@Ryan

@Chemist

If we could get a Mpox then monkeypox in parentheses update on the thread title it'd be appreciated.

If you're MSM and haven't had both shots I would honestly just lie about your sexual history to get both Jynneos shots before there's new strains of this that reach the other continents then there's inevitable shortages :coffee2:

Should also mention this thing's now airborne by the way :coffee2:

Spoiler

The pictures are not pretty, so I've put the tweet in spoiler mode.

Note that the current outbreak is of a different clade.

WHO declares mpox a global public health emergency for second time in two years | The Straits Times

The outbreak in Congo began with the spread of an endemic strain, known as clade I. But a new variant, clade Ib, appears to spread more easily through routine close contact, including sexual contact.

Why mpox is a global health emergency — again (sciencenews.org)

Three public health officials sit at a table during a meeting to decide whether mpx is a global public health emergency.

WHO is asking for $15 million from the global health agency's emergency fund to pay for increased surveillance and countermeasures. WHO is also asking other countries to donate vaccines from their national stockpiles. Japan has already stepped forward to offer up its own version of the mpox vaccine. :clap3:

_____________

And this time around, children have proven to be particularly vulnerable to the virus. As of May 26, two-thirds of the cases reported this year in Congo, or 5,254, have been in children age 15 and younger. And 87 percent of the deaths, or 321, have been among that age group.

Same. Was checking in with a friend who covers this stuff professionally about if there's a booster needed but nobody seems to have a clear answer because of how new everything is rn.

It seems like health officials can't say definitively because it's not been used enough yet; there's evidence that suggests a booster would be effective, but I was told places like NYC aren't going to be giving them out. I'm pretty sure having both doses is an ample amount of protection though, no one seems to be under the impression that the protection wanes like with covid

I never got my shots last year because it was only available in short supply at the health department in my town.  However, I was able to schedule an appointment for next Wednesday at CVS without disclosing my sexuality and sexual history.

Wow, interesting.

Insurance covered both my shots in full but only with the prerequisites of a health history given. Keep us posted.

I wonder if I have to pay for mine then.  I would've been fine disclosing my sexuality/sexual history but the CVS scheduling portal didn't ask. :michael:

I may call the health department tomorrow and try to get an appointment there instead.

This paper on 50 DRC cases in South Kivu province: "The direct transmission routes are unknown; however, it is expected that the majority of infections were transmitted via occupational exposures ... Heterosexual partners dominated human-to-human contact transmission suggesting that heterosexual close contact is the main form of transmission in this outbreak. Furthermore, Professional Sex Workers (PSWs) were the dominant occupation among infected individuals, indicating that PSWs and clients may be at higher risk for developing mpox virus infections."

This article on 220+ cases from Sept 2023 to March 2024 in South Kivu: "It appears apparent that heterosexual transmission could be driving the transmission rates in this region ... Furthermore, evidence of heterosexual transmission spread is supported by the fact that currently, female sex workers constitute a big proportion of cases (29%) in this cluster ... The findings from this cohort suggest increased risk of transmission associated with heterosexual (92%) and homosexual transmission (4%), with women largely affected."

From what little I've seen, Japan has also developed a third generation vaccine (that is similar to Jynneos) known as LC16m8. Probably not available worldwide?

Mpox vaccines likely months away even as WHO, Africa CDC discuss emergency

However, sources involved in planning a vaccination roll-out in Congo said only 65,000 doses were likely to be available in the short-term, and campaigns were unlikely to begin before October at the earliest.

There have been more than 15,000 suspected cases of mpox in Africa this year and 461 deaths, mainly among children in Congo, according to Africa CDC. The viral infection is usually mild but can kill, and causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions.

A new offshoot of the virus has caused outbreaks in refugee camps in the east of Congo this year, and spread to Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and Kenya for the first time.

Ivory Coast and South Africa are also experiencing outbreaks linked to a different strain of the virus, which spread globally in 2022, largely among men who have sex with men. This outbreak prompted WHO to declare a global emergency before ending it 10 months later.

Then, two vaccines were used - Bavarian Nordic's Jynneos, and LC16, made by KM Biologics. Outside clinical trials, neither has ever been available in Congo or across Africa, where the disease has been endemic for decades. Only LC16 is approved for use in children.

Congo's regulators approved the use of the vaccines domestically in June, but the government is yet to officially request any from either the manufacturers or governments like the United States looking to make donations through the global vaccine group, Gavi.

There's Clade I, Clade Ib, Clade II, Clade IIb, and I think this current outbreak is driven Clade Ib. Mortality rate is about 10% or 10x that of Clade II?
