Although role does seem like something Oscars would prefer if lands well with critics It's because the studio seems to be confident in the movie with its rollout and they're good at campaigning for best actress (see their recent winners Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain, McDormand, Colman), the director of the movie also is in general well received, she directed 'Can you ever forgive me?' which got Melissa McCarthy the BA nomination the same year of Gaga. From what I read the screentests reactions were negative for the majority because the movie is too weird but we'll see, the last two best actresses were in particular-weird movies as well, all considered it makes sense that she had this early buzz for this project.
