Please take a moment to pay your respects to that traumatic event of 2011. Now then, welcome to Ewan Chaos's Best of 2020! This year has been **** in a lot of ways, BUT this has been the best year for music in like... well... ever really. For those of you who have followed my Best Ofs in the past, I started out in 2014 listing out every single artist I listened to that year in alphabetical order and highlighted a song I liked. This was due to the fact that I am INCREDIBLY indecisive in ranked lists. Last year, I decided to do a slight mix of the usual A-Z format, but with a highlight for the top 2-3 artists of each alphabet. This year I'm finally gonna challenge myself and enter my sellout era by doing ranked lists! I'm going to be highlighting the best EPs, best standalone/one-off songs, worst albums, and best albums of 2020 for you all. To clarify standalone songs, this is for random single droplets that either will not be meant for an album OR are for an album that is coming out next year (i.e. Roosevelt's album is slated for next year, so he'll have a song in the standalone section). I've been working really hard on this the past few days (I'm still working on it) and I'm really excited. Here is what I will be highlighting: Top 10 EPs of 2020 Top 25 Standalone Songs of 2020 Bottom 20 Albums of 2020 Top 50 Albums of 2020 The worst albums section is going to be FUN because I've actually never really "panned" people in my best of besides Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz in 2015 but someone thought I was saying the album was good even though I dragged her in every sentence LOL. Alongside highlighting the above best of the best, I'm also going to provide a chart containing full ranked lists of all the EPs, standalone/one-off songs, and albums I listened to this year, broken out into the following 3 charts: 21 EPs 61 Standalone Songs 229 Albums Any December releases, planned or otherwise, will not be included in any lists. However, once my Best Of is complete, I'll pop back in here and let y'all know where the December releases would likely fall on the album chart - this will be for Rico Nasty, The Avalanches, and Foxy Shazam (well probably more than that but we'll see). Because of that, they won't appear at all in the standalone songs section, just as a heads-up. I have no choice but to stan 2 Highasakite Under The Sun All for Love, The Bare Romantic This is an interesting one to have so high (teehee) up here, but these 4 songs sound like Highasakite's best songs from their 2014 album AKA their best one 3 Shygirl SIREN FREAK, TASTY Honestly, I still need more time to get into this EP but it's pretty damn flawless even from my first few listens 4 Troye Sivan IN A DREAM STUD, Easy Troye is kinda gay excellence since Bloom, no? 5 India Jordan I'm Waiting (Just 4 U) For You, Dear Nan King House BOPS baby! I actually didn't even realize some of these were samples, so I discovered some classic jams too 6 Michi Night Moves Sugarbaby, Estranged I heard the sexy Night Moves back in March and admittedly this EP is still a bit new, but this and Sugarbaby alone are so luxurious I just know I'm gonna be playing this for a while 7 Tei Shi Die 4 Ur Love Johnny, OK crazy Goodbye Happy she seems to be doing better on a new label. This is good! 8 i_o, Lights Drift Away Annihilation RIP i_o; was happy Lights did a bit of experimenting since this is quite a new sound for her 9 KIRBY We Don't Funk Apple, Penny Funky queen 10 Khruangbin, Leon Bridges Texas Sun C-Side I like this quite a bit more than Khruangbin's actual album honestly 11 Bullion We Had A Good Time Hula, O Vermona You know we had a good time, chile! 12 Orville Peck Legends Never Die (feat. Shania Twain) Kids Doesn't touch last year's album, but it's pretty cute 13 Angel Du$t Turn Off The Guitar Lil House I really liked their album last year, so still being into that made me play this a bit more 14 Mickey Guyton Black Like Me Rose I think this would be higher up if I listened to it earlier than like 3 days ago 15 Bibio Sleep On The Wing Oakmoss I only really listen to the first song but it's a pretty good EP overall 16 Clare Maguire Emilie Tokyo With You Cute, doesn't touch the 2016 album tho come on Clare I neeeeeeed more of THAT 17 Chromeo Cabin Fever Clorox Wipe Roni Got Me Stressed Out I wish I liked this more because I kinda stan Chromeo 18 Kali Uchis To Feel Alive Let's just say I'm glad that LP2 was good! 19 UMI Pretty Girl hi! This is the only song I like, I forgot the rest 20 RAT BOY TIME ON MY MIND This was the first thing I listened to in 2020! Namely because he is a RAT and it's the year of the rat - you'll see many more RATS in the album category 21 Pink Sweat$ 17 Spotify fodder. Cute voice! Really excited for her next album 4 Erika de Casier No Butterflies, No Nothing A QUEEN I really really can't wait for her next album. She's on 4AD! 5 Romy Lifetime This (slightly) unexpectedly slays, but I was hoping for a full album like she PROMISED back in April! 6 Shinichiro Yokota Space Station (feat. Little Boots) - Space Mix A really surprising collab that I really really enjoy! Earth mix is good too, just has a bit too much going on 7 SG Lewis Impact (feat. Robyn & Channel Tres) Robyn kinda makes this track, but Imma check out SG Lewis's album next year for sure! 8 Roosevelt Echoes Feels Right Can't wait for his new album next year; shaping up to be better than his second record 9 Jayda G Both Of Us Are U Down Grammy nominated queen! 10 Jade Bird Houdini Headstart This was a bit of an unexpected slay from Ms. Bird 11 San Holo Honest (feat. BROODS) One of my favorite "EDM" tracks of the year. Khruangbin, Leon Bridges - Texas Sun (Psychedelic Rock/Country Soul) This is a cute collaboration EP that I (spoiler alert) enjoy more than Khruangbin's full LP. A great listen to in the car on a sunny day. Listen to: Texas Song, C-Side 9.) KIRBY - Sis. (Neo-Soul/Funk) I do love me a funky EP! Listen to: We Don't Funk, Apple, Penny 8.) i_o, Lights - AM 444 (Progressive House/Vocal Trance) RIP i_o. I particularly love this EP because it's something new for Lights and it suits her tbh. Sometimes gets into bathhouse background music territory tho. Listen to: Drift Away, Annihilation 7.) Tei Shi - Die 4 Ur Love (Synthpop/Alternative R&B) Happy she seems to be happy not being on her label any more. This is fun, but clearly works best as a 5-track EP, not something to make into an album. Listen to: Die 4 Ur Love, Johnny, OK crazy 6.) Michi - Sugarbaby (Pop/Alternative Pop) This is a fairly new listen for me, but it's so sassy and sexy. I heard Night Moves in March and been playing it nonstop since.
