The highly anticipated musical sequel to the 2019 hit "Joker" from Warner Bros.'s movie studio delivered just $40 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend. That performance fell short of already modest industry projections that it would gross between $50 million and $60 million. Its box-office sales are a far cry from the original's nearly $100 million opening. The first installment went on to gross more than $1 billion globally. With a production budget in the $200 million range—more than three times what the original cost—"Joker: Folie à Deux" is looking like a critical and financial disappointment for Warner Bros. Discovery. That figure doesn't include the tens of millions spent on marketing. "The movie didn't land with audiences the way we wanted it to," said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.'s president of domestic distribution. A slump at the studio is yet another challenge for Warner Bros. Discovery, whose stock has been hammered in recent months due in part to a write-down on the value of its cable networks and concerns about its long-term strategy. The company's TNT Network was also unable to retain its NBA rights, a big blow to that channel. Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group enjoyed success with "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," the long–awaited sequel to the 1988 hit, but several other recent releases fell flat. The highly anticipated "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," and horror movies "The Watchers" and "Trap" all disappointed. Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Oscar for his performance in the original "Joker" film, is joined in the sequel by Lady Gaga as a groupie-turned-partner-in-crime. The studio played down the musical element of the movie in its marketing campaigns, though it is a prominent part of the film. While the first "Joker" touched a chord with male audiences, Goldstein said the sequel was a "deeper dive into mental illness" and that some of its core audience struggled to connect with Lady Gaga's character. Critics were unimpressed by "Joker: Folie à Deux." The Wall Street Journal wrote that it "amounts to waiting two hours for something to happen" and the New York Times called it "a dour, unpleasant slog." "Rare is the blockbuster movie that consciously self-destructs and tries to take its audience along," the Washington Post's review said. Market research firm CinemaScore gave "Joker: Folie à Deux," a D, the lowest grade it has given to a comic book-inspired movie. Costs for sequels are often higher than the original, in part because the cast and producers have the power to negotiate bigger pay days. The addition of Lady Gaga and the decision to shoot in Los Angeles also raised the price tag. The studio has a few movies left on its slate this year including the Clint Eastwood-directed legal drama "Juror #2" coming next month. The animated "Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" from its New Line Cinema label is scheduled for a December release. Industrywide, films released so far this year have grossed $6.44 billion domestically, according to Comscore, 11% less than the same period last year. https://www.wsj.com/business/media/200-million-joker-sequel-is-a-box-office-bust-9b92a7c0 Quotes that are specifically about gaga: "Goldstein said the sequel was a "deeper dive into mental illness" and that some of its core audience struggled to connect with Lady Gaga's character." (Maybe because the mediocre director you gave the job to was incapable of writing a decent script you fucker) "The addition of Lady Gaga and the decision to shoot in Los Angeles also raised the price tag." Almodusa Posted October 8 Posted October 8 If they can't connect with the character then maybe Todd and Scott should've actually written better, not Gar's fault 1 2
The Witch Posted October 8 Posted October 8 2 hours ago, LadyGagaChina said: Nope. It's still not available for wide pre-sale in china, but I fear it would flop hard in box-office cuz the negative reviews have already been everywhere on social media and the Chinese really hate musicals. (I predict a max of $30 million and probably be worse) What's worse, I know some liddo fan groups even cancelled local viewings due to Gar's poor screen time and negative reviews. Omg it's over. Grace Randolph was right @PMM 1
Almodusa Posted October 8 Posted October 8 Glad she got a #1 there with a solo album, Tony would be very proud 7
The Witch Posted October 8 Posted October 8 I wonder if the movie would've done better at the box office If they didn't had sent it to Venice

It's tiring. I do hope this actually pushes her to start leaking stuff on her end too if we do indeed see a major blame campaign on her by execs and stuff. Her PR team will have to start countering it at a certain point. We'll have our own Blake Lively vs director / co star type drama I guess 1
