And yeah. NYU in that situation would have been expensive af...

The school I got into is I think somewhat comparable, but trades off International reputation for perhaps not being "super" known in the US. However, I think the loan might be in USD...(if I take one that is)

I have a lot of pressure from a few sources saying I *should* just go ahead with it, and maybe even apply to American top schools (the funding for which would be a nightmare, even bigger one than this for sure) mostly on the prestige front. It's annoying, because I know better than to fall in this "trap", but still....

It is a lot. If you're going for a PhD program, you should be paid. You're doing a full-time job and should minimally not have to pay tuition. So, I personally would advocate you considering taking a gap year and reapplying instead. I just don't think debt is worth it when it's so common to get funding for grad programs. If you're getting an MFA, MBA, etc., then that's a different scenario.

Thank you king :jonny5: the way you always come through.

10 programs sounds extremely time-intensive and, as you noted, expensive. From what I've heard, it's not uncommon to spend upwards of $2,000 on application fees alone for one application cycle. Fortunately in Canada, we have a lot less options for graduate school than in the States so by design, there's a limit to the number of programs I can apply to.

I started contacting faculty in April (rookie mistake) and while some answered right away, a TON ignored me. If I could add on to the pointers you've suggested for future applicants/lurkers in the grad school thread, send out emails late August/early September. Most faculty members are either a. on vacation and won't reply to your email b. don't know if they can accept students that early on (they usually find out in the Fall).

Just as an aside, are the GREs still a thing in the U.S.? I know it's hard to generalize, but in Canada most schools have waived them. People couldn't take the GREs because of COVID in 2020 so they were "temporarily" suspended but have since been waive completely (though there are exceptions). Did you have to take the GREs? I've heard horror stories but you're also a brain so you probably killed it :deadbanana4:

Ahh, that's right you're from Canada. You definitely have fewer schools, but you have some great options. University of Toronto, McGill, etc. are all fantastic schools. You're spot on with when to send emails to faculty. Wait till the fall. I would also recommend chatting with faculty you already know from the past about whether they know someone looking to hire a PhD student for some research. That's something that I didn't understand the gravity of too much of until I was halfway through my PhD, but that's a very helpful resource as well.

The GRE exists, but it's starting to get phased out. People generally don't care about it. Some programs might require you take the GRE subject test for your field (e.g., the physics subject test for applying to a physics PhD program). But a GRE without a subject test is getting increasingly phased out from my understanding.

Well, my grad school journey starts on Sunday evening where all the MFAs in my program will be meeting for the first time. I'd be lying if I said I was excited. I really wish I was in a better head space, alas what can you do? Trying to remain as positive as possible!

I haven't so I'm a little nervous :dancehall: I just don't know what to expect. The intervention itself isn't new but it's been tested with mostly white families so we've adapted it to see whether it can also benefit black families. It's not group based which means it's going to be a ton of work to schedule everyone. The good thing is my advisor is a clinical neuropsychologist who will recruit some of her PhD students to help out.

I'd love to hear about your work too! What are you studying?

That sounds like interesting and impactful work. It sounds like an important program, and I’d definitely like to hear more about it! It’s definitely nerve wracking to do that kind of client work when not used to working with clients, and imposter syndrome is a thing, but truly, practicing and continuously doing the work is what helps the most. You’re going to feel very different from the start of the program to the end of the program. I fully believe you’ll be able to get to where you want to be!

My masters has been in social work (which I’ve been doing part time), but I was working directly with clients in the mental health field before deciding exactly what I wanted to do. I worked three and a half years in psychiatric residential rehabilitation, worked a few months doing crisis work (I was the person being dispatched to crisis situations after people called into the crisis hotlines to deal with the crisis situation directly), I had a placement in treatment foster care for 9 months during my masters where I also lead some virtual recreational groups for people who have autism, IDD, and Down syndrome (my brother has IDD, so this was more natural for me), and my last placement has been assessing and counseling survivors of domestic violence and SA. This was the place that offered me a job post-graduate program and pre-licensure (which I hope to get within a few months). That was a lot, but sometimes I forgot to what happened to me the last four years. It has been a journey.

Congratulations! I’m sorry you’re not feeling in the best head space or excited. Maybe the chance to meet like-minded individuals will help? A certain solidarity. Let us know how it goes! :hughard:

Thank you! I'm already starting to feel a twinge of excitement, I think as soon as I get there and fully immerse myself into the program I'll be in a much better headspace.

It was amazing, thank you for asking!! Everyone in my program is incredibly supportive, driven, and talented. Finally feel invigorated and impassioned to do the work thanks to the atmosphere established during this residency period

Awesome! I’m glad you had such a good time and got to meet likeminded people! Hopefully the vibes stay when you really get into your courses. :alexz3:

I had an admission interview today and I think it went very well. It's my top choice so hopefully they liked me too.

I will be starting my Masters in Professional Accounting in two months, and I am nervous!

It is technically a Master's Degree but will be course based and only for two spring/summer terms as it is an alternative route to getting the CPA designation here in Canada. But it will be intense as they are compressing the regular route that is usually taken for almost two years :cries:

I tried reviewing my undergraduate notes but was too lazy to do it. I regret taking a year off after finishing my bachelor's degree because now I feel unprepared and already forgotten many of the technical stuff :weeps:

Pray for me :cries2:

Officially halfway done with my degree as of last week :jonnycat:

That sounds like it’ll be hard to be compressed. My courses weren’t technical based but most of my classes were 14 week courses condensed into 7 week courses. It’s a lot workload wise, but you’ll get used to it once you figure out the general pace of the classes. You got this! Good luck!

Two summers now, but big payoff to be a CPA it sounds like! I bet you’ll be really happy with yourself once those summers are over. :alexz3:

It will! CPA plus a Master’s Degree would really be a nice way to end my schooling :weeps:

EDIT: I might decide to get another master’s degree and/or a doctor’s degree afterwards if I will still have the drive  ̶o̶r̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶m̶o̶n̶e̶y̶ lol

I’m definitely in the same boat regarding possibly wanting another degree in the future but money.

Aw, I’m sorry! It feels terrible to get a rejection, but I remember that you got other acceptances, so at least you know you’re going to have other options!
