BL King Rate Part 1: Most Popular Actors 1. You can rank up to 35 actors in the ranking in this year's rate, and I will be presenting the top 50 actors again, with 25 (or more) under Bubbling Under. Eligibility for inclusion 2. The actor must have acted in at least 1 Asian production (TV series, web series or movie) as an LGBTQIA+ character (which will be referred henceforth as "queer"), which has already has its first episode aired on a public platform as of the deadline November 30 2024. The show can be a BL, a BL-adjacent series (involving body swaps like The Shipper, Vice Versa, Cupid's Last Wish), a GL, a general queer series or a regular het series with queer supporting characters. Asia is defined broadly, and all the countries/jurisdictions listed in the Wikipedia page for "Asia" are eligible, with the exception of Egypt and Russia. 3. Take note that the actual citizenship(s) / ethnicity / sexual orientation / gender that an actor may possess in real life does not matter. That person just needs to have played a queer male character in an Asian production to be eligible. The actor also needs to be a cis-male, a trans-male or a non-binary person who was born a biological male, in real life, to be eligible. 4. The character that the actor has played need not have a same-gendered romantic partner at the end of the show/movie, nor does he need to have a romantic kiss. The actor could have also played a character who is a creep/abuser, but so long as the character is queer, the actor is also eligible. The character that the actor has played need not be a living human. The character may be a ghost, vampire, teddy bear etc, so long as the character is identified as a male. This means that the actors from Marry My Dead Body, Austin Lin and Greg Hsu, are eligible. (They have been eligible since BL King 2023.) 6. Actors who starred in "bromances" from mainland China are eligible as usual, as they are suppressed or censored BLs. However, bromances outside of mainland China will not count. This means that actors like Sky and Nani from the Thai bromance series High School Frenemy are not eligible, unless there is more explicit confirmation as the show progresses. 7. For any avoidance of doubt, the actors who played the lead 4 male characters (but not the annoying cousin) in the three version of Addicted are all eligible to be voted in. Addicted Heroin 2016 (China): Johnny Huang, Timmy Xu, Chen Wen, Lin Feng Song Stay With Me: Xu Bin, Zhang Jong Min, Wu Cheng Ze, Xian Huan Addicted Heroin 2024 (Thailand): August Vachiravit Paisarnkulwong, Mac Nattapat Nimjirawat, Jur Vasin Traiprakong (already eligible due to his role in Hit Bite Love), Newyear Nawaphat Thannamongkhonsawat (already eligible due to his role in Hit Bite Love) 8. Actors who have played characters who are questioning are also eligible. Tongtong Kitsakorn Kanogtorn, who played Jatjang in the two seasons of Bang Rak Soi 9/1, is eligible to be voted and to be inducted into the Hall of Fame (more on that later) When you vote 10. In your ranking, you must include actors from shows originating from 5 different jurisdictions in your ranking. (For the avoidance of any doubt, mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau are considered as distinct jurisdictions. The same goes for Israel/Palestine and Cyprus/Northern Cyprus.) If you fail to provide a list with actors hailing from fewer than 5 different jurisdictions, I will only take the top 28 (or 80%) of your list. Note again that the actor may have citizenship/ethnic background of a non-Asian country, but this 5 jurisdiction rule applies to the jurisdiction from which the show/movie originates. 11. No additional voting is needed for this. What I will do is to sum up the points scored by the two actors in a ship and then rank the ships based on their total score. In order to be counted as an eligible ship, at least one of the following conditions must be fulfilled. - The two actors are part of an end-game couple by the final episode. - The two actors play characters who eventually break up, but are still marketed as a couple/ship throughout the course of the show's broadcast. Examples include NeoMark from Only Friends and NatSingto from Friend Zone, who appear as a couple in the opening credits. - One of the actors play a character who passes away by the final episode, turns into a non-human form (ghost, vampire or teddy bear) or whose ultimate fate is unknown, but the two actors are still marketed as a couple/ship throughout the course of the show's broadcast. Examples include History3: Make Our Days Count, The Miracle of Teddy Bear, Addicted Heroin 2016 and Stay With Me. In order for the ship to appear on the ranking, both actors must score at least 1 point each (i.e. they must each receive at least 1 mention from any voting member). Last year, since actors like Mile Phapkum, Job Thuchapon, Newwie and Tul Pakorn received zero points, ships such as MileApo, JobInn, TayNew, EarthNew and MaxTul were thus not eligible. The ship neither needs to be a long-term nor an active one. This also means that an actor may appear numerous times on the list, if he has the fortune to kiss multiple men in his career. Once again, only ships that have appeared in shows that have its first episode premiering by Nov 30 2024 will be eligible to appear on this ranking. Confirmed ships that are appearing in shows premiering after Nov 30 2024, such as JossGawin and NetJJ (potentially), will not be eligible. GreatInn and PerthSanta were not eligible last year, but they will be eligible this year. Real-life boyfriends/fiances from different ships, such as MewTul, are not eligible. Retrospectively applying this formula, I have found 57 eligible ships and ranked them from #1 to #57. (But please let me know if I have inadvertently missed one.) The #1 ships over the past 4 years are as follows: 2020: BrightWin (#1 and #2) 2021: BillkinPP (#1 and #5) 2022: OhmNanon (#1 and #2) 2023: GawinFirst (#2 and #4), the only ship to be crowned #1 more than a year after a conclusion of their show, and where neither placed #1 on the BL King rate. - In an all-Thai top 11, First tripled up in the top 10, while Gawin, Neo and Fluke Pusit doubled up in the top 10. The relatively unpopular Phuwin and Krist are dragged up into the top 10 by Neo and Gawin respectively. - Only Friends was the only show to triple up in the top 10, while My School President managed to triple up in the top 50. - BrightNonkul was the only non-GMMTV/One 31 ship in the top 10. The New Employee's Ji Yong and Hyuk was the highest placed KBL and non-Thai shop. - Despite Newwie scoring 0 points last year, Tay Tawan still appeared on the list, courtesy of his one-off ship partner Toptap in the throuple show Three Will Be Free. - Stay With Me's BinJiong was the only ship from a Chinese bromance to appear on the list. Genius1111 Posted October 31 Posted October 31 (edited) BL King Rate Part 3: Hall of Fame Induction 2023/2024 I admit I kinda messed up last year's HOF induction methodology and I had to shelve it due to a lack of response. This year, I intend to induct 12-15 actors into the HOF, or basically up to 6 actors for each of the two years using the following three-tier method. Some of these were introduced last year. Stage 1: Automatic induction due to consistent performance An actor can be automatically inducted once he meets one of the following criteria: - Has placed in the top 10 in 3 editions of the BL King rate - Has placed in the top 20 in 4 editions of the BL King rate - Has placed in the top 30 in 5 editions of the BL King rate - Has placed in the top 40 in 6 editions of the BL King rate [Not possible yet, since this year is only the 5th edition] - Has placed in the top 50 in 7 editions of the BL King rate [Not possible yet, since this year is only the 5th edition] The actor does not have to appear in the top X over consecutive years in order to be eligible for automatic induction. The only two actors who have a shot to be automatically inducted this year are - Bright from 2gether, who of course was crowned #1 back in 2020 and has been at the tail end of the top 30 in 2021, 2022 and 2023. - Mix (of EarthMix), who was runner-up in 2021, #18 in 2022 and #19 in 2023. If either of them is successful, they will get first priority to be inducted, ahead of those in stage 2 or stage 3. If they miss out on the top 20/30 this time, they will still eligible under Stage 3. (More on that later.) Stage 2: Possible induction due to dedication to BL This was introduced last year to recognize actors who have played multiple queer characters in their careers and helped to increase the visibility of the queer community. Regardless of the time since the actor started acting in a queer role, so long as the actor has at least 5 different queer characters to his acting credit, he is eligible to be nominated for a vote. In this vote, the actor needs to have at least 6 votes or 60% of all valid votes with a YES (whichever is higher) in order to be inducted. - In the instance of cameos, the actor must have appeared on screen for at least 1 full minute for that role to be considered. This means that Force's appearance at the end of Only Boo and Mix's appearance at the end of Only Friends do not count towards the necessary 5 roles. - ForceBook appearing in ViceVersa do not count as well, because they are essentially the same characters as the ones in Enchante. - Playing the same characters 3 to 4 times (like Newwie in the Kiss franchise and Win in the 2gether francise) only counts as one, so they will only be eligible under Stage 3. - If there are only 8 people voting, then I will need 6 members to say yes in order for the induction to take place. If there are 11 people voting, then the magic number of yes votes is 0.6 x 11 = 6.6 -> rounded up to 7. These are the actors that I can think of who have hit the minimum 5 role rule, and you need to include them in your votes, alongside the main ranking. If ForceBook fail to receive the necessary number of Yes votes in Stage 2, they will be ineligible for induction this year due to the restrictions outlined in Stage 3. [More on that later.] Actors in Stage 2 will be 2nd in priority for induction, ahead of those in Stage 3. Stage 3: Induction due to performance in the 2024 BL King rate and time since first BL role A minimum of 5 actors and a maximum of 12 actors will be inducted through Stage 3. The premise is simple. The highest ranking actors in BL King 2024 that will get inducted, so long as they are eligible. An actor is eligible so long as the show/movie that the actor was in premiered on or before 31 Dec 2021. If Bright and/or Mix fail to clear the top 30/20, but still appear ahead of enough eligible actors, they can still get inducted under Stage 3. If ForceBook fails to get inducted in Stage 2, they can only be inducted in the following edition because Enchante only premiered in Jan 2022. If 8 to 10 actors are inducted under Stage 1 and/or 2, then only the top 5 eligible actors will be inducted under Stage 3, to give a total of 13 - 15 inductees.
