Are there similar cases where an irrelevant artist with a very old song created an organic hit on radio/sales/streaming? I'm talking about the USA. Or is this a unique situation?

 

I am not insulting Kate in any way, I mean that the artist is unfamiliar to the general American public and did not have huge hits there.

 

One of my classmates showed this clip and thought that the song is 10 years old, because. it was uploaded so many years ago on YouTube.

Dreams & Something In The Way both had big revivals in the past 2 years but not on this level.

 

The last time a 20+ year old song smashed like this globally was “Unchained Melody” which was originally released in 1965 and smashed in 1990 after being featured in Ghost.

 

EDIT: Bohemian Rhapsody was originally released in 1975 and reached a new peak in 1992 after being featured in Wayne’s World

Fleetwood Mac are legends but they haven’t been “huge mainstream artists” or relevant for decades now. 

 

If you meant has an artist that’s never smashed in the U.S before ended up smashing with an song 20 years later then no…I don’t believe so. That’s very specific.

So Pop can play something without an actual airplay release?  It was released pre-Soundscan/Nielsen/Mediabase-era, I doubt it had a radio release.
