Comments: Immediately, “Make It Go Away” was the most solid pick for me. I took points away from “Put on Your Mask” for being lazy imo. “Fever” and “Take My Breath Away” both felt weird since they’re about love and ecstasy and the emoji looks like it’s someone in pain. “Cough Syrup” made no sense to me.

Take My Breath Away made me laugh so hard. These were all pretty good. Sheryl’s song was a cool take and Gloria’s song was made for this. Fever and Cough Syrup were both good but happened to be my least favorites of the bunch.

Comments: Well, Dr. Estefan didn’t lie! I’m kind of offended you submitted a Beyoncé cover rather than the Peggy Lee original, but “Fever” is a good fit. Don’t hold anyone tight during this pandemic! “Make It Go Away” is lovely, though it doesn’t resonate as much if you don’t know the inspiration for the song. “Cough Syrup” and “Take My Breath Away” are both good jokes, but the connection isn’t there much beyond the title.

Comments: I love Landslide, it’s one of my favorite songs of all time. Ain’t No Mountain is pretty up there for me too. I went back and forth with Usher and Miley because both felt like a nice 3 for me, but the last one was always gonna be dead last when going up against these four.

Comments: Landslide was the first song I thought of as well as Ain’t No Mountain. The Climb fits very well lyrically. Moving Mountains is great as well. The other song was good but just fell to the bottom in comparison to these CLASSICS. So far, everyone’s on point.

Comments: These are very strong selections across the board, so this is a tough one. I have to go with legend “Landslide” first, because she literally climbs a mountain and turns around. Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell also sing about an actual mountain. And while metaphorical, the mountains in Usher’s song are central to the theme. Then you’ve got “The Climb,” where there’s always going to be another mountain. So that just leaves poor Josh Garrels, whose track is an inspired interpretation of the theme, but simply can’t compare.

Comments: “But when your eyes say it/That’s when I know that it’s true/I feel it.” Ahhhh, my ****ing fave! Brilliant album track, brilliant pick. “Every Breath You Take” has exactly the creepy Big Brother is watching vibe that the emoji suggests. “Oblivion” is the other side of the coin — the paranoia of a woman who fears being stalked and assaulted. “I Saw It” has at least an obvious connection in the title, which is more than I can say for the Tame Impala track.

Comments: These are all pretty on the nose, so I have to go with the song that bases its entire premise around the emoji. I was going to complain that there are no dice involved in roulette! But Katy mentions them repeatedly anyway, so I guess that’s her problem, not yours. Bless you for making me listen to a Witness album track for the first time since 2017. As for the rest, Las Vegas didn’t feel quite as thematically apt as gambling, man — though I gave Elvis some bonus points for specifically mentioning rolling dice, which Katy didn’t do. Too bad, because “Waking Up In Vegas” is still one of her very best moments!

Comments: Culturally, rats symbolize betrayal, and that seems to be where most of you went with this emoji. Kelly Price really dragged that cheating ho for filth on “Friend of Mine” and I respect that. “Beautiful Liar” follows in the same vein. The Ratatouille song made me cackle. Sure, why not? When it comes to man-eating beasts, a rat is certainly not the first — or twentieth — animal I think of. “Maneater” honestly might have worked better with the eye emoji for me. “Look What You Made Me Do” was unfortunately a bad choice. Sorry, it’s canonically a snake song, and as Sue Hawk once said, Mother Nature intended for the snake to eat the rat in the end. Not this time.
