Kylie Minogue - “Confide In Me”

Oh, so we’re starting off with a CLASSIC. That’s good, very good. It’s the the little sister to Madge’s “Frozen” - mature, experimental, and captivating. Especially that final chorus, the strings just take you into a complete trance.

Saweetie - “My Type”

This is one of my favourite TikTok songs. I find myself singing it all the time. It’s good use of a fun, classic RnB sample too. It’s a guilty pleasure, for sure.

Mariah Carey - “Honey”

Another classic, yup yup. I didn’t like this song much when I was younger, but I’ve certainly grown to appreciate it more. It’s a highlight in one of the best musical catalogs, so that says a lot about the quality you’re serving here. Also, not relevant to my ranking, but the Gucci Tom Ford’s.. MHM. Iconic. Must be mentioned.

JoJo - “Anything”

I can’t believe people are saying they don’t like Toto’s Africa.. it’s so infectious and timeless! I think this is very good usage of a recognizable sample, so it hits the theme perfectly in that regard. The song itself is a total throwback, and still a bop today. Surprisingly don’t mind the re-recording of this either.

Leona Lewis - “Collide”

This kinda gave me a headache. Avicii a legend though, RIP. It’s just a bit too generic for my liking, and sounds like radio fonder.

FKA Twigs - “Papi Pacify”

I’m sorry, but this really doesn’t vibe with me much. It feels quite passive, and left barely any impression on me. It’s bread that needs just a bit more butter.

Missy Elliott - “One Minute Man (feat. Ludacris)”

This is cute. Made me dance a little in my bed, and felt very reminiscent of the early 2000s. The lyrics are fun and cheeky, but there’s something off-putting about hearing Ludacris rap about sex. idk why, but I see him as rapper for children lol.

Halsey - “Alone”

I’m not a huge Halsey fan, but I enjoyed this song. I like the story that it tells, and Halsey delivers it quite exceptionally. Among all the classics here, I think this holds it’s own pretty well for a more modern selection.

Beyoncé - “All Night”

I really love the storytelling and emotional waves throughout Lemonade, and this song sorta encompasses all those good things about that album. Bey’s vocals are so beautiful here, and the production is clean af.

Madonna - “Hung Up”

Why did I have to be grouped with this song?! Ahhh. What is there to say? This is probably the quintessential sample usage. It’s the perfect song in every way. The only bad thing about this choice is that it wasn’t mine.

Teyana Taylor - “Gonna Love Me”

I loved this! Like, a lot! I thought it was a really pretty, soulful song. I also enjoyed how the sample was included in the song, and thought it did a fantastic job elevating everything.
