M A R C Posted December 26, 2018 Author Posted December 26, 2018 I'm about to start, once again this won't be a ranking. Everything is in random order because it's a bit difficult for me to rank so many great songs. Then again looking back at my previous Best Of's, it's kind of a shame how i can rank people for their looks but not actual songs. X X Anyways it's Dec.26th where i'm located, and i'm bored so here goes my first batch of songs.
M A R C Posted December 26, 2018 Author Posted December 26, 2018 (G)i-dle // Hann (Alone) The IT rookie girl group that’s giving their seniors a run for their money. (G)i-dle let it be known that they will be a force in the 4th generation and Hann is the song that proved that. The whistle chorus and the airy instrumental is what makes the song unique. Only took me two listens to realize it’s one of the best K-Pop songs of the year. Tinashe // No Drama Miss Tinashe has been a hit and miss for me quality wise, this time around it’s a hit with No Drama. Aside from Offset’s verse it’s a really excellent song, lyric wise and production wise. It definitely has replay value, something most of her singles lack. Jonghyun // Shinin’ The dearly departed Jonghyun’s last and final musical effort did not disappoint. With a sweet, fun, and feel good production that’s almost bitter sweet. Jonghyun proves once more that he’s one of the most talented idols in K-Pop and one of the most talented artists in general. Calvin Harris ft. Dua Lipa // One Kiss Didn’t believe Calvin would be able to match up to the magic him and Rih had, but he definitely proved me wrong when he teamed up with Dua Lipa. Dua’s vocal color is what makes the song a hit for me. Her vocals and the instrumental during the bridge is one of the best musical moments this year. En Vogue // Rocket I didn’t even know En Vogue was still active in music, I only knew of their material from the 90s/early 00s. So I was shocked to find out they put out such an amazing song so late in their career. The production matched the title perfectly, giving off a very spacey vibe. The harmonization and vocal delivery throughout the song is what garnered my attention.
M A R C Posted December 26, 2018 Author Posted December 26, 2018 Summer Walker // Girls Need Love Summer Walker is the girl to watch in 2019. Starting off with a strong debut she delivers a girl anthem with sleek production and sultry vocals. The way how Summer smoothly started the song is a highlight. I am definitely here for the new wave of R&B girls and what they have in store. GOT7 // Look Some still might not agree, but GOT7 has definitely been steady improving quality wise. Look is one of those songs that prove their improvement. Delivering a fun and memorable chorus with excellent performances to go with it makes the song a staple for me. Charli XCX // No Angel + Focus Charli provided me with the 1-2 PUNCH that I needed. No Angel being a mid-tempo bop and Focus being a death drop moment makes the dual release one of her best efforts. Ariana Grande // no tears left to cry NTLTC deserved the success Thank U, Next is currently receiving. It’s one of her best singles production wise and vocally, matter of fact it’s one of the best songs in her entire discography. If you disagree fight me. *zealia Banks // Treasure Island I must admit once again, another excellent song from Banks. I can’t knock her down with that. The instrumental before the bridge was a moment.
M A R C Posted December 26, 2018 Author Posted December 26, 2018 Red Velvet // Bad Boy As many critics stated, Bad Boy is what sets Red Velvet apart from their peers in K-Pop. Bad Boy is one of the many songs from Red Velvet that cements them at the top in quality right now. They could release pure s**t after and they’d still be on the top quality wise because of this moment. What makes this THE song of the year is the excellence from top to bottom, the delivery in the verses and the harmonization’s in the chorus, something their peers wouldn’t or couldn’t attempt is what sets Bad Boy apart from other K-Pop songs this year. Panned Boy indeed. Yubin // Lady Anytime Yubin releases it makes me miss the Wonder Girls. But she definitely keeps the WG aesthetic alive with the 80s retro production and visuals. Unfortunately Korea is sleeping on talent and quality once again. Troye Sivan // Bloom I honestly didn’t even think much of Bloom when it was first released. It was just ok, but I didn’t realize the brilliance in the song until two months ago. Ever since then it’s been one of the many songs I’ve been blasting. APRIL // Oh! my mistake The break down after the first chorus is definitely the weirdest thing I’ve heard musically this year and yet it’s still pleasing to the ear. That and the 80s production during the verses and chorus makes the song one of the best girl group songs this year. GWSN // Puzzle Moon I hope GWSN gains more traction next year because this debut was really impressive. With the chorus being an ode to f(x)’s 4 Walls and their great performance skills, it’s an automatic 10/10.
Tom Vercetti Posted December 26, 2018 Posted December 26, 2018 Alone and One Kiss are great. I also like Shining. Used No Drama at first but haven't played it in a while. Out of the other singles tho, I would go back to that one. lady, ntltc, no angel/focus
M A R C Posted December 26, 2018 Author Posted December 26, 2018 Ariana Grande // breathin’ When I first heard this it screamed single, so I’m happy Ariana made it a single. Too bad she gave it a boring video, the song deserved better. But Breathin never fails to give me chills especially after the guitar solo with the instrumental coming to a silence, and then she comes back in singing with an echo effect kicking back in the beat right after. WHEW. The Carters // APES**T Apes**t was really s**t when I first listened to it. Just like Troye Sivan’s Bloom it didn’t grow on me until months after when my local radio stations was blasting it nonstop, I had no choice but to bop. I’m still not in love with trap Beyonce but she snapped here. LOONA // favOrite Overall LOONA OT9 really didn’t match up to the quality of their previous unit releases, especially Odd Eye Circle’s. But they still made some points with favOrite, the trippy production and the rollercoaster-like feeling I get when I listen to it is similar to a Red Velvet b-side. I genuinely enjoyed it over the screeching mess of Hi High. Troye Sivan ft. Ariana Grande // Dance To This Troye has been on a role this year with the care free anthems. Adding Ariana was brilliant, I never knew I needed them harmonizing together. The entire vibe of the song was feel good and fun. The second half of the song really made it a staple. Nicki Minaj // Barbie Tingz The Queen era would’ve been somewhat decent if she added Barbie Tingz to the track list. The beat is sickening. Her flow on this reminds me of her Pink Friday/RR days, which I still believe are her best efforts. Yup him too, he will still wife me AHH HAA
