Oni Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 (edited) Hi. I'm doing this for the first time so bear with me. I'll be listing my top 69 songs as well as top 10 albums of 2020. This year was really bad in terms of albums and I'm afraid I won't even find 10 but we'll see. Lots of good singles though. It's going to be fun, or alternatively not fun at all but I wanna do this anyway. A few rules I've set for myself 1. Only two songs max per artist on the top 69 songs chart 2. EPs count as albums Edited December 7, 2020 by Oni

Ewan Chaos Posted November 30, 2020 Posted November 30, 2020 Perched, but also curious at "this year was bad for albums" um Also genuinely loving the graphics
Oni Posted December 1, 2020 Author Posted December 1, 2020 (edited) 69. Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky (Youtube | Spotify) This song surprised me with how much I like it. I've never been a fan of Miley Cyrus, and after hearing Midnight Sky, I was totally ready to jump on board. It felt natural, after all, I am a Gaga fan, and Midnight Sky with Miley's raspy vocals felt a perfect fit for me. Too bad all that excitement was shortly afterwards crushed when she released her newest album, which was a total miss for me. Midnight Sky still stands strong own it's own and it's easily one of the best pop singles released by a mainstream pop artist this year. 68. Stray Kids - Back Door (Youtube | Spotify) I wanted to add same boy group representation into my chart, and Stray Kids deserve their spot here for sure. I often have trouble getting through a lot of kpop songs' verses and pre-choruses, and it's definitely present here as well, but the chorus is so addictive. The choreo really adds to the chorus as well, not to mention the good looking lads are fun to watch, who am I kidding? It's a good song, the best boy group release this year for me, and I'm glad to have them on board on my chart. I would say Stray Kids have been bringing it this year as well. 67. KARRA - No Evil (Youtube | Spotify) Who the hell is KARRA? I do not know, I don't necessarily want to know, but this song is fun fun FUN. The first half of this chart is going to be like some random irrelevant aspiring popstars that have managed to really create some really fun pop music, and KARRA is no different. No Evil has pretty fun lyrics and the beat goes off hard. Don't have much more to say about the song, it's just a good pop song and I'm going to be saying that a lot during the first half of this chart so get used to it! 66. MishCatt - Goofy (Youtube | Spotify) Continuing on from KARRA, here's another irrelevant pop girl that hasn't blown up yet releasing a great banging pop song. I will have to say the lyrics are not my favorite, but my god does that aggressive '' I GET GOODY EVERYTIME I HEAR YOU SAY MY NAME UUUWWAAH!! '' get me every, single, TIME! How can you not love it? Definitely have listened to this song a lot this year, and it's quite hard to skip when it comes on shuffle. 65. Royal & The Serpent - Choke (Youtube | Spotify) I've been watching Royal & The Serpent for a while now and I have to say she has been very, very consistent. And in this context, that's a pretty okay thing. Choke is probably one of her best songs, and definitely her best release in 2020. What an interesting, nice little bop, emphasis on LITTLE though. It feels like when newer artists try making it big, they just release a bunch of songs under three minutes hoping one of them becomes a streaming hit, and I don't like that. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned though. Still, Choke is a really great song and it feels very modern. 10. SINI YASEMIN - Minäkuva (Spotify | Apple Music) The singles were amazing and one of them is definitely included in the top 69 songs, but the overall album didn't end up being as clean and modern as I had hoped. It wasn't bad by any means, but based on the singles that were released, I was expecting a real banger of an album. Sini's last album, Nimeä Mut Uudestaan, that was released last year felt much more cohesive and it had way more to offer. Still, the album offers some great tunes and after listening to it a few times over, it's definitely a good pop album. When I talk about one of my '' favorite '' albums from 2020 this critically, you know this year had very little to offer for me lol. If you are hoping to get into SINI YASEMIN, I would definitely start with her debut album. It is almost flawless. Minäkuva is a nice addition to SINI's discography, but it doesn't reach the highs of her debut, but is certainly a step forward towards cementing herself as a force to be reckon with inside the Finnish pop music scene. I was stumped after 8 albums, and most of them are EPs to boot And thank you, I spent a lot of time on these incredible graphics!

dreamofyou Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 midnight sky legend, also i love the graphics omg i'm surprised you didn't like plastic hearts, especially with night crawling & wtf do i know as they're better kinda similar
Blue Rose Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 Only know Midnight Sky so far and that is an absolute bop

I can see where she was going with her sound, but only managed to really do that well in Midnight Sky and maybe Gimme What I Want. Also the second half of the album is... well let's just say she should've released an EP instead 2 hours ago, Blue Rose said: Only know Midnight Sky so far and that is an absolute bop Yes, it is! A lot of my list will probably be pretty unknown to most users, but half the fun of making the list is basically recommending people things to listen based on your own taste lul.
K$Ellie Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 Stray Kids are like the worst thing to ever happen to music BUT... I don't mind Back Door and Midnight Sky is a cute bop

Oni Posted December 2, 2020 Author Posted December 2, 2020 64. Noga Erez - VIEWS (feat. Reo Cragun & ROUSSO) (Youtube | Spotify) People be stanning some really talentless hacks, and don't have the time of day to get into Noga Erez, and that's a huge mistake. Correctify that now! Jk, but seriously, I thought this was an incredibly fun track, and the video is so simple, but so effective. Noga Erez keeps mystifying and entertaining me to no end, and one can't help but wonder, when is she going to blow up for real? I hope a new album is in the works, I just know it's going to be AOTY material! VIEWS is such a flavorful combo of sounds and it fits right into the kind of music that is popular now while not being the same old same old. 63. Ruusut - Avaimet avaa ovii (Youtube | Spotify) How do I describe Ruusut? It's eclectic electronic pop music, often so eclectic that it lacks direction, which makes their albums hard to enjoy fully. But they always have a song or two in their album that really speak to me. Avaimet avaa ovii happens to be one of them. I would say the song is basically '' what is this?! I like it though! '' personified. I've always enjoyed a more experimental electronic touch in pop music, this song is no exception. The lyrics are quite strange and cryptic, and that really adds to the songs atmosphere. 62. NIKI - Selene (Youtube | Spotify) 80s influences, namely disco and funk, are everyhwere these days. I think NIKi did a good job emulating those funky beats of the 80s. The song is so well-produced and clean, so smooth and effortless. Everything works so well, the vocals, melodies, instrumentals. You should definitely check this one out if you enjoy the current landscape of 80s disco and funk inspired pop. 61. Centimillimental (センチミリメンタル) - 僕らだけの主題歌 (Youtube | Spotify) In terms of Japanese music, I'm often more into songs than straight up albums, and my knowledge of artists is really bad, I'm not really a big fan of anyone. Thus my knowledge of who or what Centimillimental is is... non-existent. But this song definitely deserves a spot on my list. What Japan does better than any other country in the world, is the combination of piano, strings and pop rock music. This song is no exception. The amount of layers in the song just really makes me overwhelmed, but in a very good way. It's also neat that the song was part of a shounen ai movie's OST. Japan really does soundtracks well as well. 60. Lucky Kilimanjaro - SAUNA SONG (Youtube | Spotify) We shall move on to the next Japanese song on the list. Lucky Kilimanjaro is definitely a new artist find for me, and I've been quite impressed with everything they have put out recently. I really want to dwell deeper into their discography, but this b-side song, called SAUNA SONG, was an instant click for me. It's actually a cover of DISH//'s song, and both Lucky Kilimanjaro's cover and the original are great. Lucky Kilimanjaro has the slight edge for me because I like the vocals more and it feels a bit more ethereal than a straight up pop song. Regardless, an amazing song, and I'm very interested in what Lucky Kilimanjaro has to offer in the future. 59. Purity Ring - Better Off Alone (Youtube | Spotify) Alice Deejay's Better Off Alone is an iconic dance song. There's no debating that, so a cover of it in 2020? I was extremely skeptical, like this could go haywire real quick. But what do you know, Purity Ring really managed to pull it off and put a fresh coat of paint on this dance classic. Honestly, I enjoy it more than the original, they did that good of a job. Purity Ring has my permission to cover more dance classics. 58. SHY Martin - Nobody Likes Moving On (Youtube | Spotify) I feel like I shouldn't be liking this song, because it definitely feels more of a song that'd appeal to the Tik Tok generation, but here we are nevertheless. The chorus, that genius, infectious catchy earworm of a chorus, is just too good to resist. Other than that it is a pretty basic song with pretty basic lyrics, but a good chorus can often invalidate all rest. I just love that chorus, man, and it really, really is enough to put it above a lot of the other songs I've listed already. I'm not apologizing for that, nope. 57. Vilma Alina - Rikollinen (Youtube | Spotify) Vilma Alina remains one of the best pop musicians in Finland. She doesn't always get it right, I can admit that, but boy when she gets it right, she gets it REAL right. One of the best parts about the song is how well it tells it's story of infidelity in it's lyrics, and the instrumental kind of really fits into all that. I love how the chorus always ends in this more stripped back moment. Definitely looking forward to what Vilma has in store for her next album. 56. MOMOLAND - Ready Or Not (Youtube | Spotify) MOMOLAND has yet to disappoint me with their singles. Each and every one of them have been so much fun. And yes, that includes I'm So Hot and Thumbs Up. Ready Or Not is great, and I love that wacky beat drop in the chorus. That really makes the whole song for me. Maybe people are tired of beat drops, but I'm not. MOMOLAND has perfected the fun careless silly pop sound and Ready Or Not is another testament to that. I don't really seek anything else from k-pop idol groups than fun songs to bop to, and MOMOLAND always delivers on that front. 55. EVERGLOW - LA DI DA (Youtube | Spotify) I have to admit, I was only partially feeling this song when it was released, and I still have my gripes with it. I don't like the start of the second chorus and the vocal parts of the bridge are not good at all. Despite all that though, the verses otherwise sound magical and the chorus is ear candy. Definitely the second best (but which is the best?! you shall see during the next update!) k-pop idol group song of the year for me, regardless of the few things that annoy me. EVERGLOW really brought it with this one, good for them! 9. Pihjala - Kirjoitettu tähtiin (Spotify | Apple Music) Like album #10 on the list, this album had AMAZING singles, but the overall album otherwise is just decent pop album. The highs on this album are amazing though, and that's why it deserves a spot on the best albums of 2020 list. I'm not yet convinced that I should become a fan of Pihlaja, but for a debut album with some amazing highs, I'm most definitely keeping an eye out for her future endeavors. I just hope she can match the great highs on this album, because they truly are magnificent. Kirjoitettu tähtiin doesn't reinvent the wheel, no, but it's a pop album worth a listen, and some songs will stick with me for a long time. I will surely talk about those later as the top 69 songs list progresses.
Into The Void Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 I like Shy Martin but not sure if I've heard that song.
K$Ellie Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Selena an absolute STUNNER, the production is soooo pretty Love La Di Da as well, as for Momoland... haven't used them since Baam
