But now I’m thinking maybe Lover actually belongs below mixtape… the five mixtape singles kinda stomp all over Lover, plus there’s Mary’s Song and TTWAS too. Hm… See I still have a soft spot for Louvre (S), The Allahcher, False God, Aftergrammy, and Daylegend that influence my opinion on the albums, but you're probably right

The immaculate discography we are spoiled with, for me 1989 is only like her sixth best album and yet it would be number 1 in pretty much every other artist’s discography Edited April 14, 2022 by WeFoundTrouble

Girl.. 1989 isn't really an album to me. There's really nothing that ties the songs together besides the genre (and even then they're all over the place). It is a mixtape or playlist of many, really solid (if a bit impersonal) pop songs. On their own, Blank Space, Style, OOTW, AYHTDWS, Wildest Dreams, This Love, IKP, and Clean are all really good songs, but they don't fit together or tell any sort of narrative, which basically every other Taylor album has managed without a problem.

Achilles. Posted April 14, 2022 Author Posted April 14, 2022 2 minutes ago, WeFoundTrouble said: The fact the songs on the album have no connecting themes whatsoever I mean, I think the album does actually have a bit of a cohesive throughline in many of the songs. A lot of 1989 has a very jaded, cynical perspective of love. The whole “it’s gonna be forever or it’s gonna go down in flames,” “i can see the end as it begins,” “i know places where we can hide” type stuff actually crops up in a lot of the songs. And that attitude makes sense considering most of the album lyrically addresses a messy on-again/off-again relationship… And of course BS and NR have a similarly cynical attitude towards celebrity, society, etc. W2NY works as an opening song because it has that forced-optimism of deliberately trying to “reset” your life by moving to a new place, but the album that follows quickly cuts through that optimism. SIO is kinda similar as well, I think; it’s a joyous rejection of the album’s cynicism, but it also has a dash of the forced-optimism found elsewhere.
