Disease is giving me Houdini run :(

Maybe that late October - early November lead single release date is too risky

Not really. It doesn't look like Disease will make it through the Christmas freeze. Houdini was still going strong in the new year. In fact, it was still gaining spins in its 18th week in March:

6 6 DUA LIPA Houdini 11606 11393 213 33.146 (18)

Disease is dropping in Week 9.

Popstars should avoid releasing lead singles in Q4 going forward. Just don't bother.

Granted, Disease would've bombed at any point in the calendar year, but the timing definitely made it look even worse.

Yeah, the Q4 release didn't affect SZA and Taylor in 2022, and both had at least one follow-up hit (Midnights had 2, in Lavender Haze and Karma). Not to mention, IION and Houdini peaked in March, so the Q4 release/Christmas freeze didn't affect those hits either. Heck, Houdini even outlasted its follow-up hit, Training Season.

There's a reason there were tons of releases in the spring, the election and it's never ending news cycle take over.

But yeah its a flop no matter when.

That was an epic holiday season. Abel fed us Heartless/Blinding Lights and Doja with Say So.

True but I remember that we all thought Houdini would have better updates once the Christmas was over but... it just never did. I think there were some positive signs in January but it didn't really amount to anything. I would also argue that Dua is more of a radio darling than Gaga and any lead single from DL3 was guaranteed to last long on the radios after Future Nostalgia.

I was only comparing them both because they were solid 10/10 songs that were acclaimed and deserved and were expected to be huge hits but only ended up being moderate hits, possibly because they were released at a bad timing.

I think releasing in Q4 is a good strategy but a risky one. You either have to know your single will survive the freeze (Anti Hero) or you release in December (SZA singles) so that they are fresh once the Christmas is over and the field is empty.

Houdini was also a hit at Hot AC and AC.
