Queen Conchita Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 SAVE • Sia (insane detail) • Ariana (I felt the passion of the song, the album and Ariana in your post) OFF • Hilary Duff (You didn't mention anything about the song drawing you into the album) • The Weeknd (I don't feel like you linked it to the album) • Samantha Jade (I actually loved your essay but you didn't mention why the song made you want to check out the rest of the album)

I wanted my last sentence to sort of wrap up everything I said nicely to get the point across. But it's fine.
Rihlana Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 So sorry @Pedro I'll do this ASAP! I'm just doing some things for the Power 100.

Pedro Posted February 20, 2017 Author Posted February 20, 2017 (edited) ATRL's original game "Choose The Album, Then a Song" is back for its anticipated ninth season on its original concept. Welcome to the first elimination show of Choose The Album, Then a Song 9. During the first round you were put into test to, basically, collect points and test the waters but this time... There will be an elimination. One of you will be leaving the competition after we reunite all the results, therefore let me wish you good luck! As for now, I'd like you to give a big round of applauses to our judging panel who are now about to take their seats! Pedro Lazuli Kavish Inner Insanity Looking good, girls! Now that you've taken your position, let's review the voting rules along with the respective updates, shall we? 1. The voting process is dived into two parts: the public vote and the judges votes; Each of these parts account for 50% of the results. 2. Each contestant that didn't cast a vote will be deducted 30% of his/her final result; The 30% discount can be translated into less 5 points. 3. The judges have rated each entry from 1 to 10; All of the judges votes are then summed and we get to an average. 4. Your results are cumulative from the points you receive eachround; 5. During the voting process there may be ties. Find below the rules to break them: 5.1. If there is a tie wiithin the public vote, the entry with the best result within the judges votes gets ahead; 5.2. If there is a tie within the judges votes, the entry with the best result within the public vote gets ahead; 5.3. If there is a tie within the final results, the entry with the best result within the judges vote gets ahead. 6. The points distribution have changed in order to decrease expected events. 1st Place: 17 Points | 2nd Place: 15 Points | 3rd Place: 13 Points | 4th Place: 12 Points | (...) 15th Place: 1 Point. Before kicking things off... Spoiler As you know @Queen Conchita arrived one round later to the game and was so kind to replace one of the quiters. This round, the album "Conchita" by Conchita Wurst was immune and therefore can't be eliminated but this didn't change the fact Queen Conchita arrived one round later. After we meet the final results, Queen Conchita will receive 50% plus of the album's final result (if "Conchita" gets 20 points, it will receive 10 extra points). Spoiler It's time to get into detail. During the first round, you were asked to send in the song that best shaped your album... But that doesn't mean that the song chosen was the one that got you obsessed with this album up to the point you decided to play a game like this with it. This time, you are supposed to send in that song that chained you into it. There's a lot of reasons why a song persuades you into an entire album: the rhythm, the catchy choruses, the meaningful lyrics, the usage of specific instruments or even the artist who is singing it! That's the purpose of this second round. Please send in the song that chained you into its rhythm and thefore into your album's and explain why that song was so special (p.e. its instrumental, lyrics, vocals...) for that matter in no more than 200 words. Spoiler 1. shelven: Sia - "This Is Acting": 60 Points. 2. Vulnicura: Robyn - "Body Talk": 53 Points. 3. sumthintoxic82: Kelly Clarkson - "Piece By Piece": 50 Points. 4. MusicLoverDude: Samantha Jade - "Nine": 28 Points. 11. Speezy: The Weeknd - "Starboy": 27 Points. 12. ReachOut: Hilary Duff - "Breathe In. Breathe Out.": 22 Points.13. Sempiternal: Asking Alexandria - "The Black": 12 Points. [Eliminated - R2] 14. Verge of Obscene: Britney Spears - "Glory": 14 Points. [Quit - R1] 15. Alena: Melanie Martinez - "Cry Baby": 5 Points. [Quit - R1] This time is for real and, unfortunately, there is no space for doubts. Sempiternal (a.k.a. M A R N) is leaving the competition along with the album she chose to play with "The Black" by Asking Alexandria. It was an enormous pleasure having you around and I really hope we get to see more of you in the future and also continue to see you around. There is always room for improvement so I hope you take all the critiques positively and become better and better. Thank You, Sempiternal. Edited February 20, 2017 by Pedro
Pedro Posted February 20, 2017 Author Posted February 20, 2017 Find below the judges' comments to each entry. Spoiler PEDRO 1. shelven: Sia - "This Is Acting": ‘Cheap Thrills’ 10 That was absolutely fantastic and an amazing way to start the judging process! I have literally nothing to critique. I feel like you captured the essence of this round extremely well and I can totally relate to it as I prefer this more relaxed version of Sia. Good job! 2. MusicLoverDude: Samantha Jade - "Nine": 'Show Me Love' 8,33 Everything about this entry destroys (in a positive way) your previous one. I feel like you captured the essence of the round a little bit better this time and balance better the song details with Samantha’s persona and your opinion on her. My main critique which is not too relevant would be directed to the fact that you focused at 100% on the challenge theme only by the last sentence. Nonetheless and on top of all that, this song is a BOP. I would be curious to hear the album based on this as well! Her voice reminds me of Dumblonde’s Shannon Bex! 3. Rihlana: Halsey - "Badlands": 'Ghost' 8 Even though I did appreciate your essay once again, I have to admit last round’s was better. I feel like you focused too much on small details that made the reading - at some points - a bit too long and I couldn’t find exact points that made this song become so important for you as a listener. Either way, you nailed it once again and I am so excited to see what you’re yet to bring. 4. theycallmemaraj: Ariana Grande - "Dangerous Woman": 'Into You' 8,33 I appreciate your passion towards Ariana and her vocals, I think it came off as cute. Just like last round, I believe you focused a bit too much on the same details (“layers”) but I adored how you mentioned your love for the “back vocals” throughout the song as that is one of the parts I love the most about “Into You”. I also believe it’s worth mentioning that you respected the challenge at 100% which will give you extra points. 5. sumthintoxic82: Kelly Clarkson - "Piece By Piece": 'Dance With Me' 7 What I loved the most about your essay was how easy it was to read it, feel it and relate to it but if I have to be honest, I expected more given your performance last round - where you completely nailed it! While I believe you respected the challenge and took an original approach to it, I wanted more input on how this became so special to you and therefore made you love the album. 6. ReachOut: Hilary Duff - "Breathe In. Breathe Out.": 'My Kind' 4,5 God KNOWS how I love “My Kind” so much. It has this special and passionate feeling attached to it. It’s impossible to resist it and it pains me how bad it flopped. While I loved your selection of a song and found your personal bond with it quite cute, I believe you didn’t respect the challenge at 100%. I understand you can listen to this on loop but wouldn’t that make you ignore the rest of the album? 7. M A R N ✮: Asking Alexandria - "The Black": 'I Won't Give In' 3,33 I understand the general appeal and this is, for sure, softer than the song you sent in the previous round but I am afraid you missed the main purpose of the round by focusing in the general public and forgetting about your own feelings towards it. At the end of the day, this round was about letting us know what song made you so obsessed with this album and you explained that by saying that anyone can appreciate this song due to its “general” appeal. 8. Vulnicura: Robyn - "Body Talk": 'Fembot' 8 I believe it was very smart of you to choose the opening track of the album and justify your choice with that because the first track is usually the key for the album. Either way and while I loved your song, I wanted something more personal than general. You weren’t very specific on how this song was special to you. Instead, you decided to take a more objective approach to it and made it lose some magic. 9. Queen Conchita: Conchita Wurst - "Conchita": 'Rise Like a Phoenix' 8,5 What I loved the most about your entry was how genuine it was. You truly love Conchita and “Rise Like a Phoenix” and one could tell that by reading what you said. She is indeed special and you took a very original and unique approach to it that made your essay stand out. Good job! 10. Lion: Troye Sivan - "Blue Neighbourhood": 'Talk Me Down' 7 Let me start my critique by saying that I am crazy loving your entries musically. Troye seems like such an interesting artist and I’ve been loving the songs. I can’t wait to listen more but you need to improve in some aspects. The very first one being your summary abilities, you exceeded the 200 words limit by a lot. On top of that, I believe you lost some points by focusing on the trilogy which could be left for another round. What I truly loved on your essay was the song’s characteristics that made full sense with the song presented. 11. Tymps.: Lemon Demon - "Spirit Phone": 'Touch-Tone Telephone' 8 I love the uniqueness of your album and also of your entries. They are short yet effective and respectful of the theme. I truly enjoyed the reading for this round. I only wish you’d have related it a little bit more to the album because by the end of the essay I was confused if this was, afterall, a depart from the rest of the album or not. 12. Speezy: The Weeknd - "Starboy": 'Love To Lay' 5,33 I expected a little bit more, Speezy. While you didn’t do bad there’s room for improvement. During this round you were also supposed to relate this song to the album and give us a little bit more other than simply explaining what is the song made of. On top of that, let’s try not to cross the word limit. 13. lhdang2000: Adele - "25": 'Send My Love (To Your New Lover)' 4,33 After an amazing first round, I am afraid you may have misunderstood the meaning of this round as you didn’t really respect it. You took a very general approach and made your essay look very wide and not related to you and why this song was so special. You also didn’t relate it to the album and that made you lose some points. Spoiler LAZULI 1. shelven: Sia - "This Is Acting": 'Cheap Thrills' – 8/10 Sure, I can see how because Cheap Thrills is different enough such that it makes you excited for the album. But I am kind of unconvinced as to why it’s the song that gets you into the album, because I don’t really find the reasoning why the album follows the style of Cheap Thrills, especially when you mentioned that the first few tracks are nothing like that at all. 2. MusicLoverDude: Samantha Jade - "Nine": 'Show Me Love' – 7.5/10 Your point here is that the song shows that she’s got personality, but you don’t really show how the album shows it too. I get where you’re trying to go and you made a very worthy point, but you should’ve built more on how the album shows off different facets of her personality or something, and that this song is the strongest in portraying that. 3. Rihlana: Halsey - "Badlands": 'Ghost' – 6.5/10 Everything was written wonderfully, but you focused way too much on the song. You make tons of great points, but you should’ve linked each one of them back to the album. If you explained what the Badlands experience is, it would’ve been perfect. 4. theycallmemaraj: Ariana Grande - "Dangerous Woman": 'Into You' – 10/10 The structure of the essay is spot on: you praised the characteristics of the song and mirrored it to the album. You could, however, have an even stronger or more elaborate point. But good job still! 5. sumthintoxic82: Kelly Clarkson - "Piece By Piece": 'Dance With Me' – 8/10 You make such good points about the song’s universal appeal and meaning. However, if you added in how they’re shown in the album too, it would’ve been perfect. 6. ReachOut: Hilary Duff - "Breathe In. Breathe Out.": 'My Kind' – 6.5/10 The story about how the song and hence the album is linked to your ex is cute, but it’s not quite necessary in relation to the question, sorry. You say how the song is a powerful love song and its fresh, but it lacks explanation as to why it is THE freshest love song in the entire album. 7. M A R N ✮: Asking Alexandria - "The Black": 'I Won’t Give In' – 5/10 I would say that this is less cluttered than your previous effort. I can see that you’re trying to say that this song being the most accessible one makes you get into the album, but well it needs a lot more explanation as to why you’ll get into the album like how you got into the song. 8. Vulnicura: Robyn - "Body Talk": 'Fembot' – 10/10 Saying that the first track has to be the track that “chains” people in the album felt a bit iffy to me, but I guess I was eventually convinced. Regardless, your second paragraph fulfils what the question asks, so good job! 9. Queen Conchita: Conchita Wurst - "Conchita": 'Rise Like a Phoenix' – 5/10 Mmm there was barely any mention about the album, other than the last sentence which is nothing more than just a casual link with barely any substantiation. 10. Lion: Troye Sivan - "Blue Neighbourhood": 'Talk Me Down' – 5/10 That essay was WAY over the word limit even if I deleted the quoted lyrics. Try not to quote a whole paragraph of lyrics, it is a waste of word count. You explained the song well (but it should be a lot more concise) but you failed to talk about the album. Explaining that it’s also about sexuality, love etc would’ve linked everything well. 11. Tymps.: Lemon Demon - "Spirit Phone": 'Touch-Tone Telephone' – 7.5/10 It was quite contradictory to say that the song is a departure from the album, yet it’s the song that “chained” you into the album. The last few lines picked it up a bit when you mentioned about its sound, but I think it’s still lacking in showing how the album is “fun and entertaining but also deep and complex”. 13. Speezy: The Weeknd - "Starboy": 'Love to Lay' – 5.5/10 You explained the song fine, but there was no link to the album. Furthermore, you say that you like upbeat/steady R&B songs but you go on to say that the song channels a “easy dark ballad” and then in the last paragraph you talk about how catchy it is. Sis don’t confuse me like this! 14. lhdang2000: Adele - "25": 'Send My Love (To Your New Lover)' – 6/10 So nicely written, but zero mention of the album. Such a pity. Spoiler KAVISH 9.0 | shelven: Sia - "This Is Acting": 'Cheap Thrills' You are one of the very few who really understood the challenge, and you had the best essay among this select few. Your essay perfectly portrays the anticipation of an album due to a song, and you gave solid points to validate your desire to listen to "This Is Acting" after listening to "Cheap Thrills." Just a little side advice – although I understand the context in which you used it and it worked in this situation, try not to shed a negative light on other songs of your album (unless the challenge asks for it) because you are still trying to show how your album is the best out of everyone's else and you wouldn't want to backtrack anything in a future round where you will use those songs in a positive way. 8.0 | theycallmemaraj: Ariana Grande - "Dangerous Woman": 'Into You' You are one of the very few who really understood the challenge and did what I was expecting. You successfully showed how "Into You"'s different theme makes you want to check out the album, and how the vocals and structure of the song entices you onto the rest of the record. Even though you wrote valid points, try to be more cohesive with your sentences because this felt like you wrote them separately and jumbled them together. 7.5 | Queen Conchita: Conchita Wurst - "Conchita": 'Rise Like a Phoenix' Welcome to the game. The excitement to get to know Conchita beyond "Rise Like a Phoenix" can be felt in your essay, and it was a strong factor that made you want to listen to the album. However, I think that you should have focused more on the song itself rather than the events surrounding it, and try to add more depth to your essay. 6.2 | MusicLoverDude: Samantha Jade - "Nine": 'Show Me Love' I understand what you wanted to convey with this essay, but it didn't come off the way that you wanted it to. Listening to the album because "Show Me Love" showed a side of Samantha that you wanted to see on the album is a valid point. However, the connection is weak because I don't see how the song is more special from the other similar tracks on "Nine" if she is already known for that personality. The essay felt more like a description of your favorite track as opposed to an assessment of how the song drove you to listen to the rest of the album. 6.0 | Vulnicura: Robyn - "Body Talk": 'Fembot' Nice start to your essay, but then it veers more towards how "Fembot" serves as a perfect, addictive introduction to "Body Talk" and not much about why it made you want to listen to the rest. Still, the essay was elegantly written. 5.0 | sumthintoxic82: Kelly Clarkson - "Piece By Piece": 'Dance With Me' The old and new sound of "Dance With Me" flows throughout the album and I can guess that's what makes you want to listen to the rest of the album, but you did not specifically mention it. It felt pretty vague when you wrote that you always have to finish the song, and then listen to the album – with no explanation why. The essay is more about how the song is one of your favorite from the album, but you did not build enough solid connections between them. It's nice in literature to leave some things to the reader's imagination, but in a game where each statement can earn you points, you have to be as clear and detailed as possible to get all your points across. 4.0 | Rihlana: Halsey - "Badlands": 'Ghost' Beautifully written essay, and I enjoyed this one more than Round 1's. However, you strayed away too much. The whole essay was only a description of the song, and you signed off by stating that those are the reasons why you were chained to "Badlands". But to me it felt like a very abrupt connection because you could have done that with any song from the album. Even though I can tie the links, I think that you should have centered your essay on how "Ghost" made you want to listen to "Badlands" as opposed to painting the song as a pivotal part of the album. 3.0 | Lion: Troye Sivan - "Blue Neighbourhood": 'Talk Me Down' You described the song and also mentioned that the song made you discover the album, but you made a pretty faint connection between those two instances to show how it chained you to the album. 2.0 | Tymps.: Lemon Demon - "Spirit Phone": 'Touch-Tone Telephone' Half of your essay was about how "Touch-Tone Telephone" stands out on "Spirit Phone," and the other half would fit in last round's challenge – about how the song also shapes the album. Either way, that was not what the challenge was about. Your last line was an abrupt connection, but you could have done so with any song on the album since all of them are 'fun and entertaining, but also deep and complex.' I wanted to know how this song specifically makes you want to listen to the album. 1.2 | Speezy: The Weeknd - "Starboy": 'Love To Lay' You wrote about the song and what makes you want to repeat it, but you did not write about how "Love to Lay" makes you want to listen to the album. 1.1 | lhdang2000: Adele - "25": 'Send My Love (To Your New Lover)' I think that you missed an opportunity by not mentioning the fact that "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)"'s different direction is what made you want to listen to the album. But you didn't make any connection in your essay. You wrote about why you are chained to the song, but not how the song got you chained to the album. 1.0 | ReachOut: Hilary Duff - "Breathe In. Breathe Out.": 'My Kind' You wrote about your favorite song, and not about how it makes you want to listen to the rest of the album. In fact, it seems like you only want to listen to "My Kind" because that's the song that you think of when you think of the album – and that's the opposite of what the challenge is asking for. 1.0 | M A R N ✮: Asking Alexandria - "The Black": 'I Won't Give In' You took a general approach when you should have taken a personal approach. Even then, you did not tackle the challenge. You were supposed to write about how "I Won't Give In" pushed you to listen to the album, but you wrote about how relatable the song can be to everyone. Spoiler INNER INSANITY 1. shelven - This Is Acting I actually found this song really generic and not a fit for Sia at all at first. However, I'm glad you could see it in the opposite way. You fully explained how this is the song that made you really interested in what the album had to offer and why it's so charming. Congrats. 10/10 2. MusicLoverDude - Nine You explained why the song is so captivating to you but you missed the overall mark a bit. You said you keep coming back to the album because of this song but you didn't say why you first got into it. 6/10 3. Rihlana - Badlands I think you delved a little too far into the song's description. Your conclusion and explanation for why you got interested in Badlands feels tacked on but you write very well and I think with a little fine tuning you will do very well in this game. 7/10 4. theycallmemaraj - Dangerous Woman I agree with you in that the background vocals totally make this song a standout. However, you missed tying the song's charms to how you got hooked into playing the entire album. 6/10 5. sumthintoxic82 - Piece By Piece I like your approach with this one. You said you were already a fan so checking this album out was a no-brainer but that Dance With Me is the song that keeps you replaying it. You could have mentioned other songs on the album that failed to grasp you like this one though. I think that could have helped you further show how Dance With Me is so alluring. 8/10 6. ReachOut - Breathe In. Breathe Out. I'm sure you're not too happy to have me judging for this one. ;) But in all seriousness I think you nailed why the song is so charming but you didn't quite get the part about hooking into the album as a whole. The last part of the challenge was to flesh out why that song in particular made you interested in playing the album so much. 6/10 7. M A R N ✮ - The Black Woo girl. You need to use some periods because I feel out of breath reading that as a long ass sentence. Made it harder for me to get what you're trying to say. With that said though you did explain the song's charms but you, like a few others, missed the mark on why the song made you so interested in playing the overall album. 4/10 8. Vulnicura - Body Talk First of all, I'm in love with this album. It is all kinds of slay. Second of all you nailed this challenge. As the first track on the album is really does say a lot about what the album's experience will be like and you got that. I was hooked on this track right away and you did a great job. 10/10 9. Queen Conchita - Conchita Great job explaining why this song is so captivating to you. I can totally see how someone would be lured in by it. And then you explained how this song alone made you want to play the album as a whole. Every part of the challenge was met so congrats for killing it. 10/10 10. Lion - Blue Neighborhood It is a really gorgeous song. I can definitely see why you would want to see what else he has to offer from this song alone. That said I think you went overboard on your song's explanation. The video part is great but it's a bit unnecessary for this challenge. Still, great job. 7/10 11. Tymps. - Spirit Phone This is a bit on the short side which makes it feel slightly rushed. But besides that I think you hit every part of the challenge. This song's humor and video game like sound had you hooked into seeing what a whole album like this would sound. Good job. 9/10 12. Speezy - Starboy You're right there at the point of a perfect score. Your tie into why the song made you so interested in the album is a bit lacking for what the challenge was asking for. I do really enjoy your writing and song description though and, with a bit of tuning, I can see you going very far in this game. 9/10 13. Idhang2000 - 25 Such a great description of this song. I personally don't care for it but I can totally see why people would be so interested in it. With that said, you didn't tie it into the overall album. You needed to say why it made you interested in the album and why you keep playing it over and over. 6.5/10
Vulnicura Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 n this is the Kavish I remember. thanks for the comments! My entries not being super personable is a critique I had last season so I'll try and feed more into that for next round.
Rihlana Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 Totally agree with the judges for my song. After I read the essay, I thought that I probably should have made it a little more emotional with some better linkage to the album. Thank you! And @shelven your essay was sensational. You really deserved this round

shelven Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 (edited) Thank you so much judges And also those who voted for me in the public vote, of course @Kavish, regarding your advice, I didn't mean to imply that those other songs were bad because they didn't sound new (in fact, some of them are actually highlights of the album for me), but reading my entry back, I see how it sort of came across that way So thank you for that suggestion! 5 minutes ago, Rihlana said: And @shelven your essay was sensational. You really deserved this round Thank you, this is so sweet Both your entries so far have been really strong (and like I already said, your writing style slays), so you're definitely someone I have my eye on in terms of tough competition going forward Edited February 20, 2017 by shelven
shelven Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 Also, sorry to see you go, @Sempiternal Hopefully you'll play again next season and come back stronger since you definitely seem to have the passion for the game!
