TLC - "No Scrubs"
You bitch, this was the first song I tried to send! Probably one of my favourite songs ever; it's just sooo infectious and empowering. You can't sit still while listening to this bop, it just completely takes over. Definitely one of the most defining songs of the 90s for me, and a benchmark in RnB history.

Christina Aguilera - "Genie in a Bottle"
This, along with Britney, are probably some of the safest choices you could have made in this round. Anyway, this song has great drag lip-sync energy. It's a lot of fun to dance to, and I'm always a sucker for weaponized sexuality so points there as well. It's not the best on her album though, and I would have preferred to see "Love Will Find a Way" or "Reflection" - but still a solid choice and will probably get higher points than my suggestions lol.

Destiny’s Child - "Temptation"
I knew we'd see DC here, and I'm SO glad you went with this option. This is one of their best songs, very well-written and delivered. Listening to this actually makes me miss Beyoncé being in a girl group, those harmonies really help lift her voice. It was tracks like this that would make purchasing albums worth it, the deep-cuts just hit different back then.

Shakira - "Ciega, Sordomuda"
Ohh, this is a REALLY fun song! I feel like I just arrived at a resort in South America, and they handed me a margarita as soon as I got off the bus and there's a little band in the corner of the lobby singing this while I check-in. Good vibes, let me add this to my Liked Songs.

The Cranberries - "Zombie"
This is pretty awful. I appreciate the lyrics, but the production is so uncomfortably loud and the vocals are irritating. Not something I'd ever willingly listen to again, sorry.

Britney Spears - "(You Drive Me) Crazy"
THIS WAS MY 90s. Fully encompassed. The infectious production, the unapologetic teen-pop Britney tone, the "Making the Video" special on MTV, the performance on Sabrina (+ Melissa in the video!) Such happy, fond memories. Even if I put all the nostalgia to the side, which I won't, the song is still a bop. The bass line in the back with the synths, the COWBELL. Iconic.

Cocteau Twins - "Iceblink Luck"
Their enunciation makes Ariana seem like a linguistics major. Seriously, what the hell are these women trying to say? The production is cute though, sounds like something that would play in a Susan Sarandon chickflick. Song sounds 90s with it's structure, so you have that going for you.

Garbage - "I Think I’m Paranoid"
It's not awful, but it doesn't stand out a whole lot. I like that the guitar jumps between being melodious and being grungy, it complements the context of the lyrics quite well. The bridge is a highlight for me, the record scratching feels like a precursor to a sound that we'd end up hearing a lot from the pop-punk scene of the early 2000s. (see: Jive Jones)

Roxette - "It Must Have Been Love"
"Pretty Woman" is one of the best films of the decade, so I'll have to give you some points for the nostalgia there. The song is okay, not the best choice you could have made with Roxette. It doesn't really feel like it goes anywhere for me, it's just sort of a cycle of the same line without any serious tweaks in the levels of delivery to make it hit different. Sort of a weak entry, sorry.

Fiona Apple - "Criminal"
What I love about this song is the background of how it was made. Her label demanded a radio hit on the album, so she wrote this up in one sitting and was like, "okay can I release my album now?" A baddie. It's a decent song, but also a far cry from being the best you could have chose for Fiona. I won't penalize for that, though. I love empowering female anthems, and this hits the spot!

The Cardigans - "Lovefool"
Is this the closest the world has ever gotten to a new ABBA song since 1980? This is an absolute classic and so much fun to sing along to. The compositions are flawless, it's honestly kinda pop perfection. (site-note: I always think of Bieber's "Love Me" when I listen to this song, and I don't know if that's a good thing or not.)

Selena - "Como La Flor"
I'm sort of indifferent about this. It's a pretty song, but it doesn't captivate me much. It feels more like ambiance than anything. But I also don't speak Spanish, so many it's deeper than I'm giving it credit for.

Spice Girls - "Viva Forever"
Oh wow, out of all the Spice Girls songs.. THIS is the one you chose? I love you. This is honestly one if, if not my all-time favourite track from them. Not only do I think the Spice Girls are a great match with flamenco production styling, but the lyrics are quite stunning as well. I've also always really enjoyed how the bridge begins to lift off, but drifts back down before it can peak - a beautiful musical representation of the song's arc. Also, GERI'S LAST SONG. THE BETRYAL. THE PAIN. (the way she kinda sabotaged the single, asjkl. Bitch.)

I would like to know from @clue and @Navyofbadgals what will be your critiques if I pushed with either Smooth by Santana or Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinead O'Connor?

TLC - No Scrubs

This is really good. I don’t live in the US so I’m not really familiar with a lot of songs from that era. I first heard this song on Rupaul’s Drag Race about 2 years ago and it’s really fun!

Christina Aguilera - Genie In A Bottle

I think this song follows a very specific formula. It’s effective and enjoyable...

Destiny’s Child - Temptation

I’m sorry, I don’t like this song :/

Shakira - Ciega, Sordomuda

This is honestly a really good latin pop song. I love the mariachi influence in here

The Cranberries - Zombie

This is a classic! Love this song <3

Britney Spears - (You Drive Me) Crazy

Everything I’ve heard from this era sound very similar. I enjoy this because it reminds me of BOMT but I don’t find it very unique or outstanding

Garbage - I Think I’m Paranoid

This is my first time listening to this and I really like this chorus A LOT!

Roxette - It Must Have Been Love

I kinda don’t love this, it’s a little monotonous and too long for me :(

Fiona Apple - Criminal

I didn’t know she existed in the 90s??? This is nice but not too memorable imo

The Cardigans - Lovefool

This song always makes me want to dance <3

Selena - Como La Flor

A cumbia classic, yes! I’m not really a fan of the genre though :(

Spice Girls - Viva Forever

I don’t understand why people are hating so much on this. I mean I don’t love it and it shouldn’t be as long as it is but this is cute

Group A ~

Spoiler

TLC - No Scrubs

YES its a classic.  Very happy

Christina Aguilera - Genie in a Bottle

Good song, her best probably!

Destiny’s Child - Temptation

Guess it's fine? It's pretty repetitive and doesn't really get exciting

Shakira - Ciega,Sordomuda

This didn't age very well, really disappointing

The Cranberries - Zombie

I like it.  I didn't think I would but slay

Britney Spears - Crazy

Don't have much attachment to this.  It's serviceable but didn't stick

Cocteau Twins - Iceblink Luck

Ooh the unique choice. It's not bad, but I don't get much out of this. It's background music

Garbage - I Think I’m Paranoid

Um slay. This is great, I especially have a lot of love and nostalgia(?) for these kinds of songs rn

Roxette - It Must Have Been Love

This sounds like a song that might've been on an episode of The Goldbergs - as in its one of those songs they use in modern day media to portray the past.  Corny and didn't age well.

Fiona Apple - Criminal

I wasn't able to make it through FTBC because it was a bit too ~weird

However this is enjoyable, feels like a classic, and probably one of the better Fiona songs I've heard

The Cardigans - Lovefool

One of those songs we all know in some way (it's also been covered like 300 times)

It's cute, but not a favourite - still decent though!

Selena - Como La Flor

Pretty.  I feel like this would mean more if I had nostalgia for it.  She's an icon though

Spice Girls - Viva Forever

Please... this is a bit terrible

Group B ~

Spoiler

Selena - Dreaming of You

This is SUPER 90s sounding.  I'm not mad, but I don't adore it.  It's enjoyable

Pet Shop Boys - Being Boring

Kind of bopping.  The vocals make me scream a bit though, serving disembodied voice

Whitney Houston - I'm Your Baby Tonight

I wonder if you knew that this was my favourite Whitney Houston song :deadbanana2:

Well - its amazing. There's something about the way she sounds with a beat like this that feels so cool

TLC - Creep

YUP!!!!!!! I have to say Group B looks great, with tons of competition, but this is one of my most favourite songs of all time

The Cranberries - Dream

It's a bit "there"

Lisa Loeb - Stay (I Missed You)

laksdjfs I'm never mad at these HAC songs.  Group B is looking tough, but I like this

Aaliyah - One in a Million YouTube Link

YUP!  This is my favourite 90s song of hers - fantastic choice

Ultra Nate - Free

awful - a relic

Destiny’s Child - Bills, Bills, Bills

Yup, great choice.  Makes a lot more sense than the other DC song

Britney Spears - Sometimes

Cute, I don't think Britney's 90s material is that interesting to me

Whitney Houston - I Have Nothing

The melodrama.  This is okay but there were better choices

Spice Girls - Wannabe

More memorable than the other.  Still not a huge fan

Cher - Believe

We love this auto-tuned hit, but only for the chorus lbr
