rl231 Posted July 11, 2020 Author Posted July 11, 2020 @supaspaz Spoiler Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby Those harmonies are clutch. They help give the bridge a nicely different vibe from the rest of the song. Mariah tries to take it somewhere with that final glory note, but the next chorus doesn’t rise to meet it and the climax sort of sputters out without fully hitting. Mary J. Blige - Family Affair “Doesn’t matter if you’re white or black. Let’s get crunk, ‘cause Mary’s baaaaack!” The genius here is the time that the bridge gets to truly build. First Mary picks up the pace, then the energy of her adlibs, and just when you think it must be over, she kicks it into overdrive, bringing it home with an exultant finish. Paramore - The Only Exception It definitely raises the stakes. Hayley’s already amping up by the end of that second chorus, but the instrumental gives you a moment to sit with it before she really lets loose. Then the way the next chorus immediately pulls back to as soft and quiet as the song gets just punctuates the emotional power of the bridge. Kesha - C'mon The bridge has an urgency that the rest of the song lacks. It builds perfectly, almost as if out of a pop songwriting playbook, so that the final choruses explode to a strong finish. MUNA - Everything I had never heard this before. It’s lovely. The bridge is certainly the emotional peak, but musically, it gets slightly lost in the rest of the song. The massive final chorus immediately blows it out of the water and provides a true climax. Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone The greatest of all time. Mariah Carey - Emotions A roller coaster of a bridge, in which we climb the epic first hill, drop into a strange sort of anti-climax, then build back up to a second, lesser peak. But the note. The NOTE! Regina Spektor - Human of the Year Easily the oddest submission this round, but it works. She turns that bridge into a hymn that reaches the heavens. Beyoncé - 6 Inch (feat. The Weeknd) This was never my favorite track from the album, but the bridge is obviously the best part. “She grinds from Monday to Friday, works from Friday to Sunday!” It’s a slow burn, hypnotizing you with its gradual build — unfortunately, not a total fit for the round. It never quite reaches that climax. Taylor Swift - Treacherous If anything, the bridge gets totally outshined by the way Taylor switches things up on the chorus that comes right after. “I-I-I, I-I-I, I-I-I” is the moment! George Michael - Careless Whisper The saxophone riff is the iconic legacy of this song, but the bridge is still fantastic. George sounds great, and he’s so spent by that “PLEASE STAY!” that he needs nearly two more minutes to glide to the finish. Rihanna - Only Girl (in the World) Sometimes simple is enough. This gets the job done. @rl231 Spoiler Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby First off, great song. Great song. Great song. A DAMN CLASSIC. Anyways, the bridge...it’s okay. It definitely takes us into the final chorus, but I’m not really sure if it elevates us into it. Mary J. Blige - Family Affair LET’S GET CRUNK CUZ MARY’S BACK, INDEED. Great one for sure, I truly loved it. We’ll see if it stacks up. Paramore - The Only Exception Ugh, just ugh. It’s truly great. It’s definitely the highlight of the song for me. Kesha - C'mon Pretty smart choice. It definitely builds the song to the final chorus, which is exactly what we asked for. Now...is it the best bridge that fits the criteria amongst the others? Remains to be seen. MUNA - Everything Never heard this song before, and it was just really, really good. I’m honestly dead ass impressed at the bridge and the build up, damn, you did that. Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone The fact that I thought this was submitted before...well, I was wrong. Anyways, it’s perfect, no other words necessary. Mariah Carey - Emotions My eyes widened at the damn WHISTLE. Yes, sir. Yes. Regina Spektor - Human of the Year This was very pretty, and I loved the build with the piano and violins in the background. Beyoncé - 6 Inch (feat. The Weeknd) Amazing song, one of the highlights from the album for me. I’m not really sure if it elevated the song though, but I will say that her flow during that bridge is insane, so there’s that. Taylor Swift - Treacherous So I’ve never heard this song, but the bridge isn't bad at all. I kinda wish it didn’t really take us back down like that though, but I guess that’s trademark Taylor too. George Michael - Careless Whisper Not bad for a bridge, especially with the “PLEASE STAY” part. However, I’m not really sure if it truly elevates the song and it almost pales to the other entries. Rihanna - Only Girl (in the World) When you submitted this, I was like, “this song?” So I listened...and I still have that same reaction. The ending part with the vocals does elevate it for sure, but I’m not truly a fan of the staccato in the bridge. @Element Spoiler Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby I’ve always loved the melody of the bridge! Such a great song overall too. I think overall it has the right ingredients, but maybe not that final push to make it super super explosive. Mary J. Blige - Family Affair IDK about this one. I was kind of bored honestly. It felt like the rest of the song. Paramore - The Only Exception Very earnest and powerful bridge. I enjoyed it a lot and I definitely think it builds up to the final chorus well between the instrumental and vocal. Kesha - C'mon I actually really like this. The rest of the song is so bombastic and this tones it down a bit before bringing you back one step at a time into the main energy. That big note leading into the final chorus really hooks you in! MUNA - Everything This bridge was one that I had to listen to a few times… I am on the fence. I think it blends into the rest of the song a bit too much but it’s very strong lyrically and production-wise. The exploding instrumentation in the final chorus is so great! Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone Don’t tell me you all haven’t tried to sing those high notes! Absolutely luv. Mariah Carey - Emotions The vocalssssssss ahhh we just don’t get bridges like this anymore do we?? She really left it all out there. Regina Spektor - Human of the Year I quite liked this tbh! It was a symphonic journey and really captured your attention before the break of silence and the final chorus. Beyoncé - 6 Inch (feat. The Weeknd) This is a very sleek bridge and I love the lyrics. It doesn’t necessarily GO anywhere -- that’s the problem. It’s enjoyable enough but there are definitely stronger entries this round. Taylor Swift - Treacherous This just felt very simple and ineffective to me. It had a nice melody but it didn’t really add anything special to the song… no elevation. George Michael - Careless Whisper It’s solid, but it also kind of feels like a separate verse, not necessarily a bridge? I don’t really feel like we built up to a climax here. Rihanna - Only Girl (in the World) There’s really no climax here. It feels as if we’re building to something but it doesn’t quite arrive. Is it an enjoyable section of the song? Definitely! But I don’t think it hits the requirement as well as some other submissions do.

rl231 Posted July 11, 2020 Author Posted July 11, 2020 @bowdown Spoiler Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby ICON Mariah did what she had to do on this song, which was to create one of the most classic, quintessential 90s hits. It’s one of my favourite songs of hers, and one of my favourite songs from that decade. While it is a masterpiece from start to finish, I’ve never really thought that the bridge was a standout portion of the song - if anything, I think the final chorus is what really encapsulates the song. While the bridge does bring us there, I don’t find it quite elevates it entirely. Overall, solid choice, though. Mary J. Blige - Family Affair This is an excellent example of a great bridge - it’s extended and slowly builds, bar after bar, until it culminates with the triumphant “MARY’S BACK!” Queen of danceries, hateration, and percolating. Paramore - The Only Exception Great choice! The passion in her voice is really evident in her voice during the bridge, and I love how she switches to a belt from an otherwise very soft tone used throughout the rest of the song. Kesha - C'mon This was good for me - definitely builds as she chants. I’m not entirely snatched though…. MUNA - Everything I only wish the bridge was longer and had one more additional refrain before returning back to the chorus - I wasn’t familiar with this song before, but it was quite enjoyable. Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone QUEEN OF BEING FAT AND QUEEN OF ICONIC BRIDGES Mariah Carey - Emotions BITCH! Mariah’s whistle note at the end of the bridge is definitely one of the most iconic parts of the song and of her discography PERIODT. That combined with the choral harmonies in the background truly snatch the **** out of me. Regina Spektor - Human of the Year What is dis hunni….I was honestly quite bored at the beginning of the bridge, but it definitely took me on a ride. I’m not sure I enjoyed the ride though….. Beyoncé - 6 Inch (feat. The Weeknd) Frankly I was struggling to remember what part of the song was the bridge before listening. Upon listening, I definitely enjoyed it but I don’t really find it elevates the song - it’s quite distinct and doesn’t really fit in the progression. Taylor Swift - Treacherous Miss Swift is truly the queen of bridges, but frankly this is not the tea…. I don’t find the bridge adds a whole lot of energy to the song. I don’t think it’s really quite that memorable or the most poignant part of the song. George Michael - Careless Whisper Risky choice, because the chorus is truly so iconic so it’s hard to argue that the bridge really stands out at all. We’ll see if it pays of…... Rihanna - Only Girl (in the World) I feel like there are better Rihanna options out there - frankly the bridge is one of the least enjoyable parts of the song for me personally, but I think it still fits the criteria well enough. I’m not bopping, but at least this isn’t flopping! @Fruity Spoiler Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby It’s a cute entry. It builds pretty well and the ad libs + key change are cute as the final chorus approaches. I’m not sure if I’ll really remember the bridge that much, however. It doesn’t make a huge impact. Mary J. Blige - Family Affair Yep this is kinda the best part of the song, and it feels substantial and built out relative to other bridges which can sometimes seem rushed or lacking in content. This truly ADDS to the song. While other entries build a little more, she does kinda go off toward the end, so yeh, it ticks the boxes. Paramore - The Only Exception This is pretty intense and does exactly the job it needed to. Kesha - C'mon The repeated line works well and I love how the production adds layers with each repetition! MUNA - Everything I can see the appeal of this bridge. I liked it, but it kinda got lost between the choruses for me, and if anything it repeatedly cascades downwards in intensity (rather than upwards). It’s beautiful songwriting, but not exactly what I wanted from this challenge. At the very end I guess it does provide a quick moment of build, but that pretty much belongs to the final chorus which is the memorable section for me. Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone Very solid entry. Mariah Carey - Emotions A lot happened here!! Whew - the bridge is most certainly an event in itself, and is pretty much the main incidence of the entire song, making it extremely memorable. Structurally, it’s very unconventional. It doesn’t exactly build into the final chorus, but the climax was contained within, so! I’ll allow it. Regina Spektor - Human of the Year It was honestly kind of risky to send this, but it really paid off for me. That was a beautiful journey she took us on. The subtle tempo increase was masterful, and by the end, the climax she led us to was in fact silence. I love this choice. Beyoncé - 6 Inch (feat. The Weeknd) Amazing section of the song. It didn’t climax too much, in fact it was more like a plateau so I can’t tick that box, but it is fantastic nevertheless. Taylor Swift - Treacherous This song and bridge is really such typical Swiftian songwriting. It’s beautiful! But also potentially not exactly what was asked for, in that it doesn’t dominate the song in any dramatic fashion, and it did kind of recoil before the end. George Michael - Careless Whisper Melodically this is fantastic, and I would disagree with some of the judges and say that it’s a memorable part of the song for me. But I would say that the bridge kinda starts with a big-ish note and doesn’t really head in an upward direction from there. Since it’s a pretty smooth and chill song, there definitely wasn’t a lot of intensity or tension created (that wasn’t really the aim), making it a slightly weaker choice compared to some other entries. Rihanna - Only Girl (in the World) This is an interesting choice! It’s pretty simple (melodically, lyrically, structurally) and not particularly memorable, but in a clever way it essentially provides *relief* from the intensity of the previous soaring chorus, and prepares us for the next one - with a cute build! Which is kind of exactly what was asked, so while this bridge is not a big event in itself, it definitely serves a purpose. @touya kinomoto Spoiler Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby We’re off to a great start. The layers, the adlibs, the key change. I wish she could have gone higher with the last note but it transitions well into the final chorus. It’s a great bridge. Mary J. Blige - Family Affair I am today years-old when I found out that that part is considered as the bridge of the song. A middle-8 appearing even before the halfway part of the song? I haven’t seen/heard such thing. But I agree with most of the people that this is the best part of this classic. The way it builds up over 40 seconds to prepare for the final chorus(es) is just exquisite. Paramore - The Only Exception Oh, perry. You can feel how earnest she is here. I like how it is totally different it is emotion-wise compared to the rest of the song. Kesha - C'mon It’s textbook bridge and a great one at that tbh. I like how the production starts kinda muted and then it builds up every line leading to the final chorus. It does its job of setting up the final chorus very well. MUNA - Everything Idk about this one. The separation of the bridge from the other parts of the song is too muddied. Also the production is kinda similar. Also it doesn’t set up to the final chorus as well as the other songs. Kelly Clarkson - Since U Been Gone Oh perry. Excellent choice. 10s 10s 10s across the board in all aspects. Mariah Carey - Emotions Oh perry. I thought Kelly had the top spot in my bag. The way Miss Mimi just snatched it. Regina Spektor - Human of the Year Okay, this one took a couple of listens to me and I like this tbh. The way it builds up and then ends up in silence. Oh wow, what a twist. Beyoncé - 6 Inch (feat. The Weeknd) I agree with the rest. It is a pretty bridge but it does nothing to elevate the song nor it sets up the final chorus as well as the others. It actually does nothing imho. Taylor Swift - Treacherous Textbook Taylor Swift bridge. Beautifully written with excellent production. However, it kinda misses the assignment of elevating the song. George Michael - Careless Whisper This is not working for me in terms of what the challenge is asking. It’s kinda one-note. Like it started big enough that the changes and the buildup to the final chorus is not that much noteworthy. Rihanna - Only Girl (in the World) I’m pretty sure Rih has better songs that would fit this challenge better. It does build up but it ends up nowhere. INDIVIDUAL RESULTS NEXT!!!
