comparin the industry now to back in 1997 when people had to buy a full disc just to hear a song, instead of maybe 5-10 years ago when piracy was rampant and sales were steadily declining

Duh!!! like the industry was ever going to go back to that. People can just get the music for free. Additionally, streaming is still brand new. Many people haven't converted yet. Eventually everyone will be paying in one way or another.

people should be cheering Drake current chart success. It’s quite amazing for the times. But those same people cheering need to acknowledge that the records he broke aren’t really comparable.

 

 

You should be comparing 0 dollars to 25000 dollars. 0 dollars is where the industry was headed until they found a new business model. Eventually all releases will happen through streaming services. Once everyone is paying $10 or $15 per month the industry will be making more money than they were before. the problem with pricing it so low though is that it requires massive scale to work.

To be fair the first 30 years of history was largely guess work and make believe. Soundscan wasn't a thing until the 90s. The chart history and records for that time period was always useless for the purposes of measuring true popularity at that time. However, it is useful for making some people money.
