I don't know how safe it is though, Dawn FM for example wasn't quite a roaring success despite how much it was acclaimed.

I think it was also because it was released too soon, singles from AfterHours were everywhere, there were no time to breathe and build up any expectation.

Exactly, Dawn FN was cannibalized by After Hours + the roll out was a mess + he barely promoted the era.

The same could have happened with DL3 if it had come out in 2021, early 2022.

Is dirtier, more synthpop-electropop-like than anything from FN. I would say this is a risky choice for the first single, but the bridge is :flame:
Edit: User above shared good example of the sound from NBT song (1:44 - 2:25)

Firestarter you’re getting avenged angel :jonny5:

really hope Dua doesn't go The Weekend route, I like him and his sound but it's been done, we need something fresh from her. Let alone the GP will still probably consider it "disco" enough and she might be seen as a one-trick pony :psyduck:

🤔 It sounds 80s synth all over again production wise. Mark Ronson and others have been saying it sounds completely different from FN, but let's see.

This song that was shared is a banger tho, if Houdini sounds close to it, I'll love it, I know.

Using synths doesn’t necessarily make a song dated. The Weeknd’s Dawn FM was derivative even if it was catchy and didn’t find an audience because none of the songs were singalong bangers. You can make a synth pop hit if you do it well.

I don’t think Houdini is going to be indicative of the entire sound of the era. DSN was a Nu-disco bop but the entire album had what maybe 3 disco influenced songs max? Again, Dua has already said the album is less cohesive so we are going to get a variety of styles.

Have you heard Training Season? Would you say that and Houdini sound alike/give off the album’s vibe

Completly different songs, TS is more like FN, more radio friendly (or ALTR likes to say - generic)

The entire of FN was heavily influenced by different aspects of disco.

Anyway, my anticipation is kinda dwindling if it really does sound like a standard 80s electro pop track like what has been discussed here. Dua has the opportunity to continue to shape the sonic landscape for the 2020s and using a sound popular for the last 10 years is not the way to do it.

There are too many hints to the early 00s for me to truly believe this will happen to.  Even 80s “inspired” albums like State of Mind draw more references to late 80s/early 90s Paula Abdul than the typical electro pop of that time.

I want a 2024 version of THIS from her

We haven’t heard anything so all we have is what insiders think it sounds like, no need to base any reaction in the song until we’ve heard it

I’m SO excited, a week seems so long now :jonny5: Hopefully they have some good teasers prepared

Future Nostalgia, Cool, Physical, Pretty Please, Hallucinate, Good In Bed and Boys Will Be Boys would disagree but :michael:

What is a popular song in the last 10 years that matches that? Dawn FM is a close comparison from two years ago and it bombed. After Hours was more heavy 80s synth than electro. Prior to that we had the trap sound taking over in late 10s, and mid 10s were very much tropical.

Tell me you haven’t listened to disco without telling me you haven’t listened to disco

The 80s sound has been floating around music for a while now. The Weeknd, Carly Rae, MUNA, Miley, Sia, Tove Lo have all released 80s inspired songs in the past years or so

Okay but 80s is quite a large variety of sounds. To add to that Future Nostalgia itself draws inspiration from several decades not just 80s. Don't Start Now and Levitating for example are much more 70s inspired rather than 80s.
