A1's was slightly higher I believe since it had its record-breaking (at the time) $40m+ debut in China its 4th weekend. This past weekend's numbers (domestic and OS) for A2 were incredible. It's a crying shame Japan is doing the "stick their head in the sand" routine after being such a huge part of the first one's success.
Roberto Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 Does this have the potential to be a top 3 movie ever?
Feanor Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 14 minutes ago, Roberto said: Does this have the potential to be a top 3 movie ever? Yes, at least for a time. Titanic is being re-released in theaters this spring, so unless Avatar 2 ends up with a sizable gap over it, Titanic will probably jump back to #3, even if surpassed.

Of course that opening weekend is absolutely sensational and is probably never going to happen again but mostly everyone who wanted to see Endgame saw it the first week. Avatar and Titanic relied on repeat business and the slow spread of word of mouth. Titanic's run is probably the most legendary of all of these, it would have a slow climb on this graph if shown.
BNF91 Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 Biggest 4th weekend of all-time in Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Brazil, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Romania and the UAE. 2nd biggest 4th weekend of all-time domestically, in Italy, Australia and the UK. 3 hours ago, MrPeanut said: A1's was slightly higher I believe since it had its record-breaking (at the time) $40m+ debut in China its 4th weekend. Yeah Japan just does its own thing now lol. I think Demon Slayer Mugen Train/COVID just radically shifted the landscape there. Hollywood really just struggles there now. Except for Jurassic World and Top Gun Maverick it seems.
MrPeanut Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 Between BAFTA and ASC snubs it seems a Cameron director nom is increasingly unlikely, which is a shame. Seems like the industry is taking it for granted how difficult it was to pull this off.

X~MoviePoP Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 I actually wish avatar 2 would win best picture

Da Vinci Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Don't 3, 4 or 5 deserve the Oscar chances especially since even Cameron himself said they're the better movies Imagine wasting the nom on this entry when the other films might be better reviewed and acclaimed
BNF91 Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 (edited) All actuals in for weekend 4. $45.8M Domestic (-32%), $517.6M total $136.7M Overseas (-27%), $1.195B total $1.713B total I am seeing another great domestic weekend thanks to the MLK holiday. $30-33M 3-day and $38-41M 4-day 5th weekend. Should reach $570-575M domestic by Sunday. OS can do another $40M+ weekdays and $80-85M weekend for $1.31-1.32B by Sunday. Just on the cusp of $1.9B worldwide by end of next weekend, maybe more. I think it hits 1.9b on Monday unless international numbers overdeliver for the weekend. Sunday should be frustratingly close. Monday, 16.01.2023. - hits 1.9b Wednesday, 18.01.2023. - surpasses Spider-Man: No Way Home at #6 worldwide Sunday, 22.01.2023. - hits 2b Wednesday, 25.01.2023. - surpasses Avengers: Infinity War at #5 worldwide Friday, 27.01.2023. - surpasses Star Wars: The Force Awakens at #4 worldwide Sunday, 29.01.2023. - hits 2.1b Sunday, 05.02.2023. - hits 2.2b, surpasses Titanic at #3 worldwide Saturday, 18.02.2023. - hits 2.3b Maybe? I guess this would put the finish somewhere between 2.3b - 2.4b.
