances/etc. That’s also not shade to them at all, but that’s the truth.

You also said it yourself in the OP, this is a specific demographic. If ATRL started 10 years earlier, there would be just many Celine fans as there are Britney fans. Also, Celine’s main demographic is not on music forums.

That being said, as a fan of “pop” music, I would research her. I’ve never vibed with her music but it’s clear she’s one of the most respected/talented/successful/legendarywoman in music of all-time.

because let’s take away the epic proportion of sales and units she shifted in such a short time; she has many influential and legendary reasons which she deserves to be credited for:

-1/3 vocal trinity - rebuilt and reshaped adult contemporary of recent times ; her haunting tone and power ballads contributed to help inspire a new generation of singers and make labels confident in that AC ballads would remain ever popular throughout the 90s/early 00s.

-helped introduce to the world the french music market - her French album smashes influenced consumers to check out other French music, which no other French speaking artist had the level of exposure to do so before

-cemented the power of soundtracks - beauty and the beast, because you loved me, my heart will go on ………demonstrated time after time again that soundtracks would never fall out of fashion and she helped to prove the two art mediums were still in a symbiotic relationship.

-vegas - the first to completely revolutionise the Vegas residency that we know of today.

-fashion - outside of music, she ventured in high fashion to help create a fresh image to the public, and has many designers appreciation.

musically speaking, she’s still crazily played on European radio a lot too!! ?

I mean there’s 5 legitimate reasons.

Perhaps the disrespectful atrl users on this thread are used to spamming and shoving e.g. BTS, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears and Gaga through their poor eardrums on the regular, but if they took a minute to turn on a radio station or speak to a person irl (things that don’t involve tapping a screen, but actually tactile/tangible things) they might discover a whole other world out there - including how much airplay, ticket sales and catalog sales Celine still gets.

All of this :clap3: Céline is a global icon and has remained one for decades. Atrls faves like Britney or Taylor just cannot compare in terms of talent or impact.

Not five pages of respondents coming in just to end this insane question. Hope the BBMAs 2017 performance alone can answer your question!

Fun fact:

In 1996, Céline released a 30 million-selling album right after releasing the best-selling French album in history (1995). Few months later, she released another 30 million seller (1997), then proceeds to release the 2nd best-selling holiday album by a female artist (1998). The following year, she released the best-selling greatest hits album by a female artist since 1991 (2nd overall behind Madonna's The Immaculate Collection).

She's got a ton of classics. I guess soccer moms listened to her albums when they bought them, but I doubt anyone got them on replay to this day as they are not classic albums by any means despite the gargantuan sales.

But that doesnt make her global. Thats like saying singer Baekhyun is global for having albums selling 1M copies in South Korea

:rip:

Her hits (not just MHWGO) were actual global smashes that appealed to diverse audiences, not just "soccer moms" and "old people". Unlike most of the so-called "global" female pop singers praised by the deluded gays on here and only do well in western Europe, Celine has actual had major success in Asia (not just Japan and East Asian countries), Africa and the Caribbean.

And where on earth did that user get the "fact" that she stopped selling after her 4th album? More like her 14th. :toofunny3:

I swear I’ve never heard a song by her aside from MHWGO :skull: Her songs aren’t really on the radio here I feel and no one I know is a fan of hers

But her sales and touring numbers are super impressive so a lot of people must like her

You should listen to her hits. She has a lot of great ballads. My favorite by her:
