Any dog is trainable. Pitbulls are sweet and cute creatures.

People that say "bad owners" have no clue about selective breeding.

In the 1950s, the Russians did experiments in creating tame Silver Foxes, where they took captive, but untrained wild animals, and through selective breeding over 50+ years, created a tame animal (they also bred some to be more aggressive). The important thing to understand is that those Silver Foxes were not trained, they were simply bred and the most docile, well behaved foxes were used to breed the next generation.

Pitbulls are the opposite and have been bred for aggressiveness over many generations. You can't just give it lots of love and "train it to be nice", you need to run your own breeding program, so that perhaps in 50 years you might have some well behaved Pitbulls. But they won't be quite like the Pitbulls you started with and of course if people let them mate with the aggressive ones, you're back to square one.

The rules should be the same as lions and tigers - if you're allowed dangerous lions and tigers as pets in your city/state/country, then maybe you should be allowed Pitbulls too.

I think their owners should be SEVERELY PUNISHED for negligence with them .

That will solve the issue

THIS.

My mom has a pitbull and he would never hurt a fly.

Nope. They are bred to fight, even if that's not what they end up doing ever in their lives. Unlike all other normal animals, pitbulls will continue to attack after being seriously injured, even losing a leg in some cases.

Typically when a pitbull attacks out of the blue. It isn’t really out of the blue. Pits have very subtle signals before they attack, that’s what makes them such good dog fighters. Most will get dog aggressive at some point in their life. Usually by early maturity. They were bred to hold huge 2,000lb bulls by the face, and in the last couple hundred years they were bred as fighting dogs. When a pitbull fights it isn’t like other dogs. They bite and hang on. They have what is called gameness. It makes them rather die than let go. That’s where the old wives tale about them having locking jaws came about. They don’t have locking jaws, they just won’t let go. It is also the reason why when they attack it usually involves massive trauma to the other dog, person, Child, cat, or farm animals. They are genetically predisposed to have dog aggression. Some owners may be lucky and their pit never attacks anyone. But most will at some point attack an animal, and in some cases people. There will be people that tell you it’s all in how they are raised. They seem not to get that people raise them from birth and their dog still attacks. The pitbull doesn’t need to be trained to fight, it is in their DNA. They fight to win. And winning to a pitbull is death. It’s not their fault that they were bred that way. But it is peoples fault that owns them and treat them like a Golden instead of a high drive working animal. If you own a pitbull or really almost any bully breed you should know how to make your dog release it’s bite to do the least amount of damage. Don’t pull the dog away. Either use a bite stick to open their mouth and let go of the victim. Or you can use a slip lead and let it tighten around the dogs neck until it lets go to take a breath. Do not let go of the pitbull, it will continue attacking even after people hit them, throw things at them, beats them. They have high pain tolerance and relentless drive to finish what they started. Keep yourself and others safe by teaching your dog to wear a muzzle when out on walks and exercising your dog appropriately to fulfill their needs. They aren’t nanny dogs, they aren’t herding dogs, they were bred to fight. So when you own one, it is your responsibility to keep others safe.

I can't believe people still believe dogs aren't good as pets. Are we in 16th century? All dogs are good, their owners are the problem.

It’s the way that these dogs are being used and abused in a certain way that should be the focus here. It’s so easy to distract and just lazy to say that it’s the dog’s innate nature. You’re not seeing beagles and corgis getting bred to do certain things that a larger and stronger dog can do better

for obvious reasons. Studies show that, when bred and cared for properly, all dogs can be “good dogs.”

Yes. Very ugly and aggressive breed. Just ban it. There many other well behaved and prettier breeds to chose from anyway.

Also it's almost always some shady, agressive, anti-social and ugly struggle faced drug addicts who own them (at least here in Germany). :gaycat6:

I'm just gonna say you probably grew up thinking they're monsters. I've met multiple pitbulls that are the sweetest.

That's just anecdotal evidence. The statistics tell a different story.

Even the most famous dog trainer in the world can't keep his pitties under control :toofunny3:. Pitbull owners should be ashamed of themselves for playing dumb and endangering others with a dog breed that was originally BRED to KILL.

imo all dog owners should have a permit like gun owners or people who drive, but that's a conversation y'all are not ready to have

this tbh. sure not all dog owners are problematic infact most of them aren't, but if there's a simple way to make the amount of accidents even less, then so be it.

Plus dog breeding is an extremely cruel and overdone procedure

The issue is the owner and the lack of research when owning a certain breed of dog.

Dog breeds have certain characteristics that will become an issue if they are not trained or handled properly. They are still animals, they are not going to be picture perfect beings. If you cannot properly train or raise a dog that is a descendent of a bull-baiting dog, then you should either look for another breed that suits your desired characteristics in a dog, or not own a dog at all. It's that easy.

Statistics are misleading.  Research tells a different story.

No. My sister has a pitbull and all she does is lick me to death. And she was a rescue pup too. Good owners = good dogs

Statistics COME from research. What school did you go to?

They come from research but you need analysis to attach any meaning to statistics.  Did you not learn this in your stats class?
