I think that Invasion of Privacy is a good album because it gives me those 2000s hip hop albums that had "something for everybody" in it.

That tizrah album... god, I wanted to like it but it was SO BORING.

Posted

Your disappointments are generally on point. Devotion was just kinda... eh? Like I saw some stanning for it and never got the fuss over it. I didn't hate MotW like everyone else (I thought the production was at least enjoyable to get through, see: Supplies  ) but it does feel very "been there, done that" and lyrically there were some poor moments. I never bothered with The 1975 so I'll skip over that. And IoP isn't a bad album. It does what it sets out to do. But that doesn't stop this from being an unnecessarily overhyped album. It's just an album with bangers on it. While that's fine and all, it's weird that people are glossing over the fact that she's... not a good rapper lol. Mediocre lyrics and a choppy flow, but she's charismatic and fun so people don't care :skull:

Also, poor Denzel. It seems everyone's been panning the hell out of Taboo :'(

since i reminded myself of it, might as well also mention snail mail who fits pretty squarely into the bland, useless, idea-starved category. actually, her acclaim is more bewildering than any of the others.

Devotion - Tirzah

yet another example of the trend of artists taking a meagre portion of texture and stretching it out across a whole song. this record is so idea-starved it frustrates me, i mean what is she trying to accomplish? yes, this is nice sounding but there is nothing to it, which is perfectly fine for a bedroom pop debut but it is has bizarrely received genuine acclaim. aren’t you supposed to wait for the artist to come out with their 2nd, their 3rd attempts, building on what they’ve achieved to eventually release something genuinely bracing? not sensual, not beautiful, just nice musica background.

Agree on IOP being super overrated.

Tirzah doesn't interest me at all, and someone compared her to Twigs. Not in this lifetime.

JT really dropped the ball. Only 2-3 good songs on that in total.

oh this is smexy

you're totally right on all of those. janelle's record is just rly tame for such a colorful artist, kacey was just alright to me, nothing to write home about, tizrah is all style no substance, 1975 was a mental challenge to sit through in its entirety and cardi is just about as unremarkable as it gets despite her obnoxious, loud persona. never cared enough to listen to jt album but filthy was... a unique sound choice

couldn't have put it better myself (not to mention that filthy sounds nothing like the rest of the album i don't know what he was doing with that dated dubby instrumental)

The worst thing about the 1975 is Matty's lyrics. They're so on the nose, inelegant, forced imo. Love it if we made it is sooo exhausting to listen to. What happened to nuance?

exactly. i usually dislike very direct lyrics in general unless they're just for contrast but in this case it's a no from me

alright, lemme do some songs. some points:

  • outside of the top 20 this is mostly arbitrary
  • i tried to mainly focus on artists not on my albums list so there might not be a huge correlation
  • one per artist
  • some of these songs are bad

220px-Lykke_Li_-_So_Sad_So_Sexy.png

100. Deep End / Hard Rain - Lykke Li

i’ve always been slightly cold on lykke li and her so her new trap-influenced slump was not really a major player for me. the leads though (putting in both single sides cause why not) were pretty good executions of what she was going for.

musica alternative r&b / art pop

a3009101780_10.jpg

99. Livin' Loose - George Clanton

fun, dreamy, and engaging chillwave with a great soundscape including a wonderful sax. the vocals are nicer than these kind of things can tend to be sometimes too.

musica chillwave / synthpop

a4234956256_10.jpg

98. Fever Dreams - Emma Ruth Rundle

hadn’t heard of her before this year, but her album was alright. this is my highlight, because it features the songwriting of similar indied singer-songwriters but augmented by the strength (like, physically) of the shoegaze influence.

musica dream pop / shoegaze

a1708157068_10.jpg

97. Breathe In, Breathe Out - Melody's Echo Chamber

very happy she’s back, this is a beautiful psych pop song that doesn’t skimp on the pop aspect, rather than devolving into useless neopsych dribble. it manages to fit a lot of interesting individual sections and transitions into its short length. can't seem to find a good picture of the single cover so album will have to do.

musica psychedelic pop / progressive pop

a0437707322_10.jpg

96. Fragments of a Lily - Puce Mary

a delightfully abrasive slice of (feminine sounding? at least imo) death industrial. what the we appreciate power instrumental should’ve sounded like.

musica death industrial

469bb24dc0e092bff3f3003c8229ecf3.1000x1000x1.jpg

95. Border Girl - Young Fathers

love the simple groove, the ‘send another miracle’ hook is great too and i appreciate the surprisingly decent lyrics about gender identity given the style.

musica alternative r&b / art pop

a1225303261_10.jpg

94. Little Death - The Beths

they ended paramore (and i love when the accent comes through)

musica indie rock / power pop

0960b874060fe9def5a8f74c65829b90.1000x1000x1.jpg

93. Finesse (Remix) [feat. Cardi B] - Bruno Mars

the original was already one of the best parts of his career and cardi b managed to make this one of the biggest bangers of the year because the 90s influence is just so in your face (yes i’m totally including the video in this rank)

musica new jack swing

Header_1807717_1.11%20(2)_0.jpg

92. Lake Zurich - Gorillaz

they’ve been on the downward spiral for a while now, but this is a perfectly serviceable disco jam.

musica synth funk / electro-disco

elza-soares-deus-e-mulher.jpg

91. Eu Quero Comer Você - Elza

i don’t speak portuguese but madonna certainly wasn’t making anything this good when she was 81. uptempo MPB-flavoured art rock might just be the best thing ever.

musica vanguarda paulista / art rock

Dunno Melody's Echo Chamber but she better stan Hilary Duff!

Some solid tracks here :clap3:

I think the positions for the majority of these songs are very accurate (deep end/hard rain, Livin' Loose, Finesse (Remix))

Though I haven't ranked Lake Zurich on my list, it's one of my favorite songs on the album. A bop of an instrumental :clap3: (and TNN was a big improvement on Humanz lbr :emofish:)
