Marry The Gods Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 Joanne is a good album but it could have been so much better had she pushed herself further. The sequencing of the album is also all over the place. 1

The album becomes boring after MR for people who don't traditionally listen to Folk/Americana music (even though I personally appreciate gems like Sinners Prayer, Hey Girl and Angel Down). It would have been great if she added 2-3 John Wayne/DIC-style songs toward the latter half of the album. I don't know if this counts as part of the mixing, but I also wish the album was generally louder. It feels a bit subdued in some instances. 1
chosensparkles Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 mix engineers are usually involved towards the end of a record... LG7 is upon us

Both writers/producers with similar names who have worked with Gaga, but I think we've only heard of Watt being involved in new music for now.

And we're really never getting anything like BTW ever again. We were lucky to get 3 music videos for Chromatica. But LG7 does need proper legs, even if they coincide with Joker 2 idc. Right? What the hell. Joanne she was everywhere, performing every chance she could. How could anyone argue that was not a proper album campaign?

DonnieDarko Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 (edited) Joanne was needed and did fix her public image and prepared the ground for ASIB. It has some of her better songwriting and cute ideas but it was underwhelming and seems like a wasted opportunity, at least to me.Although I like the album and listen to it from time to time. LG7 is upon us I’m getting more optimistic … BUT it is too soon to tell. We don’t know what they are mixing. Since she went there two nights in row, it most likely is some type of album. It still could be the JFAD soundtrack. Supervising someone mixing a soundtrack should not interfere with the SAG strike

Totally valid critique then. One of her best live performances, John Wayne at VSFS, comes from Joanne. ARTPOP could never. 17 minutes ago, Marry The Gods said: Joanne is a good album but it could have been so much better had she pushed herself further. They had all the ingredients for a great album, but a lot of it didn’t click. Like a collab with Florence Welch should of been a career highlight, but Hey Girl is super underwhelming I still love the album, but it is all over the place 2 1

Sannie Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 (edited) I guess it just comes down to the type of music you like because the only real let down for me on Joan is Angel Down. I feel it was too shoehorned into the album, though the messaging is very nice. Probably better suited for a different occasion, but I still laugh when I think about how RedOne was somehow involved with it. It was one of the first times we got to really see Gaga tell her life story from her own perspective. Up until that point, she had kept a lot of personal things under wraps or really did not get too much into her private life, but Joan opened a book we had never gotten to read before. Almost ever song on the album tells us something about her we did not know beforehand. Even cheesy songs like Grigio Girls gives us a glimpse into her life as a traditionally basic white girl who likes to sit around with friends drinking Pinot Grigio. 2 minutes ago, Gagaqueen said: Is that Joe Germanotta behind her ? Vroom Vroom Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 It’s just so crazy that they took two vocal powerhouses who are known for using unique instrumentals and had them sing a lowkey chill song over a Bennie and the Jets rip off instrumental Like how did they miss the mark this badly with Hey Girl? 1
WildAmerican Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 I think we can ALL agree that Sinner's Prayer is EXCELLENCE 11
chosensparkles Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 Hey Girl is such a bop I still love it and it aged beautifully! 2

It is an amazing lyrical journey from start to finish. Sinner's Prayer Diamond Heart Perfect Illusion Joanne I would add MR, but I have always been irked by the repetition "giving me a million reasons" serves. Her performance version in the UK was so much better. 2

Almodusa Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 Sinner’s Prayer is a dark groove. Let THAT get a Halloween boost instead of Sour Candy
Aden Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 Joanne worked out really well for her career in the end, but if I had to go back and change things, I would have had the record go in a more singer-songwriter direction than a Folk/American direction. Something more in the vein of You and I and Speechless. She just needed to prove her genre diversity. The country essence and aesthetics we're add-ons that really weren't needed. 1 2
Album Leak Posted October 20, 2023 Posted October 20, 2023 (edited) Joanne just kind of sucks. Every year I have less and less good things to say about it while my appreciation for every other album increases. Edited October 20, 2023 by Album Leak 1 2
