There's a few problems I've had and continue to have with this challenge on a personal level.

 

The biggest one being that my knowledge of well-known songwriters is...very little. I couldn't tell you what encompasses the elements of a Queen song, or a Joni Mitchell song, or...well spin a wheel and name any artist from a decade before 2010 known for their songwriting and chances are I'm unfamiliar, or at least not familiar enough to confidently say what makes their style theirs.

 

The other big issue I have is when I am familiar with an artist, I tend to tread a bit too close to an already-existing song and it just sounds like those one-hit wonders trying to make lightning strike again in the most pathetic and desperate way possible with a lesser version of the hit. This was especially a problem when I did a Christina Aguilera-inspired song back in PH7.

 

I suppose my OTHER other issue is that I just don't feel qualified enough to even dare emulate a songwriter known for their lyricism. Even after studying their lyrics and working out what makes their writing "tick", so to speak, I just don't think it'd be fair of me to do so because I wouldn't really have a connection to them. As ironic as it may sound, participating in a lyric-writing competition and all, I care more for what the music sounds like than what message the artist wants to get across...not that I can't appreciate good lyrics/be put off by particularly BAD lyrics, but generally I don't make having good lyrics a qualifier for if I find a song to be good, and that tends to translate into my listening habits. Most of my library is just songs I think sound good, regardless of lyricism. This aversion to the "great" lyricists is probably ultimately what sets me back in these challenges, however.

 

I don't really have a point with this post other than to say I like my entry but I wouldn't be surprised if I don't quite hit the heights I'd like to with this challenge.

Honestly if I was playing I would feel pretty much the same as you do, this challenge would be a nightmare for me and I’d probably get in my head a lot about it  (that said I did get a #1 in PH7 in a challenge that was similar to this, I forget the actual description but you basically had to be inspired by and reinvent a pre existing song I think, so who knows maybe you will prevail )

 

But from a host perspective this was mostly just supposed to be a fun challenge for early on in the season, where players get to be ~inspired~ by their faves and reference them, imagine them singing the song etc.

 

I wouldn’t worry about it too much, to be honest. We aren’t experts on any of these artists so it’s not like we can say “wow you FAILED this challenge!!! definitely only giving you a 2 FLOP”. It’s very open to interpretation and that’s not going to be forgotten when it comes to judging.

No, literally same. The way I still listen to The Fool and it continues to amazes me. I genuinely consider it a modern day classic tbh, Ryn her genius is so overlooked. Whenever she releases again, I’m almost certainly going to be blown away (especially if Child King and Reasons Not to Die are anything to go by!!!)

Right  It was my #1 album of 2015 and that was a highly competitive year on my Best Of, and it's easily in my top 10 of all time. I didn't listen to that Child King leak enough but RNTD is excellence, especially for a damn DEMO. I just wish she wasn't such a perfectionist that's also going through label/finanicial issues.

Sis you need to listen to Child King more, a masterpiece. Very intrigued to hear what the final version will sound like. Also, wonder if she will still put Reasons Not to Die on the album? It’s a few years old at this point so I could see it not being including, but it’s also a masterpiece and I want to hear what it may sound like in a final version too

 

If I’m right, I think she tweeted a little while ago saying that she had secured funding and that things would be coming soon? This is months ago now so it’s like, where is it sis… she also said that she was going to release Child King last year after the leak, but of course that never happened. The thing is, when the music is SO good, I’m prepared to wait however long it takes tbh. See me in ten years still waiting for this album, I’m gonna be there, and it’s gonna be worth it

Just listened again and it's cute  It actually gives me more demo vibes than RNTD does. I don't even need a final version of RNTD at this point, the one we have is perfect enough and I also don't need it on the album. At least it has a home on that one compilation record & was featured in a Netflix film.

 

Yeah I've seen all her updates  I just don't know what to believe though! Yup I'm the same way, I'll keep waiting forever but obviously I'd love to have it ASAP! I really thought it was time when she dropped the pool picture last March.
