You have to remember it’s been 40 years and to think the album hasn’t shipped 500k in 40 years is just… nah. It was re-released multiple times according to discogs (in 1984 and the 1990s) on CD, cassette and vinyl. I’m not sure if it was in any club like BMG either. Shipments, not just sales. I think it has sold and shipped 500k in 40 years. The Janet Jackson album is actually on the pace to become Platinum due to it's heavy streaming when all of Janet albums chart and that's most likely point to how much it sold in it's debut we are 12 years in the future from the True You book albums and songs always sells and All For You is eligible is eligible for 3x Platinum in the U.S. Hmmm...points were made on both accounts. I had no clue the debut album was reissued and I didnt account for streams. Im guessing A&M have those stats...
mjj Posted August 13, 2022 Posted August 13, 2022 I'm trying to get people irl to listen to janet. we should have a control/rn streaming party or something. its crazy how someone with such incredible success can be underrated like this.
TheGreatestX Posted August 13, 2022 Posted August 13, 2022 Was anyone a fan during the janet era? I'm wondering if the R. Kelly remix was more popular than the album version? I find it interesting that Number Ones, the Japanese Singles and Youtube all use this version.

There's no way they thought SOAG was top 10 material I feel like the album had more legs on, single-wise. COGU, China Love, and FSG would've been the perfect singles.

That remix didn't register at all at the time. It was just your average throwaway extra track on the single. I have no idea why they continue to use it other than it being shorter than the album version I guess? It sucks in the same way the Twenty Foreplay single mix is absolute ****. Just removes all the character, the groove, and turns it into generic, bland junk.

TikTok would be a huge platform to introduce Janet music especially since her voice and music is so upbeat, melodic and youthful. it doesn’t even need to be dance challenges just as background songs to any TikToks. It’s amazing to me that the Pleasure Principle chair flip never went viral. It’s crazy how she has all the elements to appeal to Gen Z: melodic, youthful, stylish, sexy, and woke but she is so underrated. Xtina is the same way. Edited August 14, 2022 by Nippy'sReceipts

I wish i knew how to make tiktoks but unfortunately i don't. I could see so many fan edits with her music too. It's unbelievable how someone so successful could be so underrated. Christina has better streams than Janet. Her streams are unbelieveable bad and it sucks because the music is so good and thematically releveant today. This song alone should have 50m+ streams. like wtf

UAC stations here still play it.
HandsomeGumDrop Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 I think cause the R. Kelly version of Any time, Any place the video really is more explicit than the original version which is not even available on her YouTube channel you'd think now R. Kelly in prison they wouldn't still use the R. Kelly version of the record.

I don't use Tik Tok, but I understand it's impact. I just feel like...at what point will her streaming stats be "good enough" for some of the fans? Tik Tok could ensure a significant bump in streams, but will we still complain if she doesn't have 20 songs over 100 million? I would contribute and participate in making content with Janet music as I've done in the past, it takes a collaborative effort and a lot of Janet fans aren't organized or willing to show their face, sing or dance on camera. So I say if folks are ACTUALLY down to do something, we need to plan and execute as opposed to just typing about it!

The things she accomplished before the digital era are hardly being duplicated now. It's a different time and while I'd love to see be appreciated and supported more, let's not dismiss what she's accomplished overall just to put this generations consumption on a pedestal. Streams might be a standard measure of success today, but tomorrow it'll be something else and she'll still be an icon. So what else is going on?
TheGreatestX Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 The 25th anniversary of The Velvet Rope is coming up. When she did the 2009 VMAs and the AMAs after Michael died, her music got a huge bump in sales but this was before the streaming era. I hope she re-releases The Velvet Rope Tour in HQ. People laughed at her for the outer space theme /fashion in Feedback but she was ahead of her time now I see all the girls like Doja Cat and Beyonce talking about alien superstar

Like I said she was so successful i would never discredit that. I just wish more people my age new janet and could appreciate her. It's just the unfairness of it all that bothers me. Its inexplicable. I have been streaming unbreakable, hbu?

Damien M Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 I'm kinda hoping she does the Superbowl next year or 2024, releases an EP and then she can retire if she wants. That would be a nice way to "come back" and wrap up an amazing career. Plus, she's been killing all her performances lately so why not? Probably won't happen though.
makeme Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 Funny article https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20220816-00/?p=106994 Also an interesting comment Quote Janet Jackson had the power to crash web servers too. Around the turn of the century, I was part of the team that managed her website. Between her, Eminem and maybe a couple others under the Interscope label, the amount of traffic they generated was mind blowing....
eli's_rhythm Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 If she doesn't come out with an album within the next year, she's retired.
Daydream Posted August 18, 2022 Posted August 18, 2022 See Janet, this is what someone who cares about their legacy looks like.
